WHAT'S IN IN '81? Jeff Cracraft shows off his I .od fashions above as Charlotte Claybrooke models the Preppy Look below. What are some of the things that happened in 1981? What did we do? How did we dress? Well, styles change with the people and we will look back on this in a few years and laugh. Alligators, foxes, and tigers seem to pop up on sweaters, shirts, jackets, even socks. The girls are into the preppy look with oxford shirts, plaid skirts, knee socks and penny loafers. But the vast majority of both boys and girls wear blue jeans from Levi, Gloria Vanderbilt or Jordache. The popular places around to eat and see friends are Bisetti's on the week-end and McDonald's. WEBN and Q102 blasted from almost every radio playing the latest from DEVO, REO Speedwagon, and Air Supply. Disco is fading and Rock is back. When your kids grab onto this yearbook and read this page, they'll laugh whole-heartedly when mom is wearing a mini-shirt and a pixie hairdo, or when dad has his high waters on and greased back hair. This is 1981. 15

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON In 1972, the writer of the song, Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree , never dreamed that his song about a man returning home from a long absence would be the basis for the reuniting of a country. Almost over- night a country with thousands of beliefs was united for a common cause. The yellow ribbon to every American was a tribute to the fifty-two American Hostages held captive by Iranian Militants for 444 days, (Nov. 4 1979-Jan. 20, 1981). The ribbons, which decorated the country's vast lands was a reminder to the hostages that said, We as Americans have not forgotten you or your struggles as hostages and whatever the cost may be, we will never desert you . When the hostages arrived home, they were greeted by a countryside strewn with yards of yellow ribbon. After seeing this and realizing that all of America had suffered with them, one American hostage remarked, Wr will forever have a love affair with our country . The ordeal was marked by one sad event in April—the failure of a rescue mission, in which eight U.S. service- men were killed. To these bold, bold men a yellow ribbon, symbolizing the promise that their country will neve, forget them or their valiant efforts. 16
