CHILHOWEAN 1965 PUBLISHED BY THE JUNIOR CLASS MARYVILLE COLLEGE . MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE MAY WE PRESENT . . . THE GREAT SCOT Some say you ' ll find him in Anderson tower, or perhaps burrowing under the streets on his way from Carnegie to Baldwin. Others claim he ' s in classrooms, the executive coun- cil, the chaplain ' s office. Still others claim to know him among the widespread alumni of Maryville College. He ' s the shyness of Mr. Layman, the orange and garnet tie of Dr. Copeland, the wry humor of Dean McClelland. When you want to define him, he ' s never around; when you despair, he might be there; when there ' s a festive, carefree mood abroad, he ' s always there. Everywhere, yet nowhere — that ' s the Great Scot. Enough. The Great Scot can ' t suddenly appear on this page. Look at that artist ' s conception of him — no spirit of a college could look like that! Or could he? Follow him through the past year; look for him. Above all, draw your own conclusions. Oh, yes — watch out for the Great Scot! Junior Class Officers Diligent and studious — that is, as we see it .... A class picnic, dances, a yearbook, pep rallies — but more important were majors, beginning special studies, core requirements, extra hours. The well- trodden ways of juniors — running from the library to the dining hall — have carried the Class of 1966 from sunny September through blue January to welcome June, with welcome enthusiasm. 48 J uniors First Row: NANCY L. A memorial service on Honaker Field by a new president in honor of an old coach . . . The Honaker Club. Dr. Lea Callaway . . . died December, 1964. (A Carson-Newman graduate, enrolling his daughter at Maryville, asked if the spirit was the same as when he played football against Lea Callaway.) . . . Baseball, tennis, wrestling, track . . . debate, yearbook, honor society. Respected surgeon, Mayor of Maryville for eight years, member of the Board of Directors of Maryville College. A singer in his own right, he held much devotion for the choir; a creator of characters on the stage, he could play nearly any role; a psychology major, he de- lighted in his class of retarded children. Hail the queen of all the highlands, Loud her praises sing! Another year is past ... the Great Scot was here — but don ' t expect to find him again the same as he ' s been know before . . . and don ' t expect next year ' s students and faculty to recognize your Great Scot.
