PROPOSiED FINE ARTS CENTER Prominent among the proposed new buildings will be the new Fine Arts Center which will probably consist of a group ol buildings situated in the large open area across the roads from the Chapel and Baldwin Hall. The funds for this Center are being provided by Mr. and Mrs. Glen Alfred Lloyd of Chicago in memory of their daughter, Ann Baldwin Lloyd, who died March 27, 1947. Mr. Lloyd, who is the brother of President Lloyd, grad- uated from Maryville in 1918. Mrs. Lloyd is a graduate ol Vas- sar College. On the site between the tennis court below the President ' s home and the trailer camp will be built the New Women ' s Dormitory. NEW buildings; The New Science Building will be located behind the Fayerweather Hall and both science buildings will double the college ' s science facilities. A comparatively new Tradition on Mary- ville campus, the Girl of the Year is being presented for the third consecutive year. J The Rev. Dr. Clifford Barbour, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Knox- ville, was the leader of the seventy-second series of the February Meetings on Mary- ville campus. Due to the loss of Voorhees Chapel, the morning meetings were held in the Alumni Gymnasium and the evening meetings were held in New Providence Presbyterian Church. Using as his topic the important problems of everyday life, Dr. Barbour gave all those who heard him a great deal of the wisdoms and truths of Christianity. A dynamic speaker, a fascinat- THE FEBRrARY MEETINGS ing personality, and his true Christian char- acter quickly won and held his listeners. Returning for the twenty-sixth year, the Rev. Dr. Sidney E. Stringham of the New McKendree Methodist Church, Jackson, Mis- souri, again led the congregation in the music that is such an important part of the February meetings. His obvious love and knowledge of music helped give the Febru- ary meetings that emphasis and meaning that will not be forgotten soon. 25 a.:- By their wisdom ye shall know them . . . HENRY Director of Student Help Well known in Christian circles throughout the nation, Dr. Ralph Waldo Lloyd has played perhaps the most important part in the successful future of Maryville College. The responsibility of the building campaign takes Dr. Lloyd away from the campus on long trips frequently, yet his is still the role of the active, vitally interested president. Graduating from Maryville College in 1915, he re- ceived his Bachelor of Divinity from McCormick Semi- nary in 1924, his Doctor of Divinity from Maryville in 1929 and the Honorary Ll.D. from Centre College in 1940. Mulholland Townsend Willingham Kruger Two of the most recent organizations at Maryville in the past three years are the All Girls ' Choir organized in 1945 and the Men ' s Glee Club re-organized in 1946. Both are under the direction of Professor Curtis Hughes. The activities of these organizations ex- tend through-out the college year and offer much satisfaction and pleasure to large audi- ences. The All Girl Choir renders each season various programs at Chapel, Vespers, and churches. They have participated in the City Choir Festival and Handel ' s Messiah . The combined groups gave a concert version of an operetta. That ' s the name the 1947 Highlanders made for themselves by con- secutively defeating two previously unde- feated teams and bringing their season to a terrific climax for a 7-7 tie with Carson- Newman. For a second year the Scottie eleven kept a clear record of not having lost a game, and bounced every opponent that huddled on Wilson Field. Defeat came only once, in the ' 47 season when Coach Honaker was absent from the bench due to illness for his first football game in his 26 years as the High- landers coach. As a football season, the year 1947 was a gridiron mastery for the lads of Lombe who were heralded as true Tennessee Giant Killers. After the customary downing of little Hiwessee, and the set-back at Cookeville, the Highlanders pounded Centre in the second away game of the season. On Wilson Field the highly touted East Ten- nessee Teachers failed to show the Scots an active struggle. Competition went up when Emory and Henry ' s vaunted Wasps came in — then the Giants. The Scots dealt Sewanee the Purple and White ' s worst defeat in 35 yeais in a game which the Tigers had entered unscored upon and without an opponent having crossed their 35-yard line. Next, Middle Tennessee ' s Blue Raiders presented the only undefeated and untied eleven in the state — before meeting Maryville ' s Giant Killers. Then Carson-Newman loomed as the only undefeated team left in the South as they came to visit the Highland Clan. Star lettermen who ended their football careers on the Scottie eleven this year included Lloyd Anderson, a gifted grappler at guard; Ronald Cotton Easter, a guard who captained the ' 47 squad; Robert Pie Garner, winner of Little All American recognition at center; Ken Talbott, alter- nate captain and veteran of four years, at end; and Frank Still, who lettered at center in ' 42 and at end in ' 46 and ' 47. BASKETBALL — Already past the half-way mark for the current cage season, at this writing the Highland Hoopmen had eight wins and five reverses for the record. Starting their hardwood campaign with five regulars held over from the ' 47 team, the Scottie Cagers waged a heavy schedule with strong hoop opponents. Seven tilts remained on the slate at this writing, and the Scots were yet to go into action against Lincoln Memorial, Carson-Newman, and Tennessee Wesleyan in the remaining cage contests. TRACK — Despite a shift in their training program two weeks before the first meet caused by the resignation of Track Coach Walter J. Mehl, the Scot thin-clads came from behind a 99i 2-to-31 1 2 defeat at U-T, to take eight out of four- teen events for a 75-to-53 victory over Tennessee Tech, Hap Brahams was the sensation of Maryville ' s track sea- son. Hap, in addition to copping four first places in hurdle events with U-T and T.P.I., went to the state collegiate tour- nament at Memphis where he took first place in the 220 lows and a close second (after nearly tripping up) in the 120 high hurdles. BASEBALL — With a record of l5 victories out of 20 games, the Scottie Ball Club set a long stride in rejuvenating the game on the hill for their first regular season since 1942. The Scots displayed a strong hitting and pitching force, all-around good field w ork, and promise of continued high standing in baseball for Maryville, since none of the var- sity nine are seniors. WRESTLING — Maryville ' s wrestlers began their 1948 sea- son with four lettermen: Captain Ken Ross, Henry Tubby Callaway, Herschel Merriman and John Briggs, returning to the mat. Earl Black, J. A. Cameron, and Herbert Palmer were promising newcomers to the Orange and Garnet squad. At this writing, the Scot matmen had six matches to go, with Appalachian State, Western North Carolina, and Au- burn yet to test the Scots ' strength. INTRAMURALS— The arrival of Kenneth P. Johnson as in- tramural director was the Go signal for the men ' s intra- mural sports program for the year 1947-48. A tennis ladder, a series of swimming meets, an intra- mural track meet, men ' s soccer, volley ball, basketball, and touch football were included in the sports program for the fall semester. Intramural touch football, after ten weeks of play, came to a boil in a heated clash between K.M.A. and the Eight Balls for the championship game. The Garnet All Stars smashed the Orange All Stars, 12-0. The holidays cut the volley ball and basketball seasons into the halves of five weeks play. As the second five weeks came to a close, the basketball scene was domi- nated by four strong squads — Eight Balls, Vikings, Dingoes, and the Rebels. The Vikings and the Eight Balls held the lead a week before the tournament. Tumbling was a new addition to the intramural program early in January. Softball remained the other major intramural sport for the spring intramural agenda. 144 ii M ??
