Some- times it seems like you live at your job, but real- ly, what would you do without it? Debbie Schaef- fer would really be in the hole without her donuts. Ruth DuKa1z could lose her shirt! Without her job, lisa Gandre would have to forget about all ma- terial things. Pizza allows Doug Huck to stay in the upper crust, and what would poor Ronald do without all his Big Macs?! jobs are so important to our lives, and those of us who work deserve a lot of credit for going to a job. The surroundings of Martin Luther are a big part of ML life. Root River Park, McDonalds, I-Hop, and Kohl's all are important, but across the street we have one of the biggest parts of Ml. life. By night, Southridge looks quiet and peaceful, but by day it buz- zes with Martin Luther people. On half days, after school, on week- ends, or anytime, you will be sure to find students and teachers roam- ing around in the mall. Some go there to socialize with friends, others have jobs there, and some even go there to shop! l l Q vf W 7 - U V' A X M ag W 'ff-3 -N-'T . Wmmf . i' M Vw! Q ' Wlwunsw- 1 ' . 0 B . ' These two pages are dedicated to the prevailing mode of dress at Martin Luther. So many things are popular now--boots, skirts, suits, hats, quilted shirts, sweaters, V bibs, gauchos, scarves, letter jackets, and of course, blue jeans, just to mention a few. The fashions that are popular now won't be appreciated until your children say how funny everyone looked back in the olden days of the 70's. Before you belt them with the book, think back to the times you thumbed through your parents' books and laughed at their mode of dress. The world is filled with places to show off smiling faces, some may come and some may o . . . but all in the heart, the friends we know, the past. Undergrads, upcoming they take over Homecoming, Prom, and find- ing the bands and when we are gone we leave it in their hands. Of dances, sales, responsibility to do a better job the only way for them to be. And yet something's missing the graduates. Student life the core of the school of books and work the Writing tool. of friends and jokes the morning cokes the closeness of God miles of knowledge we trod, and yet something's missing the future. B.R. III Each of the four years we've been at Martin Luther brought us new adventure, but now comes the biggest adventure of all - meeting the real, outside world. After Spending four years together, now we say goodbye. We have so much to look for- ward to . . . and so much to remember. In these pages is preserved what we used to be and what we have become - the way we are right now - so that in the years ahead, when we've all gone our separate ways, We will not forget the way our high school days were, the way our good times were, the way our friends were . . . the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another . . . the way we were. Dear Members of the Class of 1977: Christ came into this world for a very specific purpose. He put it this way, The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost fLuke 19:1OJ. Seeking and saving the lost meant keeping all the commandments which We had broken, paying the penalty for our sins, and overcoming our triple enemy: sin, death, and the devil This required steadfastness, poverty, suffering, death, agony, and resurrection. His greatest accomplishment was man's deliverance from the old life of sin and slavery to a new life in God here and in eternity. Christ made this our primary purpose in life also when I-Ie said, As my-Father hath sent me even so send I you . He explicitly tells us that we are to be His witnesses and make disciples of all people. No matter what voc- ation we choose what college or university we will attend, or what situation we will experience next year, we are given the directive to spend our lives contributing directly or indirectly toward seeking and saving the lost. We are to be a people for others. Your high school, Martin Luther, with its dedicated faculy, has attempted to equip you for this life's task. Your experience in theology classes, worship services, personal communicadon with teachers, and shared relation- ships with fellow Christians have provided a setting for this kind of equipping to occur. Whether you take seriously the challenge God places in front of you is dependent upon your relationship with Christ. Since the Holy Spirit has led you to look into the loving face of jesus and accept Him as your personal Savior, you do have the power to follow Him and be His witnesses. You are different now. You can love even those who don't love you, forgive those who don't forgive you, say no to sin in which others indulge, say yes to Christ whenever He asks you to serve Him and witness of His love and forgiveness. Like St. Paul, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. The success of the future lies in His hands. How comforting to know that He assures us of His divine prescence when He promises, Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age . fMatt. 28:2Oj Congratulations, dear graduate! May God's abundant blessings be upon you and keep you in His loving and protecting care. May His kingdom continue to grow through your witness. Yours in Christ, Roman C . Led by Kevin Kais, who had 4 wins, they beat Racine St. Catherines 4-3. During the season several hitters stood out such as Kais, Jeff Lemke, and Mike Vallesky. This year's team, with mostly freshman players and a yotmg pitch- ing staff, lost some touch games but should be much improved next year. The 1977 j.V. baseball team is as follows: FRONT ROW: Coach Schnake, Mike Vallesky, Mark Peterson, Ernie Ladwig, Mike Wagner, Bob Sanders, SECOND ROW: Al Hafeman, Bob Duchow, Dave Kaphingst, Jeff Leml-te., Jeff Otter, BACK ROW: Gregg Bar- trom, jim Marquardt, Don Leifer, Kevin Kais, john Gehlhaart, Coach Schneider. The high point of the season was a last second shot made by Freshman jeff Lemke, that brought the win over St. Mary's. During the season they had a six game winning streak. The 1976 Varsity football team had a great season this year. With a 5-1 conference record they took second place. They had a rough time at first, losing 3 out of 4 games. Then because of a knee injury M.I.. lost Jim Dahl, a potential All-Conference lineman. Injuries like these hurt the team, but the players pulled together and won 4 out of the next 5 games. In two of these games, Racine and St. John's M. L. made surprising second half come- backs for victories. Next came the game against St. Mary's, a game that would decide both the Midwest Prep Championship and a chance for the Class B title. St. Mary's played a good game beating us 17-0, and later went on to take the Class B title. At the beginning of the season Coach Schneider had said that this would be the year to win the Class B Championship- we came very close. The Brass Choir began the program with 'A Christmas Suite followed by the Varsity band playing several traditional Christmas carols. The Symphonic Band ended the first half with Alleluia! Laudamus Te. The choirs were next with the Chorus doing several selections, with Christmas Calypso ending their part of the program. The major work of the Concert Choir was The Song of Christmas telling the Christmas story. First, our fearless leader, Miss Carey, without whom we'd all be in trouble. Next down the list are Co-edi- tors Debbie Schaeffer and Lisa Gandre. The list of important people is seemingly endless because we owe so much to members of the student body outside of the staff itself. Staff members include jaye Barnes, Lisa Bleise, Lori Cherney, Beth Ten Broeke, Beth Stach, Randy Block, Teri Sell, Teri Franz, Lorri Martin, Sandy Kurer, Bonnie Ten Broeke, Sandy Potterton, Roberta Jansa, Dawn Schaef- fer, Gretchen Sonstroem, jennifer Scott, Sherri Stach, Carol I-Iilman, and jill Kalten- brun. We would like to extend a special thank you to everyone else who helped with artwork, copy, and pictures, and to everyone who put up with us in all our various moods during the production of this book. We hope you liked the book this year and from all the Seniors on the staff, especially Lisa and Debbie, we wish you the best of luck in the years to come. This is the second year Martin Luther has had a Blood Donor Day. Last year the day was a success, but this year was really fantastic. Despite the usual feats of the needle and the thought of giving up a pint of that life supporting substance, many students, teachers, and some parents came to donate their blood in the hopes that they could help someone in need, or maybe even save a life. Donating blood is truly a rewarding experience for the giver. The Concert Choir began the evening of light- hearted music by singing several popular songs. This was the first year the Freshman Chorus was off- ered both semesters and they followed the Choir. Troubadours had a show all their own! Dressed in full costume they did a Frm Songa-thon complete with props and choreography. The Year book staff would like to say that we re- gret that we have no pictures of the choral portion of the concert, but the photagrapher from Cilento did not show up until the second half of the pro- gTam due to a problem on their part. The bands ended the concert with both popular and classical selections making it an evening of fantastic music. 142 Spring Concert XJ' QS 'NU Spring Concert 143 ML Passengers Take A Sentimental Journ The 1977 Prom Court: Debra Sie- vert, Debbie Ei- nem, Sue Nel- son, Lynn Schil- der, Jill Schmidt Rachel Bahr fQueenj, Tom Reyna fKingJ, Paul Povlick, Craig I-Iaupt, Mark Reiss, Dave A lfery, and Tim Gieschen. 144 Prom 'J . 'UQ ,,-'Y' , ., .1 M -- W -f --ff-AV ,, ,ef-..N.,sf..,.a --sf.-an June 5, 1977. The day we thought would never come is finally here! It is a day of many mixed emo- tions. As we sit through the service, some of us are reflecting back on the years gone by and are sad to see them end, while others are feeling that it is high time for a change and are glad to see four years of High School come to an end. And of course there are those who stand right in between feeling that it is time to move on, but also feeling a bit scared of leaving the security of High School and going out into that great big world and making something out of our lives. Of course there are the usual Graduation Day fears run- ning through everyone's minds: What if I trip on the step? or My hat's going to fall off! or that age-old rule of thumb: Shake with the right and receive with the left--or is it the other way around?! Despite all our fears, we all made it through the service without any mishaps! ! Congratulations to us all. Graduation 151 fn .Num , Autographs ea GEF! fiflfd?
