The principals in the east, the pupils of our sehool, will be seen in their hours of study, exeitement, enter- tainment, relaxation. We regret to announce that this play will be found even shorter than the 1942 edition. More and more the realization eoines home to us that our stage is a small part of the great world. Aeeorclingly, a number of features has been omitted altogether. We regret especially the absenee of the elass pictures of the Lower School pupils, those Faithful young apprentices of ours. Some other aets have also been omitted or eonclensed. llow- ever, our numerous apologies shall not keep you, our loyal auclienee, waiting longer. The library is not merely a room containing' a, well-organized eolleetion of booksg it is the scene ot our liveliest elass meetings. Our class- rooms serve not only for mliseussions of lessons but for the formation of lasting irienflships between elassmates anal teachers as well. The poplar trees lining the high- way are important to us, not solely because we plantefl them, but because they are the symbol of our blossoming forth into maturity. The amphitheater brings tears to our eyes, not beeause ot its beauty, but beeause of the emotions we experienced at the eoronation of the May Queen. The Hag waving above our heads is for us some- thing beyoncl convention 5 it is the constant reminder of the cluty we must fulfill lor our eountry. This expresses in some measure what this dramatic setting means to us. emorioufn Iiuring Ilia: IHISI' ywii' our svliool has losi IIii'01: gum! l'i'im-mls: Mr. S1-urs, Miss Stvvi-iisoii. :md Miss fliwiws. .XII wiiiviiilxm-i'wI our Iilmzijx' wiih gifts ol' Imoks I'i'm11 Thvii' own vollwiiuiis. With the spotlight thrown on sports, our play takes on the semblance of a three-ring circus. If the weather is fair, the several sets in one or more classes are wildly and gleefully gamboling over the greens andfor courts in the seasonal sport- tennis, hockey, soccer, baseball. Otherwise, if the curtain goes up in the gymnasium, we see quite a lot of props: equipment for basket-ball, volley- ball, or badminton: traveling rings, the ropes, buck, tumbling matsg and plenty of space for posture exercises, marching and dancing. Or per- haps today the play is a relay race. On your marlrs! Get set! GO! we it ' aj., 'Ilia ,rr big 3 . 's 1 M iv Q Y KN ifi 5, Q -1,l,1,. However, between showers, windy weather and damp spells, the ten- nis season progressed. Under favorable conditions our twelve well-kept eourts are the scene of many interesting tournaments. Instead of playing off elfmid the singles in the tall as has been done in previous years, the elasses eoznpeted in the doubles tourna- ment. Although representatives of all four classes played well and hard, the seniors eanie forth vie- tors. The twelve players froin the senior class have developed their torehand and baekhand plays through inany years of OQIFIIGSJE praetiee. All showed outstanding ability in their niatehes and invariably eanie forth Victorious. Much eagerness and enthusiasm is inspired in all elasses by the tennis ladder. The girls are plaeed aeeording to their ability. Many tiines after a gyni period, eoniing in from the courts or in the showers, one can hear, I inoyed up on the tennis ladder to- day. May l challenge you for t0IYlOI'1'0W,S H1iltCll?,, As usual the Clzronfcle goes to press before the singles teams have been formed, but we are eon- .. 73 tident there will he some close games if the hY02lfllPI'lJlI'tl will ever put away his umbrella. This rell-renee to ha rd-liought battles-to-rome is no re- lleetion on your top-rung position, Joannie, where you have rested pretty eonsistently for tour years. Many thanks to you, Miss Burlinganie. Nine full hours of absolute freedom! I am, for the duration of the night, master of time, and ruler supreme of space. lt is quiet, the darkness is kind, soft, and protecting. The cares of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow hang suspended in space, they have been left behind, and are to be found somewhere between today and tomorrow. For now there is no time. Only me, and thought, and God. There is no ugliness at night. Just pale silver shafts of moonlight and soft gray shadows. There are no rough corners, for they are hidden in the enveloping darkness. Of the bulky dresser that is so ungraoeful in the daylight, only the crystal gleam of the mirror in the moonlight can be distinguished. The moon and several of her beams are holding a silent conference at the foot of my bed. Of what do they whisper? No one knows, no one hears me as I lie, contemplating on the softness of the darkness and the gleam of the mirror as it flashes back the pale, pale silver of the moon- stream. God seems very near, He hears and oomprehends as I talk to Him, with no one else to hear but the cold glittering stars who are not interested, and the kindly moon who understands. I am thinking, thinking, and no one knows. I shall not sleep, for then l would know nothing of the whispering and seeretness of the night. I shall not sleep-I shall not sleep-. But now the rays of the moon have heightened! They are gold, not silver! The dresser juts out its sharp corners, and the room is bright. Where is the holiness and peace that I knew so well? It has fled on the silent pussy-feet of night, and I must wait, the long day through, till it shall steal baok again. SUE SH1LLINGToN, 745 Lament Awarded First Prize in the CHRONICLE Poetry Contest in the Upper School Alone in a tumultuous sea of silence, My drowning soul cries for a Wave of tone to save it from the depths. From afar a fragile murmur sends a gentle ray of hope, And the black horizon glows with the warmth of celestial harmony. As rising billows east me atop the crest of the waves, An exultant foree within me strives to grasp the surging melody. But my soul cannot attain the glory of the liquid beauty, And I perish. Brunton BILSKY, '43 -94... Tbe First Evening Star i Awarded First Prize in the CHRONICLE Essay Contest Through the still twilight the bells chimed the invocation of the vesper service. Gray streaks from the stained-glass windows and the flickering light of an occasional candle mitigated the duskiness of the waiting church. From the shadows the soprano voices of the choir boys were lifted in an ancient hymn. O, God, our help in ages past ' Our hope for years to come- The white-haired minister, bowing his head in prayer, heard the words and, sighing, lifted his eyes to gaze slowly upon the young faces before him, yet he saw not their faces but the ghosts of those who now were gone. Behind him the chorus swelled- A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone-U T'he image of John again stood before him. The wild, restless, fun-loving John, who had dreamed of greater worlds to conquer. The old man recalled the reckless impulsiveness that many years had failed to curb. He remembered John on the night before he had gone, sitting with his arms clasped around his knees, staring into the starry sky. Then, for the first time John had revealed, in a dreamy voice the idealistic nature that was hidden deep within his heart. The moonlight, flooding through the open window hadfsurrounded him and illuminated the proud pair of wings fastened on his uniform, and he had seemed so young and yet so eager to go. Now he was gone and would never come back. The hymn softly, reverently rose upward with the smoke of the candles- Time like a never rolling stone Bears all its sons away, They fly forgotten as a dream Dies at the opening day-D Yes, he was gone. He had mounted the skies and, among the clouds and the stars, had found his happiness-his dreams. Then one night, like his beloved shooting stars, he, too, had inevitably fallen from the heavens, vanishing from sight forever. The minister,s heart ached, and his mind reluctantly struggled to grasp the unbe- lievable truth that John, who had been so near, was now forever so far away, so inexorably gone. Then, as he turned his eyes in grief to the holy cross, he beheld the first evening star shining brightly, while the choiris song rising above the steeple tops, joined it in the twilight: O, God, our help in ages past Our hope for years to come-H MARY GARDNER, ,43 ...95....
