Mullen, G. arsity ,Several days before school opened last fall, the Marys- ville gridders began preparing for the football season. A large group of tanned muscle-men, boiling over with enthusiasm, greeted Coach Tom Branigan and his assist- ants, Toivo Piippo and Al Zemeck. Two weeks of staggering blocks and smashing tackles readied Coach Branigan's charges for Bellevue. The Hawks put up a fierce battle but succumbed to a brilliant running attack and a magnificent goal-line stand which held off the Marysville thrusts on four successive downs inside the Bellevue five yard line. The final tally, 14-6, climaxed the dedication of the Bellevue gridiron. Embittered by the loss, the Hawks opened their home season by overwhelming a supposedly strong Viking squad from Lake Stevens, 38-0, with nearly every Tom- BOYS' M CLUB Back row: Johnson, Ravine, Damish, Stock, O'Neil, Hen ault, Parker. October 12 was homecoming at Marysville, but all were disappointed when Arlington's Eagles outcharged and outran the Tommies 14-6. But all was not bad, for on the next Friday a determined Marysville team, though far behind at halftime, came through and upset highly- touted Burlington 21-20. But the rains came and losses to Edmonds, Sedro-W oolley, arch-rival Snoho- mish, and Anacortes in a close contest. But, surpassing the '49 team which tied highly-favored Twin Cities, the Tomahawks broke out in a fiery display of blocking and tackling to overpower the Cardinals 19-15 and end the season on a high note. These were: Pat Hots, president, Gordon Strom, vice-presidentg and James Harrison, secretary-treasurer. With the financial help of some of the town's or- ganizations the M Club bought doughnuts and cider and organized a Hallowe'en party for the kids in town to prevent their doing destructive pranks around town. In the afternoon some of the boys took the party to the Shoultes and Kellogg Marsh schools, and that evening the high school gym was filled with kids play- ing games and later in the evening dancing. The M Club Smoker, which serves as initiation for new members was one of the best attended and' most thrilling events of the year. Lemeuc. Front row: Tracy, Cladoosby, Ledford, H. Hunan, Bushey, Thompson, Duce, Elske. Freshman Football The first days of turnout we learned plays and got into condition. Dale Lian scored our touchdown against Mount Vernon, who won 25-6. The North junior game was close until the last minutes when they ran over us, winning 24-6. Harry Hansen scored this time. We practiced hard, and gave Snohomish fsupposedly the best in the leaguej everything we had. Though failing to score, we held the Panthers to fourteen points. Our last game we lost to Arlington 12-0 in mud and rain. We had a minimum of hard knocks, and much good experience and training to prepare us for varsity com- petition next year. We tried hard for our coach, Mr. Zemeck, who was patient with our greenness. vw 'A QQ' BOYS' M CLUB Back row: Moses, Olson Lyons, Smith, Doane, Cruver Amb, Mullen. Front Varsity Basketball The MHS Tomahawks started their 1950-1951 hoop shooting season in good style by winning five pre-season games against Twin Cities, Monroe, Bothell Ferndale and Darrington. They showed the hustling brand of ball that makes the game what it is today. League play started at the Skagit Valley School of Burlington. The Tomahawks lost this encounter, and then fell prey to the Panthers from Snohomish. In the next game the 'Hawks cdllected their first scalp of the year to the tune of 48 to 43 over Anacortes Seahawks fwho later became league Championsj. The Tomahawks met defeat in the next three hoopfests to Arlington, Mount Vernon, and the Sedro-Woolley Cubs. The Tommies seemed to have Lady Luck on their side the night they played the Edmonds Tigers as the Hawks surpassed the Tigers in all departments defeat mg the EHS lads 49 39 In voting done after the regular season of play the team voted unanimously that Pat Hots be given the inspirational award Pat was also voted honorary cap tam for the Hawks dunng the 50 51 campaign Gene Stock earned the free-throw trophy by shooting .711 per cent. And the best of luck to Art Hatch who will be in the driver's seat for next year's season. Art was chosen by his team mates as captain for the Sl-52 cage season. Throughout the season the fans saw a fine demonstra- tion of sportsmanship from Coach Piippo's boys as well as their real love of the game. A new club in MHS this year is the Future Nurses of America. To join, a girl must be seriously considering nursing as a career, must take a college preparatory course, and must maintain a C grade average. The activities have been visits to Everett General Hospital and Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle and a play, presented by the members. The FNA encourages girls to enter the nursing pro- fession, helps them choose a nursing school, and pre- pares them to meet the entrance requirements of the school of their choice. 'C ' F. F.A.
