Through her kindness, leadership, support and guidance we have all gained a friend. Dr. Horsman has been at NASC since 1969 and presently holds a position in the English Department. It was largely through her efforts that the Public Relations track was organized within this department. Dr. Horsman has also recently been appointed English Careers Adviser, which involves assisting English majors in finding internships and post-graduate work. She has also endeavored to take on the position of adviser to our college yearbook, for which we are truly grateful. Surely, Dr. Horsman is dedicated to this school and to all of us who are graduating in 1983. We would like to take this time to thank her for ALL the help and perseverance she has displayed in our four years on this campus. 'QQ 136' , . Contents Foreward . . Individuals . I . . . Foreword North Adams State College, located in the heart of the Berkshire Mountains, was founded in 1894. Thirty-two women and three men made up the first student body and the campus consisted of only Murdock Hall and Smith House lthe presidential residencel. Since this time the college has gone through many changes and incredible growth. It wasn't until 1960 that the name of the college was changed from North Adams State Teachers College to its present name. It was also at this time that the curriculum was expanded to include other majors besides Education. The enrollment kept growing as well as the size of the campus and subsequent number of buildings. Because the growth of this college spanned so many years the architecture of each building is different. The different types of windows represented by each seems to reflect this difference in time. just as all these elements have been brought together to provide us with a rich and diversified education, we, as people, have come together for the purpose of learning. just as the windows of this school represent their own time and place, our eyes represent us as our windows to the world . We catch these moments when we can. Often, they occur between the lines of a book, in the walk between classes, or in the night before falling to sleep. This time is important. February 16, 1983 Dear Graduate: mbe 9 That is when you and I arrived 1979 was a great year, reme r. V at NASC, you as freshmen and I as president. we both had much to learn, problems to solve, friends to make and memories to store. Now you have reached a plateau in your lives from which you must ha e a ood begin again to plan the future. Hopefully, many of you v g idea of what your next step will be. Others of you are perhaps still as uncertain about some things as you were as freshmen. And that is not all bad either - if you realize your uncertainty and know how to deal with it. For what it is worth, I learned the hard way that the future is always to a large degree uncertain. It is the present in which you can grasp the reality of your strengths and weaknesses, that gives some measure of certainty. I hope that I have been able to make some contribution to your ' ' ' ' f nan success at NASC. Mrs. Haas and I have enjoyed the friendship o y of you and will always have a special fond ess for the class of '83. Keep growing, keep learning and keep up the good work! ' s' ' X .:f' In Memorium On Friday morning, March 25, 1983, Randy Warren was killed in a pedestrian accident while vacationing in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Call it fate or God's will if you so believe, but the unanswerable question will always remain - why? Randy was a senior here at NASC who was scheduled to graduate in May. He was a Business Administration major concentrating in the marketing. Like all young men of 22, Randy had high hopes and aspirations for his fu- ture life. He was a man with guts enough to take on a challenge and come out a winner. A man whose 'i hopes and dreams were realistic and so , s within grasp. A man who would have A obtained what he so desired had he not been suddenly taken away. E X, I V I, hu.. ' 'X , i Randy was an active person with a ' I ' ,l seemingly unlimited supply of energy. He loved most to ski, on both water and land, and his expertise was obvious. He was a go-getter who strove for perfection in everything he did. He was a friend to all who knew him. Never again will we be able to see the happy-go-lucky red head in physical presence, but he will live forever in our hearts and minds. His crazy laugh and his bad jokes are only memories now. But they are merely a speck of the endless memories that will never be forgotten by those of us who knew and loved him. Rest in peace good friend. Dr. Randall Hansis - WS Coordinator Arlo Guthrie inter Stud '83 l Each year in january, NASC offers special learning experiences through the Winter Study program. During this mini-semester students participated in many courses and other activities which revolved around these themes: New England, Modern Times and The 1960's. The themes were supplemented with speakers including Arlo Guthrie, who came to NASC to tell of his experiences as a protest singer in the sixties. Many students joined with the Oldcastle Theater Company to perform in Our Town, a play by Thornton Wilder while others in the Cabaret cast Let the Sunshine ln . The remains of the Neolithic Calendar Stonehenge in Salisbury, England was one famous attraction visited by students traveling abroad. Other courses offered excursions to well-known sites in New England. Winter Study was also a time to make the most of the snow with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter camping.
