WELCOME BACK DANCE September 23, 1983 To start off the new school year, the Girls ' Athletic Association sponsored the Welcome Back Dance. Dressing in the theme of the 50 ' s and 60 ' s and danc- ing to the Oldies but Goodies helped promote school spirit. For the incoming freshmen, this was the perfect time to make new friends as well to become acquainted with school social activities. The up- perclassmen were given the chance to renew old friendships and to mingle with others, as well as just having a great time. The Welcome Back Dance was a huge success, financially as well as socially! 1 . Kelly Busia and Rich Collins strut their stuff. 2. The Welcoming Committee. 3. Hey baby, what ' s shakin ' ? 4. Just Kickin ' it! I 58 Activities Section

i COMON AND MAKE IT GREAT! If you ever drove by school in the morning during summer, you would have seen all the pep squads hard at work perfecting their routines. Why were these routines practiced so early in the summer you ask? Well, on July 5th all pep squads were to be on their way to USA camp in Santa Barbara. Every summer the new pep squads go to USA camp for four days to learn routines, cheers, and chants for the upcoming year. There are many dif- ferent workshops to attend each day, including unity workshops and Cap- tain ' s Corner ' . On the second day, each squad is evaluated on their home routine, and are given ribbons based on the level of performance. Everyone became a lot closer over those four days and did many crazy things. People expressed their excite- ment in many strange ways. They jumped in the pool with clothes on. showed their love of Peter Con- nie (. . . he ' s got the looks, got the bod . . .), made ' fuzzy ducks , dressed up like total nerds, and some even felt the need to be just like a flower . . Each squad also met different squads from other schools and became close companions for those four, hard- working days . . . We made the time we had at camp the best it could be, the songs we ' ll always remember sung by Peter Durgee. The four days went by awfully quick, but in that time we proved we were united by bringing home the SPIRIT STICK! 1. A hug a day -keeps the lonelies away. 2. This saying sums up our stay at USA. 3. Flash ' em that Mary Star Spirit!!! 4. Peanut, peanut butter, and JELLY Activities Section 57
