« — — - Welcome to The Viking . . . 1960 The staff of the Viking presents your yearbook for 1960. We warmly welcome you to Marysville, if this is your first year here. If you are a veteran of these halls, we hope we can bring back fond memories through the Viking. Your joys and tears, good times and bad times, serious and carefree moments are all reflected in this one book. In future years you will cherish these experiences of mixed emotions, and we hope that your 1960 yearbook will be an agent for your memories. The Yearbook Staff Contents Junior High 6 Senior High 16 Activities 30 Sports 62 Senior Section 76 Junior High Plans are underway for a new junior high building to be completed by next fall. Shown viewing the plans are the members of the board of education, left to right: B. E. Neal, Richard W. Kern, Clarence E. Heeke, Norris A. Hanks, Superintendent; Wm. A. John- son, and Louis Schmorrow. This has been a busy year for members of the Board of Education. Projects included the completion of plans for the new Junior High School, expansion of the Junior High School -Senior High School site and parti- cipation in the Port Huron-Marysville Area Study and the Wurzel Committee reviewing new and proposed school legislation. Work was continued on the development of the play- ground area at the Marysville Gardens Elementary School and the revision and extension of the Code of Policies and Procedures for the school District. In addition, the Board had devoted time to meetings with committees of teachers who are studying our curricula to make possible extensions or improvements of pre- sent offerings. Duties and responsibilities of board members are growing with the expanding school system. However, Board members have accepted this extra load willing- ly, considering it a privilege to serve the school and community. Toilers on the Job In the picture on the left is Lillian Duncan, bookkeeper for the Board of Education office, and right is Mar ie Knuth, secretary and book- keeper for the Board of Education. These two are, in effect, the motor works of the office. They keep up correspondences, file papers, keep the books and in general keep the Superin- tendent’s office running smoothly. Many praises are due! 6 Junior This has been an extremely busy year for Mr. Stanley Hardman, Principal of the Marys- ville Junior High School. In addition to tending to his everyday routine of principal of the pre- sent junior high, he has been busy making plans for the use of the new junior high school build- ing which should be completed sometime during the 1960-61 school year. How appropriate it would be, at this time of year, if each person would take an audit of how they make use of their time. Every per- son has a “bank -of -time” from which we spend our days, hours, minutes or seconds. The “bank” seems to have an unlimited supply of hours and many of us fail to make check on how we are spending them. The success of individuals is often determined by how they spend their alloted hours and days. We can affect time by spending it profitably and pleasantly both for ourselves and associates or we can do just the opposite, we can be sarcastic or have a sense of humor; we can be happy or melancholy; friendly or hostile. These characteristics and many others de- termine how we affect time, ourselves, and our friends. A little time spent in planning pays large dividends in personal satisfaction and time saved. Putting off tasks until we have an insufficient amount of time to properly complete the assignment only results in frustration and an improperly prepared lesson. How wasteful to squander our time by trying to race with the calendar or the clock to do our work! We often hear some one say how the day drags or time seems to go so slowly. Routine, repetition or monotonous activities slow down the clock and make the day seem longer. Time will seem to go faster and will be more profitable when we insert variations in our everyday life. These activities take planning and thinking and cannot be accomplished by haphazardous or random undertakings. The happy, successful person will frequently take an audit of his “bank-of- time.” Are the hours being squandered or wasted? Could the project have been accomplished in less time and in a more profitable manner? Why not take an audit of your “bank -of— time? ” How are you spending your alloted day, hours, minutes or seconds? OMER P. BARTOW Principal 32 Two “Gals Friday,” busily at work, perform their daily tasks. Mrs. Helen Perkins (left) and Judy Briggs (right) are the Senior High office clerks. Among their jobs are typing, accounting, and book- keeping. T Will it ever be my turn?” Perhaps this is what is on the minHc of the students waiting to see their counselor. Helpers At Work The counseling program at Marysville High School is shared by Miss Aharas Kresin and Mr. Burman Misenar . In the pictures the counselors may appear to be unoccupied , but if you have ever tried to contact one, we are certain that you know otherwise. Perhaps Mr. Misenar was busy giving an achievement or an aptitude test, or enrolling another student, or setting up a four -year program for someone, or helping a pupil decide on a vocation, or a million other things with which he keeps himself busy. Miss Kresin, on the other hand, may have been pro- cessing someone’s admission to college, help- him get a scholarship, writing recommendations for a student’s first job, or figuring grade aver- ages and rank in class . So you can see that a counselor’s life is not an easy one. The counselors also give personal guidance to students . If , perchance , there is a student who has an acute personal problem, the coun- selors will refer him to professional help. 33 Languages Miss Clare Vivian teaches English 12. and Span- ish I and IL She also advises the Amplifier staff and the Yearbook staff. Miss Vivian loves to ski and bowl in her spare time. Miss Jean Wilson is a new addi- tion to M.H.S. this year. They are from left to right: Marjorie Jokie and Lucille Stroh, freshmen; Judy Parniske, a senior; seated is Queen Kathy, also a senior; Colleen Conlee and Joyce Zimmer, sophomores; and last but not least, Judy Squires and Bonnie McPherson, juniors. The Seniors were very proud to have their class President crowned queen, and for good reason, too. If anyone deserved it, she did. Congratulations, Kathy! 60 “Our Man” was his name and “Drive Em Hard” was the theme of the senior float. Pulling the chariot are seniors portraying Hornets or the St. Stephen’s foot- ball team. These are Jere Horn, Carol Hollands, Martha Whitsitt, Joyce Conlee, Terry De Lano, Margaret Stephens, Emily Good- men, Mari Bader, Diane Camp- bell, Mike Warner, and last, but not least, Charlie Gosman. The senior float won first prize in the float contest — a worthy award ! Well, Kathy did it again! Here we see her proudly accept- ing the beautiful red roses that helped to make official her thrilling victory as Homecom- ing Queen for 1959. There was great joy as Tom Reilly, Student Council Vice-President, hand- ed our Miss Ingraham those flowers fit for a queen. Kathy was extremely exuberant, and we doubt very much if she will ever forget that glorious event. Juniors won second prize in the contest with their float. The theme was a huge egg-beater with St. Stephen’s Hor- nets thrown into the bowl. True to form, the Hornets were “whipped” that night. Congratula- tions, Juniors! You had a fine float. Prize-winning car belonged to Cindy Parker. The Parker’s “bug” portrayed a sick Hornet. A prize of $5 was awarded to Cindy, but she put it in the Junior class treasury. “Hornets” from left to right are Janet Pickard, Cindy Parker, Mary Gene Moore, Sandy Houle, and Gayle Pent- land. 61 To love the game beyond the prize Newbolt Varsity Football Front row -left to right: Dave Rock, Manager; Jim Ichenburg; Tom Harrington; Dave Goodmen; Bob Stinson; Norm Noble; Jerry Siemen; Warren Miller; Bud Siler; Phil Balon; Larry Brown; Ted Balinski; Manager Richie Sopha. Everyone who had the privilege to see these boys in action must agree, even the opposition. A great deal of hard work went into the making of this fine team. Working out in wind, snow, rain, and cold weath- er, perfection was the thought of each player. This was in each heart: to gain enough supremacy to hold down his chosen position— to outdo the other. Results? “We had a great offense,” said the football mentor. “Along with this, a strong defense held the opposition to a minimum of points.” Right: Larry Glenn carries the ball after receiving a pass from Paul Jackson. The play covered twenty -one yards. Many teams fell victim to this combina- tion play, including Cros-Lex, as shown here, played on October 23, 1959, at the Marysville stadium. The Vikings won with a score of 46 to 6. Below: Paul Jackson, a succes- sful pass-thrower who completed twenty-six of thirty-two passes thrown, is shown here in the St. Stephens game. This year’s squad is no less powerful. They are strong in many events , and not weak in any. The squad travels to big relay meets , invitationals con- sisting of many schools , as well as our own relays , invita- tionals, and then last, but the most relished of all meets by all boys who qualify, the State Finals. Throughout the season the boys participate in a number of dual and triangular meets . One of the most common sights at city part in the spring is Coach Wheeler with a stop watch, taking times of all boys in their respective events , always willing to help those who need and want help. Does it make you happy to know that you’ll never have to cram for another English exam, write answers to govern- ment questions, or sponsor a class dance? Does it feel good to real- ize that you won’t have to wear yourself out by yelling at football Charles Weichsler Sallie Weaver Martha Whitsitt Marion Wickings Joseph Wrubel games? After all, you went through all these things for three or four years, didn’t you? You deserve to graduate and get what you want. Well, what ’8 the matter?
