Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1966 volume:

THE STAFF PRESENTS Carolyn Gragowski THE 19 66 VIKING WE SALUTE MR. NEIL COLLARD for his endless contributions to MHS yearbooks. This was Mr. Collard’s last year as Advisor to the yearbook staff. Not only this year’s staff, but the past staffs who also work- ed under Mr. Collard’s direction, know what a rewarding exper- ience it is to work with such a wonderful person. We extend to him our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude. AND MISS MARY TENPAS for the fine job she has done directing our school plays. Miss TenPas came to us two years ago and since then, she has kept busy directing plays, super- vising debate and forensics ac- tivities, as well as teaching Latin and Speech. She is leaving the hallowed halls of MHS to become a Mrs. Our Thanks and Best Wishes go with her. She has one brother, Erik, 34. She is spending her year in America with Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Carrier and Linda, senior ’66, her American Sister. Elsa’s future plans include two years of Junior College and four years of Journalistic Training. Elsa had this to say about America: “America is the best place on earth for Americans, and you have almost made me one.” Geertruida (Truus) Brouwer, from Amsterdam, Holland, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willem Brouwer. She has one brother, Wim, 22, and one sister Mieke, 6. Her Ameri- can parents are Mr. and Mrs. Norbert L. Gragowski and her American sisters are Janet and Carolyn. Truus’s future plans include a study of medicine for which she will go to the University of Amsterdam. The comment that Truus leaves us is: “I’m glad I had the opportunity to come to the States. I really feel at home here and I hope that Marysville High will have exchange students next year because living in another country is the best way to understand the people of that country.” 4 UNDERCLASSMEN The main strength of any Viking ship is its oars- men, and so the underclassmen are the main strength of MHS. The oarsman’s life is a mixture of work and play. The oar often pulls hard, the seas are some- times rough, but with undaunted determination the oarsman toils on, secure in the knowledge that his efforts shall be rewarded in a fuller, richer life. 5 Freshmen Debby Phil Vincent Robert Alexander Anglebrandt Artman Ashpole Austin Neil Rinda William Baldwin Balhoff Bal inski Debbie Basset John Joanne Alice Bellow Bier Billet Linda Brockdorff Lynn Charbonneau Kerry Bromley Louise Campbell Arthur Cole Bill Carpenter Joe Confer David Cataldo Linda Crago CLASS OFFICERS: Dee McNichol , Secretary; Jim Partridge, President; Carol McDonald, Vice-president; Nancy Hool, Treasurer Nancy Cruickshank Linda Curtis 9 i Peggy Durrant Pat Eagen Joe Blake Ernst Evans Michele Fox John Frendt Margaret Gaffney Richard Gallagher Harkleroad Johnson Sandra Heim i mm Rob Helzer Sherry Johnson Elaine Jones Belinda Jacobs Kathy Jones 7 Bruce Jordan Raymond Joslyn John Knuth Dave Kulman Robert Beverly LaGruth Landshoot V i Sandra Langolf La Verne La point Dina Leighton Janet Lewis l. £ A Laura Marsden Patricia Massacar Steve Matthews Carol McDonald Linda McIntyre Dee McNichol Kathleen Dennis Morris Neal Linda Neal Gloria O ' Neill Ann Osentoski Becky Parker Richard Parker 8 Brenda Partain James Partridge % j £ 4 yJU Dennis Pelton David Perry Mark Rae Peters Pietroski Caroline Priess STEERING COMMITTEE: Back row: Dan Starkey, Joe Ernst, Beverly Landshoot, Rod Armstrong, Debbie Wilson, Jim Partridge, Bob LaGruth, Front row: Sandy Gaudette, Carol McDonald, Peggy Schaefer, Lynn Charbonneau, Linda Brockdorff, Nancy Hool, Dee McNichol. The cheerleaders ' entry in the Homecoming parade SPORTS As the Vikings of old were often forced to defend themselves, so were the Marysville Vikings of 1966. Their strength, like that of the early Norsemen, lay not only in defense but in attack as well. This year’s Vikings, being tops in both, enjoyed the fruits of victory in many a battle throughout the year. 36 The 1965 Vikings and Senior Lettermen (Back Row) Art Neumann, Manager; Bob Jeffries, Denny VanWormer, Bob Partridge, Bill Tack, Jim Smith, Durnell White, Don Wilson, Denny Weymouth, Rick Hija, Gib Heim, S tephens, Coach Walt Braun. The ’66 Vikings display of talent and spirit carried them through the season and on to the Regional championship. Although not a tall team, they were fast. Speed, along with fine shooting and excellent rebounding, gave the Marysville Vikings their second consecutive SCAL championship. They then went on to District competition where they won a couple of squeakers to capture the District title. On to the Regionals went the spirited Vikings! Playing in Flint’s huge IMA stadium, the Vikings won their three games thus becoming the fourth Marysville team to become Regional champs. Our congratulations, boys for a job well done. 65 - 66 Basketball Scoreboard League Scores Opponent We They Romeo 54 75 Marine City 76 63 Yale 100 66 Cros-Lex 89 45 Capac 78 52 Armada 78 48 St. Clair 79 58 Richmond 102 72 PHC 80 78 Algonac 83 63 Marine City 87 77 Yale 64 41 Cros-Lex 64 39 Richmond 57 32 St. Clair 72 65 PHC 75 97 Algonac .... 67 62 District Scores Marine Citv , 70 69 PHC 54 53 St. Clair 83 69 Regional Scores Elkton- Pigeon- Bay Port 75 74 Otisville- Lakeville 64 58 Flushing , 74 67 Quarterfinal Score Royal Oak Shrine 59 66 Won - 21 Lost - 3 The sign above reflects the feelings of MHS students toward their basketball team. ACTIVITIES Vikings weren’t always in battle and neither are Marysville High’s Vikings. Not everyone can partici- pate in sports and so a variety of activities is offered to help develop the talents and attitudes of the “non- battlewinners.” These activities are important. They can supply some of the most rewarding high school experiences. In December, girls from the St. Clair area schools participated in various indoor sports at a play day, sponsored by Marysville. The GAA also sponsored both a mother-daughter and a father- daughter play night. The high- light of this year’s activities was the basketball sports tourna- ment held in February. Both the J.V. and the Varsity teams of Marysville rolled over their op- ponents — Algonac, Cros-Lex, and Port Huron Catholic, to be- come the tournament champs. In addition to the club’s regular activities this year was eight bowling teams which competed among each other. PEP BAND (Back Row) Bob LaGruth, Dave Garrett, Robbie Bier, Carl Decator. When a missle base is put in Putman’s Landing, a quiet New England town, the townspeople strongly object to it. The public relations man from the Army tries to calm things down, but bedlam breaks out. Many funny incidents and accidents lead to an exciting climax. The play was directed by Miss Tenpas and Joe Pavlov, Student Director. JUNIOR PROM This year’s J-Hop was pre- sented on January 28, 1966 by the Junior class. Elab- orate decorations adorned the gym of Gardens School and exquisitely dressed Vikings danced to the music of “The New Sounds.” A dance of this nature re- quires a lot of planning and a lot of work. We con- gratulate the Juniors for their fine job. Their ef- forts made the 1966 J-Hop a memorable evening for all who attended.
