He attended. public schools in San Diego, graduating from San Diego High School in 1957. He attended. the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1961. His tirst assignment was aboard they Norfolkyhased destroyer USS DUPONT lDD-9411. LCDR SMITH was then selected by the Navy to pursue graduate stud- ies in engineering. l-le attended Stanford Universitl from 1962-1967 receiving Msterfs and Doctorate degrees in Electrical Engineering. He subsequenflll was assigned to the Escort Research Ship USS GLOVER lAGDE-ll as Weapons and Anti-Submarine Warfare Dfficer during the installation and oper- ational evaluation of three advanced surface ship sonar systems. From 1970 to 1972 LCDR SMITH served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as military staff assistant to the Deputy Directorof Defense Research and Engineering for information and Space Systems. He reports to USS MARVIN SHIELDS after a fifteen month tour of duty as Ex- ecutive Officer USS DOWNES lDE-1070l. LCDR SMITH is married to the former Jill Dorolhl' Tuffli of Menlo Park, California. They reside IB San Diego with their twochildren: Dorothy, 4, and Jerome Ill, 10 months. . t
