Senior court 7 Wally says, We re Alligator Tough” ' was the theme for the Junior class float. The Juniors really gave it all they had and placed second in the 1972 Homecoming float competition. Homecoming festivities began with the annual homecoming parade. Students filled the s treets to watch the colorful scenery of the class floats. Music filled the air as the M.H.S. band played and led both floats and students over to the stadium for a pep assembly. All students showed an amazing amount of spirit, for they knew that in just a few hours at half time, the Marysville High School Queen of 1972-73 would be crowned and the winners of the float competition would be announced. At half time, music filled the air once more as the ever-faithful M.H.S. band played and formed a lovely “rose garden” in which the Homecoming Queen would be crowned. And she was — lovely Sandy Richards! Queen Sandy and the members of her court reigned over the homecoming dance, “In The Still Of The Night.” Queen Sandy and her escort Dave Porter, danced to the Queen’s dance while her court joined in. Music was provided by the band “Head F irst.” The Student Council was responsible for the planning and organization of the best Homecoming ever! “We Won’t Be Dragon, Cuz We’re All Fired Up,” was the theme chosen by the Senior class, which influenced the judges to award the first-place prize of $25 to the Seniors. The Homecoming dance wouldn’t have been complete without the rock-and-roll music from the band called “Head First.” 8 Lovely Sue Baldwin and her escort Dale Stump. Although the Freshmen failed to place in the float competition, their float “Roll on to a Victory! ” showed great spirit and ingenuity. The float was constructed at Lori Knox’s home. In the Still of the Night The sophomore float, which was assembled at Theresa Gardner’s home placed third, with the theme of “Vikings Say, ‘We’ll Beat ’em, Good and Plenty’!’’ 9 People With... Bob Donaldson, Vice-President, and Tim Collard, President, showed leadership ability by directing the Student Council in their Junior year. Governing Ideals The 1972-73 Student Council started the year out sponsoring the 52nd annual homecoming. Vicki Peruski and Cathy Miller, co-chairmen for the event, planned a spirited week for the Vikings. Free refreshments were served, courtesy of the Council, after the Viking March and bonfire preceding Homecoming night. “In the Still of the Night” was the chosen theme for the dance which closed Homecoming “72”. Gardens School hosted this year’s Christmas Dance. A successful turnout came to hear the “Fat Cole Band.” The officers went to Area League meetings where they met with other school councils and exchanged different projects the Councils were undertaking. The Money-Making Committee sold popcorn during Varsity Football and Basketball games which added a little butter to the games. Plastic coated I.D. cards were distributed throughout the student body for the purpose of student identification at local affairs. The 1972-73 Student Council mastered a prosperous year for both the students and administration. Some of the duties of the library students are checking books in and out, putting up newspapers and new magazines, and filing the back issues. Not only do they do all of these jobs, but many more, such as putting returned books on shelves, counting and recording daily circulation of the books and taking care of overdue lists. Each student has a particular section of the library which is her responsibility. In each section the books ar e to be straightened and the shelves cleaned. Each new book must have a pocket, and cards for the paperbacks have to be typed. The student must be able to file cards in the card catalog alphabetically. The girls are graded on how well they do the above and on the worksheets and tests assigned. Cindy No r dstrom completes library passes. Library Service Fulfills Student Needs READ A BOOK By Lori Wilson Grade 4 When I’m going on a trip, With nothing else to do, I simply go and read a book, I read the whole night through. The four senior starters - Mark Turnbull, Captain; Rick Kern, Dave French, and Dave Prevost - played important roles in the execution of a fine season. Dave French, Class B All-Area Honorable Mention, and Dave Prevost, Class B All-Area Second Team and Blue Water Area All-Star Team Honorable Mention, were top rebounders for the Vikings. Rick Kern was at his best-rebounding, scoring, and in all-around participation. Mark Turnbull, selected for the Detroit FREE PRESS All-State Fifth Team, WE LOVE THE VIKING MACHINE! Blue Water Area All-Star Team, and Class B All-Area First Team, was our most excellent player this year, averaging 16.1 points per game. Our team also had an extremely strong bench this season. Gary Jones, Tim Collard, Tom DeNardin, and Dan Stump were among the top outstanding substitute players. Seniors Mark McHenry and Greg White also contributed much to the outcome of many games. Rich Pietroski was also out of action for part of the season but came back to a fine finish. Above all, a great coach is needed for a great team. Coach McDevitt was superb this year! While he was ill, Coach Braun stepped in to continue our victorious ways. In the first two games of district play, Marysville pressed out both Marine City 53-38 and Cros-Lex 54 . 4 O, going on to win the District Championship by defeating St. Clair. In the first game of regional basketball, the Vikings played an astounding game against Royal Oak Shrine, squeaking out a 53-52 victory. Along with their principal duty of timing at all the home swim meets, they painted posters and distributed flyers promoting the team. Pushing their record to 12-3, the Viking Swimmers introduced more enthusiasm and spirit this season than in former years. Sponsoring a Swim-a-Thon to purchase lane markers, the team raised seven hundred dollars. Steve Endean was the Marathon Swimmer who completed the most in two hours. FRANK YON, CHIEF ADVISOR During the four years the Class of 1973 have attended Marysville High School, their advisors have been a tremendous help in organizing and supporting many accomplishments. In 1969, the Freshman float was awarded fourth place in the annual Homecoming Float Contest. That year, Terri Pavlov represented her class. The Sophomore class float was awarded third place and their class representative was Melanie French. In 1970, the Class of ' 73 helped other students from MHS capture the world record of packing thirty-seven students in one VW. They also won first place in the Viking Week Field Events. MISS JANET ARNO 110 MRS. JANET ELSHOLZ MR. L.E. ELSHOLZ The class was represented by Dondra Fitz, Debbie Redpath, and Sandy Richards. (The queen was chosen among these three girls, and she was Sandy Richards.) The Senior float took first place again as the class provided the planning and construction of their float. In 1971, the Junior float captured first place. “Whale of a Victory” was the theme of the float. In January of 1972, the Junior Prom was held at the Gardens Elementary School. The prom theme was “Midwinter Night’s Dream.” After the prom, Mr. Puskarich again stepped into the scene and dismantled the props with nothing more than a screwdriver. All in all, everyone had a wonderful experience. Mr. Puskarich, fondly known as Mr. P., provided many an incentive for entertainment. The class, as juniors, grateful for his time and energy, presented him with a plaque. The class representative for the Junior Homecoming was Diane Weymouth. In early spring of 1973, the advisors began the planning of the Senior Prom. They’ve also helped plan numerous dances after basketball and football games. The advisors have guided the Senior class in all their functions and accomplishments. MR. JAMES PUSKARICH MR. DAVID HOUCK MR. She should be recognized for all the time and effort she has contributed to our class. Mrs. McCall has given us the guidance and leadership ability that it takes to build class floats, to work as committees, and most of all, to produce a spectacular Junior Prom.
