Dena SWI5 HER With a schedule of nine games facing them, the Trojans played good, hard soccer all the way and though they lost some games, they have no alibis. Keeping teamwork and good sportsmanship as their main objectives, Coach Swisher's lads rolled up a .375 average as they won three contests and tied one. The squad: Ralph Warden, Joseph Bickerton, Marvin Asquith, Winfield Fowler, Norman Jones, Louis Bruzzese. Lawrence Gates, Robert Miller, Earl Strain, Paul Boertlein, William Ohge, Edward Dickerson, Elmond Dixon, Herbert Boswell, George Ptacek, Joseph Artino, Frank Marquette, Marion Klock. Paul Miller, Ernest Fankhauser, Arthur Anderson, and Herbert Hackett, manager. 1941 BOYS BASKETBALL Coach . , .,,.. ,. MR. DERR Swtsusn Coach Swisher was forced to mold a team with only one varsity man returning from 1939. Striking a four-game winning streak in mid-season, the Trojans pulled out with a very good season's record. The best games of the year were with Hyattsville and Annapolis. Bill Ford and Edmund Bosc were individual high-scorers. The team: Edmund Bosc, Marvin Asquith, John Camp- bell, Thomas Bircher. Paul Boertlein, Bill Ford. Millard McCoy, Roger Smallwood, Robert Miller, Joe Eaton, Lawrence Gates, George Bennsky, and Kenneth Blanden, manager. 'I94'l GIRLS BASKETBALL Coach ...,...,... .,... 1X Iiss RUTH WVARREN The 19411 girls basketball team staged a fine array of sportsmanship and talent. While the success of the season could not be counted by the number of games which were won, no one regretted the time that was given for practice and playing. Players on the squad were: Kitty Ball, Leola Carter, Gladys Gentle, Ardelle Godfrey, Frances MacArthur, Helen MacArthur, Mildred Montgomery, Betty Pickett, Bette Pumphrey, Carmella Roll, Martha Rose, and Harriett Wallace. 'I94'l GIRLS FIELDBALL Coach ...., . Miss MILDRED WHEATLEY The 194-1 girls tieldball team showed much courage and fighting skill, winning two and losing four as they ended the season just short of the .500 mark. It must be noted that there was prominent young talent shown on the field this year. The two high-scorers were Mildred Montgomery and Betty Pickett. Members on the team were: Thelma Baldwin, Leola Carter, Gladys Gentle, Ardelle Godfrey, Myrtle Luns- ford, Frances MacArthur, Helen MacArthur, Mildred Montgomery, Betty Pickett, Bette Pumphrey, Carmella Roll, and Harriet Wallace.

1940 BOYS SOCCER Coach . ..,.. .. MR. Dann SWISHER . With a record of six wins, one loss, and the remainder ties, MPHS boys can be justly proud of the 1940 soccer season. The bovs got off to a terrific start by snapping Rock- ville's three-year winning streak to the tune of 4-3. Other opponents were taken in stride, not with large scores, but by just putting the game on ice.', The greatest peak was reached when the team beat Hyatts- ville by coming from behind twice in the closing min- utes to nose out its adversaries 5--1-. The team: Paul Beyer, Marvin Asquith, Raymond Stack, Carl Travers, Warren Welch. Robert Parker, Marshall Pickett. Paul Boertlein, Earl Strain, Louis Bruzzese, Daniel Ewell. Robert Todd, Ruffner Hill, Francis Hardesty, and Cassius Carter, managerg Julius Scalise, linesman. 1940 BOYS BASKETBALL Coach Ma. Dena Swismza MPHS had a full schedule for the boys' basketball season of 1940. Paul Beyer led the squad by running up a total of 106 points in 18 games. only 20 points short of the school record. In one of the more thrilling contests, the team took a hard fought game from the National Training School. The final score was 26-22. ln the fourth period, NTS rang up point after point. but the team rallied to meet the attack, A 17,14 victory over Woodward was the last victory of the season. The squad consisted of Marvin Asquith, Paul Beyer, Marshall Pickett. Daniel Ewell. Robert Parker, Ralph Palmer, Francis Hardesty, and Julius Scalise. manager. 1940 GIRLS BASKETBALL Coach Miss BIILDRED A. vi!-IEATLEY The Girls' Basketball Sextette of Maryland Park won five out of the eight games they played. The line-up consisted of Captain Norma Godfrey, center forwardg Cora Marquette, right forwardg Bette Pumphrey, left forwardg Anna May Marquette. center guardg Helen MacArthur, right guard: Carmella Roll, left guardg Leola Carter, Gladys Gentle, Harriet Wal- lace, Frances MacArthur, substitutesg Mildred Mont- gomery, manager. The most thrilling game of the season took place at Bladensburg on February 22, 1940. From the beginning of the game to the finish, both teams played with spirit and fight. The final whistle found MPH5 victorious to the score of 21-7. 1940 GIRLS FIELD BALL Coach . Miss MILDRED WHEATLEY Our Girls' Field Ball Team enjoyed an especially successful season in 1940, winning five out of six games and tying the other. Norma Godfrey was the Captain and Manager for the season. The girls and positions are: Norma Godfrey, center halfbackg Anna May Marquette, left halfbackg Arlene Saar, right halfbackg Leola Carter and Frances MacArthur, right fullbacksg Ardelle Godfrey, left full- back, Helen MacArthur, goal-keeperg Bette Pumphrey, right wingg Cora Marquette, right inside: June Saar, left insideg Mildred Montgomery, left wingg and Car- mella Roll, center forward.

1941 TOUCH FOOTBALL Coach: NIR. Inu N1EAsEL1. The inaugural year for this spurt at NIPHS was a very successful one. Though the griddt-rs pot nfl lu Q1 slow start, they took their last games of a hw-ganiv schedule to pile up a .600 percentage. lk-at-li Nl:-ascll was wry proud of his boys as they rolled up exactly twice as many points as their opponents, 110 to 55. The varsity included: Edmund Bosc, john Campbell. .lust-ph Eaton. Robert Perry. Roger Smallwoud. Robert llardesty. Edward Trible. John Nlullikin. John Nlurelantl. and Robert Orndorfif and Manager. Kenneth Bladen. 1941 VOLLEYBALL For the first time KIPHS has had a xar-ity xolleyball team which played other schools. The squad was coached by Mr. Swisher and had a good season con- sidering it was its first year of interscholastic competi- tion. Fifteen lassies tried out for the team that laid the foundation for future xolleyball teams at NIPHS. N135 that foundation be built upon for many years with many successful seasons! 1941 BOYS SOFTBALL 1941 marked the continuance of interscholastic soft- ball at MPHS. Coach Swisher arranged a schedule of six games for the season with other high schools in the county. A squad of thirty determined Parkers turned out for places on the varsity team. Of that number about half were veterans who participated in last year's county meet. With this wealth of material a fine season is anticipated. 1941 GIRLS SOFTBALL Coach Swisher had about twenty girls Irom which to pick the varsity softball team. The playing schedule included games with our regular county high school opponents, The Parkerettes also took part in the County field meet.
