Besides marching for miles in the rain, the band visited all the shrines of American liber- ty, such as the Libert Bell and Constitution Hall. The were only one of two banci from Arizona asked to perform at the Bicentennial. Although the rain dampened their spirits, finding a dry cleaner open to mop up on the uniforms was even more difficult. While they were there, the band was also asked to per- form at the Kennedy center for the Performing Arts in Washington which led to another round of sightseeing. Accompanying the band were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Connol- ly, Mr. and Mrs. David Good- son, and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Watson. Although most were spon- sored by student government to offer recreation to the stu- dents, many were sponsored by other clubs to raise money or other worthwhile purposes. One of the most popular activities was the pie throw sponsored by the Black Stu- dent Union. At this event, students could, for a price, fling pies at various function- aries around campus, mainly Mr. Kindall, and Mr. Shackle- ford. At other times, rock bands and the Maryvale musicians played concerts. These were quite well-received. .t f-,,,, Sock hoppers hustle, bump as disco sounds resound As live bands priced them- selves out of the market, dis- cos became the favorite form of dances. Instead of the sounds of locals, students were able to dance to favorite records as the after game sock hops drew huge crowds into the gym. The Lunior class started the fad as t ey sponsored the first disco sock hop after the Glen- dale football game. Deanne johnson and Brian Cutting were crowned at the biggest dance of all: The Cir s' League Formal, Decem- ber 11. The formal carried the theme Feelings of Love, and featured a live band: Situa- tion, a local rock group. Camelot, as well as Tom Saw- yer, served the purpose when singing and dancing were needed. Appreciative audiences cheered highlights of all pro- ductions, but particularly the cave scene in Tom Sawyer. The scene showed what could be done by set designers. The costumers and make-up crews were especially effec- tive in Camelot. Open House draws parents as chili supper adds spice Students' home away from home was again visited by their parents on the annual Open House, November 15. To add spice to the evening this year, the festivities began with a chilli supper for the hungry, at 5 p.m. Besides the traditional visit with junior's teachers to find out how the little rascal was doing, the parents were enter- tained by performing arts and ROTC groups. This year parents were also taken on tours of the new buildings and facilities that had been added since the last open house. Last on the program was serving of refreshments to all the visitors and teachers. This was done in the cafeteria where everyone could visit. Teachers, as usual, took Open House in stride. Some, like Mr. Earl Stinson, CUpper Leftb watched the Monday night football game. Others, like Mrs. Berneil Drake, tLower Left! E Panthers start season ranked first in Arizona Before the Panthers marched onto the field for the first game, they were rated seven- teenth in the nation by joe Namath's National Prep Sports magazine and first in the state by both the Arizona Republic and Arizona Prep Magazine. Also cited were two three letter men: jack Housley and Ken Davis as best in Arizona. Only one of these predictions came true. Housley was the only player named to both the offensive and defensive All-State teams. He was also named captain of that team as well as Player of the Year by the Republic. Dick Harkins was awarded the Thom McAn award for student athlete of the year. Except for one game, the Panthers might have lived up to their pre-season prom- ise. The South Mountain Rebels took the measure of the Panthers, 9-0, dropped them from the ranks of the unbeaten and rudely awak- ened them from their dream of a state championship. Except in the South game, Panther power was tested in only three games: Camelback, Moon Valley, and Central. The Panthers routed five teams on their way to an 8-1 season. Glendale fell first, 55-0, as the offense tallied the first four times it had the ball and eight different Panthers had a hand in the scoring. Camelback proved tough in the mud and rain that caught up with Phoenix football this year. Maryvale used a two- point conversion to go ahead in the third quarter, 20-19, then scored again in the fourth quarter to down the stubborn Spartans 27-19. Three breathers followed as the Panther steamroller crushed Carl Hayden, 47-7 Trevor Browne, 35-7, and Al- hambra, 30-12. The Trevor Browne game retired the Browne-Maryvale travelling trophy as the Panthers beat the Bruins for the third straight time. Wet weather was a factor in the Moon Valley VARSIW FOOTBALL TEAM: lUpper Right? Along with many other groups, student government spent much time waiting for t eir new quarters from which to govern. They finally moved into the remodeled security room on the south side of the library. Another change saw Dorann Thoreen replace Richard Kemper as sponsor. The biggest change as far as student life was concerned was the institution of the new constitution which replaced student senate with the asso- ciated student council. Panthorian staff recruits females for cheerleaders The yearbook staff, following the precedent set last ear, was dominated by peoplle of the male persuasion. lt suf- fered from many of the same Eroblems listed in last year's ook, but the dominance was so gjreat this year that a new pro lem arose: the lack of feminine companionship dur- ing those long, cold, deadline nights. This problem, as all others, was brainstormed by the staff. Most of the ideas were too obscene to print. Few of the others were practical. , -c . A Finally, it was decided that since the Panthorian staff is much like an athletic team, they should recruit a team of cheerleaders to urge them on to meet their goals. And that is why students leav- ing the basketball game on the night of january 28 heard the following emanating from the publications room: Write that headline! Siss! Boom! Bah! Meet that deadline! Rah! Rah! Rah! Photographers have to be watched or they suffer from darkroom lag. Symptoms of this rare disease are exhibited by Tim Silbaugh lFar Up- per Left! and Troy Williams tUpper Leftl. Unfortunately, newspaper production was done during fourth hour and staffers took advantage of the snackbar rather than write stories. Called Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow the column used Mesabic irony, hot cross puns, and awful alliteration to make Muhammed mountains into anthills. Among the weighty problems the column reduced to ashes were Panther football, new educational programs, con- struction Cor the lack of ith, Mr. Salt, Thespians, Welcome Back Kotter, security, fresh- man orientation, Poms, Cheers, student government, and Panther Tracks. Of course, the newspaper contained other material, some of it news, but that was soon forgotten. Whimsy lives on. U iXlLf.Q'ifi5NN B ,A B .- g . 3- r 1 O f 11 sf-ltr.. . N A ' PM .:. x 1 's -Q M - .. For you. - .sci ffl gfuqvj .. tn:-Q' I s- ...I Building delays harass administration When Maryvale opened, more or less, this year, the administration faced an al- most impossible task. Con- struction which was to have been completed by Septem- ber 1 dragged on, but school for 3200 students could not wait. Principal David Goodson and Associate Principal George Miller were equal to the chal- lenge, however, as they un- flappably utilized every teacher and every classroom to maximum capacity. The problems they faced daily were best described by Ron Dickson in the first issue of Panther Tracks. Ron wrote about a freshman who lost his books when I just laid them down to eat lunch and while I was gone someone put a building on the spot. Despite these problems, life at Maryvale went on, some of it nearly normal. The fact that it went on at all was largely due to the efforts of Mr. Goodson and Mr. Miller. In his spare time, when he has it, Mr. Goodson plays amateur hockey in a league. Mr. Miller likes to hunt and fish. He is also Maryvale's resident ex- pert in Arizona history and geography. 5.1 00. The expansion program that was to afford more space for the 3200 student body was still expanding. For a while stu- dents had a hard time telling construction workers from teachers. When it was all finished, how- ever, the new classroom area, called the 900 building, ab- sorbed learners from three other buildings: math from 200, reading from 300 and art from 700. The building also served as a site for the state- mandated programs for ex- ceptional students. Building 300 changed little by remodeling Only the 300 building came through the remodeling prac- tically unscathed by the re- modelers. It suffered only slight revision to accommo- date business classes in the former reading area. The Eng- lish and foreign languages de- partments stayed to fill up the rest of the space. The science and social studies departments got some added space with the departure of math but they had to share the 200 building with a larger bookstore which moved from the 100 building in order to make way for offices for other school services. Health classes moved in from the temporary buildings' no-man's land. Industrial arts, as usual, stayed pretty much the same. The 400 building was enlarged to house an expanded library, or officially the Instructional Materials Center KIMCJ, and to give audio-visual and pub- lications a chance to play musical rooms. Also added were the Americana and Humanities rooms for social studies and English classes to use when they visit the library as a group. A TV studio, better known as the Bionic Classroom, was added to the southwest corner. Ostraat heads new programg aids exceptional All the facilities were some- thing new and wonderful and late. Students and teachers at Maryvale once again showed their adaptability as they ducked beams, ladders and newly-installed light fixtures on their way to and from classes for several weeks. Once the new facilities were in place and permanent, there was not that much new about the curriculum. The newest were the courses offered in the exceptional students program. Under the guidance of former counselor, Lois Ostraat, the department was designed to help all students who, it was thought, could function bet- ter outside a traditional class- room. 7' f f fl fc 1 . ,gf A X 4 17 r 'QXA LL IZJ vw 'A Q, gn, iwmggrzl . Yet, there is a group of persons no less important to a well-run in- stitution. They are the secre- taries and clerks who help the administrators and teachers, keep the records of students and decorate the buildings just with their presence. They are the security people who protect the students and teachers and keep the build- ings from harm. They are the custodians who keep the buildings clean and fix the little things that do go wrong so that students and teachers can make the most out of their environment. E53 Since 3,200 people couldn't be on staff to make this yearbook, it was done by a handful of people who put in much of their time fmany days before and after school, Friday nights, Sat- urdays, and almost all holidays? and effort. Special thanks are due from the entire population of MHS to: Mr. Earl Stinson for his time, patience, support, ideas, and extra food money. My staff lincluding Heidi Chesser and Lynn Rikasl for obvious reasons. All of the families involved for their understanding while l borrowed a person or two on those long, long deadline nights and days. I wish to personally thank everyone, especially Patsy Brubeck, for their support during this book's production, and my parents for not moving until I finished school here at Maryvale.
