SSUSS A new decade, a troubled beginning. . . 4979-80 was a year full of issues which affected the entire world in one way or another. The Iranian crisis and Russian invasion of Afghanistan tested world peace. Economic instability and a volcanic blast were felt by the Pacific Northwest. 4980 was the start of a new decade and another year for elections and the Olympics. The entire world witnessed the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in September, a definite threat to world peace. The USSR was condemned by the U.S., world peace keeping organizations and virtually the rest of the world. Russian troops remained in Afghanistan. November 4, 4979 was the date of the takeover of the United States embassy in Teheran, Iran. Militant followers of the Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini seized the embassy and took 53 Americans hostage. A rescue attempt in April resulted in tragedy, as three U.S. helicopters encountered Qecganical failures and crashed, leaving eight Americans ea . The World Comes to America was the theme of the 4980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, New York. American speed skater Eric Heiden electrified the crowd by winning a winter Olympic record of 5 gold medals. A young U.S. Hockey team captured the hearts of America by winning the gold, the first in Hockey for the U.S. since 4960. The outlook for the Moscow summer games looks bleak for the U.S. because of a boycott in protest of the invasion of Afghanistan. Other nations joined the U.S. in that boycott. April 24, was freedom day for thousands of Cuban refugees who boarded boats for the United States. The U.S. economy continued to tumble, reaching an inflation rate of 4896. Economic problems were felt in the Bay Area as some businesses went bankrupt, while others :aid off many workers leaving them on the unemployment ine. Dormant for hundreds of years, Mt. St. Helens in Southwest Washington blew her top on May 48, leaving a wave of destruction. Many people were killed in the wake of the volcano. Millions of dollars were lost in areas that were covered with ash, and millions more in lost timber. 4980 was election year throughout the country. There was no difficuliy in finding someone who was willing To Boogie, Oogie, Oogie, or maybe even Slow Dance'n Swaying To The Music. Who ever said only people can dance? This year, as Sadie WenT lVluppeTs, each lVl.H.S. Miss Piggy chose her favoriTe KermiT and hiT The dance floor To Dance, Dance, Dance . All The sTudenTs enjoyed The Sadie in differenT ways. Many vislTed The Tunnel of love To Find Their Thrill on Blueberry Hill, some wenT Up, Up and Away on Their BeauTiful Balloons Qhelium balloons ThaT isp, and oThers decided ThaT They were Going To The Chapel and were gonna geT married. No maTTer whaT The new decade brings, one can be sure To find sTudenTs filing inTo The dances To LeT The GoodTimes Roll, and They're sure To have as good a Time as They did This year.
