Sitting alone in front of the open ire nestled deep among the tall, stately tree- trunks, I, feeling drowsy and sheltered as a Well-fed kitten, fell to musing. As the warmth seeped into my flesh, and the soft-scented pines rustled gently, nostalgic thoughts filled my mind, former joys-former sorrows, all combining to fashion a person, a human being, one a little different from the rest. I wondered how I was different from the rest of the world, and if I was, why was I? Maybe someone else sitting here, gazing into the livid, changing coals, would be thinking the same thing. What things about me are different? I have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. I am in command of all my faculties, as is everyone else, yet I am different. I laugh and cry in a special way. That shows me, for no one else laughs or cries just as I do. But those who, consciously or unconsciously, copy someone else-do they have a really special personality, or are they just shells, masking other people,s Ways? It's hard to be someone entirely individual, because everyone mocks and thinks you're queer, yet our world is supposed to be growing more modern and stream- lined. How can our world be modern, even if autogyros, glass buildings and tele- vision become necessities, when our thoughts are still as narrow and stilted as they are. However, there has to be some law and order 3 all have to follow certain patterns of living so that they can work together smoothly and efficiently. Where does per- sonality end, and habit begin! It's so very hard to tell. p I wonder, too, why Pm on this earth. Whatgood am I? I'm not a great artist or designer, doctor or lawyer, and I don't think I could ever be a very good brick- layer. So what cm, I here for? Maybe it's to make other people happy tho', to do that, you have to be good, and sweet, and understanding, which I very seldom am except when I read a book like Alcott's Little Women, and then the effect lasts only about three hours. Maybe Iill have a vision and will perform some great deed, or perhaps I'll die, While pitifully young, for some stirring cause, but then again, I might grow up and live a normal, everyday sort of life, which would do no one any good. I really donit know what I'll do. lt,s so very hard to, tell. With these thoughts still stirring lazily in my relaxed, yet humming, brain, I drifted off to sleep, with the soft light of the glowing fire, still fiickering thru the shadows. . BARBARA JANE LANE Class of '47 fDead End Streets First Honorable Mention in the Alumnae Essay Contest of May, 1945. I drove up one the other day! In my mind the coming Prom,' warrants a new evening dress, but the shops did not feel the same way as I did. They had no decent material, no dresses hearing price tags that did not literally make my eyes pop, and in some cases they even had nothing to display. It is excursions like this that often cause me to wonder, Is this trip necessary ? We go up many blind alleys and dead-end streets in our lives. If only we followed the map-but who wants to follow a map? Maps are for those who do not travel! However, once at the dead-end, what next? Turn around, and it is really amaz- ing what interesting sights can he found when you are driving in the opposite direction on the other side of the street. In my case I discovered a little road leading to a shoe store. I had unsuccessfully gone downtown to buy an evening dress, and I came home with a pair of shoes. Just think how much fuel, or rather energy, could be saved if we were not con- stantly raeing up dead-end streets! ln this time of national strife, both fuel and energy need to bc conserved, but we would miss much fun were it not for our fruitless trips. And fun is also essential. The sign post said, La Rue de Vie. How were we to know when to turn? As life goes on the policemen become fewer, the turns more abrupt and the side roads more frequent. We are in no hurry to reach our destination. We are the drivers, and the road is ours. JUNE ORMROD Class of ,46 Cum Laude FROM THE CLASS OF 1946 MARY MoRR1s GAMBLE ANNE KIEFFER MARGARET LEE JONES JANET MCAFEE The national honorary society known as Cum Laude was founded just forty years ago g but just as in the case of Phi Beta Kappa, the sister organization, among colleges, it was many years before girls were invited to fraternize. Our own chapter was installed in 1941 by the officers of the Saint Louis Country Day School chapter, the other member of the society in this vicinity. Eligible members from any class are those students who have an honor record up to the time of election and who stand in the upper fifth of the class. Miss Heron and Mrs. J oedicke are the officers of the Mary Institute chapter. The initiation ceremony for the new members is held in Miss Heron's oiiice prior to commencement. ..92.. The Icebox Second Honorable Mention in the Alumnae Essay Contest of May, 1945. Some of them are 1920 models, which their owners have either bought since the war, or have been trying tosell for ten or more years, but, no matter how dingy or halting in action, the icebox is a great and useful appliance. In the daytime, after coming home from school hungry and possessed with the power to eat the whole contents of the icebox, I hate it and iight in vain against the lure of the kitchen. That white and chrome beast in the corner of the room seems to be begging for inspection. Naturally, for I am no saint immune to temptation, I give in. Back come pangs of conscience at the deed I have com- mitted, and I am once again three pounds heavier and possessed with a what- can-I-do-now-that-it's-done ?,' feeling. At night, when I am in a mellow mood and not at all prone to fight again with my conscience, the icebox and I renew our friendship. My family must thoroughly believe that our house is inhabited by mice, for every night at eleven-thirty they hear squeaks, bangs, sometimes a crash, and always some noises, which all are, of course, merely caused by the progress of their famished daughter c1'eeping down- stairs, opening the refrigerator door, robbing it of its most interesting contents, and devouring same. One of the greatest attributes of our icebox is its continual presence. After dates, it can always be depended on to be sitting faithfully in its usual position, and not moved, as our cookie-jar sometimes is. People-meaning boys-also react favorably to our G. E. Who is there who can resist the whims of a woman when he is agreeably stuffed with turkey, cokes,', cake, ice cream, and chicken? Our icebox seems to be the mecca of one certain crowd, for at least once a week the doorbell rings, and I hopefully answer it, but before I can say hello or even slam the door I am carried by the tide to the kitchen. When I become fully con- scious again, it is too late. The icebox is picked of every bone, and not only it, but the house, too, is deserted. The blight has again descended like a storm-and left as quickly. This type of raiding will eventually pack me off to boarding school, for, be- yond any doubt, Mother will always beat me downstairs early the next morning and see the general mess and confusion before I can straighten it a little. Her anger is not too great, however, until she opens the doors of Old Faithful and finds it not only in a turmoil, but also cleaned of every red-point of meat! Since the last attack on our icebox, it has been truly locked, bolted, and nailed, with only Mother knowing the secret combination required to give the sesame', once again to our dear G. E. and bring brief moments of popularity on our kitchen. PATRICIA VOLLMER Class of ,46 ..93.-. T Cfcwd .Mdfory As graduation's drawing near We thought we might convey The story of our upward climb To where we are today. 'Twas '34 when we arrived Beginning Kindergarten We didn't know what was ahead 'Cause we were only startin'. ln first grade Miss Shea guided us Through our brand new reading books She taught us how to add and print And wc hunted birds in nooks. Second grade came in '36 And we had loads to do. We wove a lot of doll hats And played some good games, too. ln 1937 when we had lleaehed the grade of three, We went outside and nailed name plaques Upon a group of little trees. In fourth grade which was '38, We didn't go on hikings, For we were far too interested In making ships of Vikings. In '39 or in fifth grade, We studied Mexico And in our eyes it was the place We hoped someday to go. Our horse-show in 1940 When we were in sixth grade Was acclaimed a great success 'Cause a lot of fun it made. The seventh grade in '41 Was a year of a big event We learned our apple-blossom dance A great accomplishment. The eighth grade was an important year As we went upstairs at last We also gave Pandora's Box A Latin play in which the class was cast. Ninth grade came in '43 And with it came the yen For those members of the weaker sex Commonly known as men. We walked across the bridge in tenth Each in her yellow dress For we were in the daisy-chain A picture of loveliness. In eleventh grade in '45 We gave our junior prom It was, as the leap year, a big success And in our memories will live on. Now thatlwe are seniors, B. W. O. C.
