FOREWORD ' ' Book of the Year ' The Book of the Year ... an appropriate tlieme for the Battlefield, since our life at Mary Washington is built large! j ' around books. As we begin college life on the hill, a whole world of new books, new faces, new experiences, and new impressions comes into our lives. Through our books and classroom experiences we explore new realms of knowledge. Guided by our professors and advisors, we begin the pursuit of excellence. Slowly we gain confidence in ourselves and begin to look around at the many offerings of our college. We are introduced to the multitude of extra-curricular activities that present opportunities to develop leadership and responsibility. We feel our- selves growing socially as well as intellectually. During our years at Mary Washington we also come in contact with and learn to appreciate the new ideas and new acquaintances that make up our college community. We feel the beauty of our surroundings, the warmth of our friends, and the spirit of dormitory ' living. Although it would be impossible to capture between covers the many intangible aspects of life at Mary Washington, we have tried to include on the pages of the Battlefield pictures and words that will recall for each girl her own special memories of college life during the past year. It seems especially fitting that The Book of the Year should feature the people, places, and acti- vities that have made this year on the hill such a memorable one.
