All the world s Public Speaking Club The Public Speaking club had for 1940- 41 its most active year since the club was formed in 1938. Under its adviser, Charles A. Lord. and program committee co-chairmen, Frank Reaves and Anne Chapman. the club had varied programs and activities. The four winners of the local state literary contest, all from the club were Anne Chap- man. extemporaneous speech: Frank Reaves. debate: Nadia Cohen, poetry: and Elise Swope, oration. everywhere Orchestra The Martinsburg high school orches- tra, composed of 25 pieces, had one ol its most active years in the history of the organization. They played for as- sembly programs ar l-ledgesville. Bunker l-lill. Shepherdstown. and Harpers Ferry, and for all of the dramatic pre- sentations here. Four members of the orchestra repree sented the school for the first time at the All-Stale high school orchestra. Of the four, two of them received first chairs: Eugene Price. trombone, and Bill Jones, bass. Audrey Clendening and Amos Turner received fourth and fifth chairs, respectively. in the second violins. stage Q Fjs-we ,,,,....,, gX Q5 xl T 4 if N2 -'-w ,UN ' X Dromotics Dramatics in the high school were high- lighted by the Junior and Senior class plays directed by Charles Lord, and the operetta directed by Miss Elizabeth Miller and James Andrews, directors of the glee clubs. The senior class play The Patsy was given Dec. 10 before an estimated crowd of 900. The principals of the cast were Doris Robinson, Patricia Harrington: Mary Jane Burkhart, Mrs. Harrington: John Reynolds. Mr. Harrington: Bill Stilwell, Tony Ander- son: Betty Ritter, Grace Harrington. The supporting cast included James Sibole, Vincent Townsend, Jeanne Corkran. and Beall Rodgers. The junior class play Anne of Green Ga- bles was given March l8, also directed by Charles Lord. The story is a familiar one. The principals of the cast were: Mildred Rinker, Anne: Irving Byers. Matthew: Viv- ian Whitelock, Marilla: Dorothy Powell, Mrs. Lynde: Billy Widmeyer, Gilbert: Mary Jane Webster, Diana. The others in the cast were Lottie Belle Cook, Marie Fulk, Jean Hicks, Paul Willis, Earle Johnson, Sarah Ar- nett. Helen Clark, and Norma Lee Eierro. The operetta Rose of the Danube was given April 28-29 under the direction of Mr. Andrews and Miss Miller, with Jeanne Cork- ran and John Reynolds in the lead. Others in the cast were Morehead Hollida, Mary Jane Burkhart, Vivian Whitelock, Billy Widaneyer, Franices Lamp-, Davlid Thorn- burg, Elise Swope, Fred Snyder, Marion Mc- Eerren, Donald Clark, Wendell Shrader, and Thomas Clapham. The cast was assisted by a host of dancers under the direction of Mrs. John Redue, the chorus, under the direction of Miss Miller and Mr. Andrews. and the orchestra, under the direction of Mr, Linger.
