September 5-11 1 i i!i V In the beginning there is ' ' Orientation Week, ' ' All new freshmen , as well as all who have attended college , know what it is, or do they? It ' s a week of many different feelings, experiences, and behavior. There are tests to be taken, people to meet, things to leam, and many wonderful sights to be seen. Leaving home and becoming an adult is a scary feeling that clouds the yoimg mind of a freshmian at the beginning of the new period of his life . Making new friends and leaving old ones also has a bearing on his mind. Is this beginning good or bad? Should this young person have to face a week of trials to be able to make it in the big new period of his life ? From this week of work and play called Orientation Week, which part is the most important? The taking of tests is very awakening , The tests will let the ' ' big man ' ' know where to place one , not in a class that will be too hard or too easy but in one that will do the most good . Another responsibility of Orientation Week is to fulfill the need of social activities. The group of students that MC now calls the largest freshmen class is the beginning of a new breed. The beginning of the 1960 ' s which produced a new kind of American that leaves the others in awe . These new Americans needed the social activities as much as the staff needed their tests. With the balance of academics and social ' ' tests, ' ' one could conclude that the combination of both helps to make Orientation Week a success . The student becomes aware of the things he has always heard of. The academic tests help the instructors to place him in a class that would help him . The social tests enables him to make new friends as well as see new lights. Therefore, at the end of the beginning, we have a college freshman eager to get going. — Andre ' Avery —

Off With His Head, Said The Queen Augiast 27 , and the endless summer is sailing its final days. The season ' s head slowly begins to fade as it blends with the musty warm days of a fresh autumn. The seniors of last spring ' s commencement are gone , and the wise ones know they will never return. Their allotted time has come to pass , and regardless of their struggle time steadily plods ahead . The noonday sun has begun to sink . , . etc . , etc . Amidst such pessimistic garble is the beginning of a new fall . Garble ? A convenient word to explain the disorder of life . Effective in describing situations one simply does not understand. ' ' Garble, ' ' by the way, was taught to me by an ex- senior. (Proof that learning does occur in lower forms of life , ) Fall . What an odd time for a beginning ■ Yet , it is only sensible as the seniors leave in spring . ' ' Whoa, ' ' said the prophet, • ' 1 tMnk there ' s a lesson here . ' ' Let me try to explain without too much garble . In perspective , all things have their time . A Biblical lesson, difficult if not impossible to grasp and follow. The incoming freshmen are relinquishing 18 years of another life , and have signed up for a ride they will never forget . It is appropriate tiiey begin in the fall , as they are also concluding another phase of their life simultaneously . The seniors , on the other hand , begin life anew when they leave this institution. They belong ht r in the spring , their minds are forging ahead beyond ivory towers . Obviously, both are going through difficult times, leading two lives at once . In between those glorious years are juniors and sophomores. Simple years of insanity. I warn you, don ' t dwell too long on this topic. It is depressing when one realizes that this has been going on here for 159 years. Maryville College might say you ' re merely a number . , . nothing else . Look at the sidewalks beneath your feet; the class of 1902, the class of ' 04, of ' 10 , ... they speak for themselves . And so the new year is upon us . New faces , new joys and sorro vs , and the same old headaches . When it concludes, forever finis, only memories will remain, Freshmen will be sophomores , sophomores will be juniors , juniors will be seniors and seniors will give their ultimate valediction to youth . Many faculty will disappear and the administration will only come with ; change . . . The lesson here is obvious , painfully simple . It is either good or bad . One either accepts or rejects the painted pictu re of reality which clotiies our existence . Your choice determines your destiny. Your fate is already known. Garble you say? Of course it is. Isn ' t it: Listen to my story, though, I haven ' t told it all. Unto my heart an air tfiat kills From yon far country blows , What are those blue rememibered hills , What spires , what farms are those ? That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain. The happy highways where 1 went And cannot come again . A.E. Houseman Bob Bishop, ECHO, September 21, 1978.
