“I i?. Frank jD. Mo CI el land If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. Kahlil Gibran Hear these announcements, please. It is eight a.m. in the Maryville College Chapel. The vigorous ex-Marine major mounts the platform and begins reading from hastily scrawled notices handed to him moments before, interpreting by means of his own rare inflections, pronouncing the names of Spanish musicians in his individualized Spanish ac- cent, and ad libbing when he finds the impulse irrepressible. The leader of the service this morn- ing, he announces matter-of-factly as the President plunges through the side door, is the late Joseph J. Copeland. From the audience comes spontane- ous applause or a side remark like Man, he ' s cool. He is indeed cool, but to the Maryville College student body he is much more. Because of his years as a student here before entering the Marine Corps during World War I, he represents to us an alum- nus who in his integrity, loyalty, faith, and service, typifies the best in the Maryville tradition. At the same time, because of his thirty years of leadership as dean (interrupted by service in World War II), we like to think of him as a symbol of the continu- ing progress and change of which we are proud — progress seen this year in the organization of the American Studies Seminar and the plans for exten- sive innovations in calendar and curriculum. From his office in Anderson Hall where he claims to do little except look at books, papers, and peo- ple, he looks deeply into the heart of an institution, quietly advising and, if necessary, firmly denying, but always concerning himself sincerely with the problems of the entire faculty and student body. While working what seems to be at least a thirty- hour day, he still finds time for active participation in the Church, in the Home Avenue Mission, in civic clubs, in Boy Scouts, in the various education asso- ciations — and in faculty skits for Barnwarming. Although he has received many honors during his lifetime, including a citation for gallantry in action during World War I, we feel it fitting to add one more, which might also be called a citation for gal- lantry in action — this time on the academic front. To Dr. Frank D. McClelland, whose wisdom has guided us, whose faith has given us courage, and whose sincerity has made us believe in him — and in ourselves, we dedicate the 1967 CHILHOWEAN. A man with a vision Meanwhile, back at the barn?
