IQEWGIQD More than three centuries ago, a heroic band of men and women left their homes in a far-off land and crossed many miles of strange ocean in their quest for freedom. Their in- domitable spirit lifted them high above mere physical priva- tion and enabled them to reach a new world. We, of Maryland, are grateful to those immortal souls who planted their flag and principles firmly upon this soil. ln these chaotic times, we are well reminded of that dauntless spirit which gave our forefathers courage to leave their comfortable homes and journey to a distant and un- known shore, so that the right to live as free people and the right to worship according to their own dictates would not be denied them. Today, we are proud to say that this same spirit still en- dures. We are happy in the knowledge that we still preserve that which those brave people established here. This is our priceless heritage, and we have endeavored to portray it as the theme of this Right Angle in the hope that each of us will steadfastly resolve to defend forever this God- granted freedom. Miss Quilts Warren It is not the good fortune of all students at Maryland Park to come under her good influence as a teacher, but there are few who do not profit by her work as Assistant Principal. and considerate archi- ln this capacity she is the thoughtful tect who originates the plans for rnost of the extra-curricular worker and helper to activities enjoyed by all. A tireless students and teachers alike since she became a Parker in 1936, she is always ready to lend a capable., helping hand in her nonchalant, but cheerful manner for the good of lVlPl-IS. The Classes of l94O and 10441 wish to show their appreciation of her loyalty and zeal hy dedicating this RIGHT ANGLE to her. DEDICATIGN ua The Classes of 1940 and 19111 wish to express their grati- tude to Mr. Samuel W. Fishkin for his able assistance in the production of this yearbook. We owe him a huge vote of thanks for the many hours he spent in planning this book and guiding it through its successful completion. His enthusiasm and perseverance are reflected in these pages, and played no small part in encouraging the Staff to put forth its every effort to secure subscriptions, advertise- ments, photographs and drawings, and to accomplish all the other details which go to make up an annual. Appreciation is also expressed for the fine work done hy Mrs. Margaret A. Brown in supervising the art illustrations, and for the exacting care which Mrs. Helen H. Brashears gave to the preparation of the copy. WW, , ' W-.fig s GCU iq VISQP .y ,gpu ,W M is i Q Qfcvs300m..Q V WW! MV. The class officers for that year were Robert Smith, presidentg Violet Smith, vice-president, Raymond Stack, secretary, and Ralph Palmer, treasurer. The following year, these Parkers emerged as oriented veterans of a full yearis standing and arose in their own esteem accordingly. Although they decreased in number to one hundred and four, did they not now have a class beneath them? In '38, they became Juniors and made bold to speak of the lowly Freshmenf' Real upper classmen at last! Freshman days became vague memories as the distinction of soon becoming Seniors brightened the near future. 1939 and the last round! They had now arrived at the atop of the heapf' These now seventy-four Seniors possessed that grown-up feeling and the sense of real achievement that comes from pushing forward to finish in the lead. Ralph Palmer, Paul Beyer, and Daniel Ewell proved themselves promising athletes and added many laurels to the brow of their Alma Mater. Ruth Kiefer and Dorothy Humes devoted much of their time to the production of this annual, and respectively received the saluta- torian and valedictorian awards. Janet Smith in her capactiy as editor-in- chief guided the course of the Parkiscope. Paul Martin as president directed the progress of the Student Council. The Senior oflicers for the 1940 Graduating Class were Robert Smith, president, Ellis Hanback, vice- president, Florence Hamilton, secretary, and Ruiiner Hill, treasurer. Leaving behind them a splendid record and words of gratitude and good will for their faithful teachers and fellow Parkers, the Class of 1940 bids Maryland Park au revoirl 'Wa new P-fs QQ w,. x. ?'yy4,A- nd, nb, X , ... 5 -ht C ave? v 4 K , wif fgriq, I 'if R , '4 if-lg Q 5 i . ,ff JK ,N Q X ...uv J L M I SI! 11 l ' 1 - - 635, mer ,fry u, 1 a 1: V 'h'N , . ,gs- i ww Q ! 1- .A .ai ,Xi 5' 'B Ex ., ,163 ' 3 M 22? PAUL MARTIN Secretary ,..., , .. . NORMA GODFREY Maryland Park is particularly proud of the Student Council program of 1940. The members not only suc- cessfully regulated hall traHic, but also planned and carried out a very successful clean-up-week. A constitutional amendment to elect the ofiicers of the Council through vote of the school as a whole was incorporated. The representation from the Junior and Senior classes was also increased so that the council membership is now greater than it ever was before. Miss Warren, Mr. Measell, and Mr. Himes were the faculty advisers for the year. 1940 PARKISCOPE STAFF Editor-in-Chief , , , . .
