BURSLEM The year 1941 records some really line achievements for the Student Patrol. Among these are the firm establishment of the order and conduct rules in the corridors, assistance in the supervision of school dances and basketball games, and close cooperation with the Student Council on the matter of handling habitual Offenders. SWISHER The Varsity Club composed of the athletes of MPHS, holds regular bi-monthly business meetings and assists in the management of the intramural athletics. The Club sponsored a social-recreational program through- out I94-1. The schedule included dancing, bowling, and deck tennis. A Tea Dance, Roller Skating Party, and Straw Ride were the high points of the social season. An End of the Season banquet attended by Parkers, Alumni, and star athletes lrom the entire state of Maryland supplied a colorful climax to the seas-On's activities. 1941 PARKISCOPE Editor-in-Chief . BIIRSLEM The Kodak Klub, the group boasting the largest membership at MPI-IS for the year 1941. conducts a very informational and entertaining program. Contests ranging in theme from landscapes to candid shots are sponsored. and awards are made during the regular club meetings. Artistic bulletin board displays are made periodically and excite much interest in the student body. 1940 BOYS SOCCER Coach . ..,.. .. MR. Dann SWISHER . With a record of six wins, one loss, and the remainder ties, MPHS boys can be justly proud of the 1940 soccer season. The bovs got off to a terrific start by snapping Rock- ville's three-year winning streak to the tune of 4-3. Other opponents were taken in stride, not with large scores, but by just putting the game on ice.', The greatest peak was reached when the team beat Hyatts- ville by coming from behind twice in the closing min- utes to nose out its adversaries 5--1-. The team: Paul Beyer, Marvin Asquith, Raymond Stack, Carl Travers, Warren Welch. Robert Parker, Marshall Pickett. Paul Boertlein, Earl Strain, Louis Bruzzese, Daniel Ewell. Robert Todd, Ruffner Hill, Francis Hardesty, and Cassius Carter, managerg Julius Scalise, linesman. 1940 BOYS BASKETBALL Coach Ma. Dena Swismza MPHS had a full schedule for the boys' basketball season of 1940. Paul Beyer led the squad by running up a total of 106 points in 18 games. only 20 points short of the school record. In one of the more thrilling contests, the team took a hard fought game from the National Training School. The final score was 26-22. ln the fourth period, NTS rang up point after point. but the team rallied to meet the attack, A 17,14 victory over Woodward was the last victory of the season. The squad consisted of Marvin Asquith, Paul Beyer, Marshall Pickett. Daniel Ewell. Robert Parker, Ralph Palmer, Francis Hardesty, and Julius Scalise. manager. 1940 GIRLS BASKETBALL Coach Miss BIILDRED A. vi!-IEATLEY The Girls' Basketball Sextette of Maryland Park won five out of the eight games they played. The line-up consisted of Captain Norma Godfrey, center forwardg Cora Marquette, right forwardg Bette Pumphrey, left forwardg Anna May Marquette. center guardg Helen MacArthur, right guard: Carmella Roll, left guardg Leola Carter, Gladys Gentle, Harriet Wal- lace, Frances MacArthur, substitutesg Mildred Mont- gomery, manager. The most thrilling game of the season took place at Bladensburg on February 22, 1940. From the beginning of the game to the finish, both teams played with spirit and fight. The final whistle found MPH5 victorious to the score of 21-7. 1940 GIRLS FIELD BALL Coach . Miss MILDRED WHEATLEY Our Girls' Field Ball Team enjoyed an especially successful season in 1940, winning five out of six games and tying the other. Norma Godfrey was the Captain and Manager for the season. The girls and positions are: Norma Godfrey, center halfbackg Anna May Marquette, left halfbackg Arlene Saar, right halfbackg Leola Carter and Frances MacArthur, right fullbacksg Ardelle Godfrey, left full- back, Helen MacArthur, goal-keeperg Bette Pumphrey, right wingg Cora Marquette, right inside: June Saar, left insideg Mildred Montgomery, left wingg and Car- mella Roll, center forward.
