When you selected the cook book for your CHRONICLE theme this year, my thoughts turned to The joy of Cook- ing, the only cook book with which I am familiar. In the introduction to that book there is this masterpiece of understatement: Your first efforts may result in con- fusion .... This truism applies to almost all human en- deavors. Furthermore, it is not Wise to assume that today's confusion will spontaneously bring tomorrow's orderly arrangement. As you graduate from Mary Institute, I trust that you will be able to mix in the right proportions theory and practiceg restraint and generosityg laughter and compassiong the finite and the infmiteg so that you can write your own book on The joy of Living, and later, as a sequel, The joy of Understanding. fone!!
