T1-i-Hi-Y, hysical Education Students Discover Benefits of Physical Fitness t The goal of the physical education depart- ment is to develop students physically and men- tally through the mastering of new skills and knowledge of the importance of a strong, healthy body. The girls' physical education program en- compassed such diverse sports as golf, tumbling, tennis, and volleyball-all of which can enrich the student's life now and in the future. Boys learned the reguhfements of physical fitness as they participmed in physical fitness tests, basket- ball, apparatus, track, and other sports. Health classes, which include a program of first aid, personal development, anatomy, and other topics, give students the opportunity and impetus to improve their own health practices, as well as to aid others. Through participation in the physical educa- tion and health departments, any student can discover the benefits of physical fitness in a hap- pier, healthier life. 24

Social Science Department Adds New Course The social science department, in its diversified curriculum, gives students the opportunity and the impetus to be well informed, thoughtful, and active in civic affairs. Through this department, students learn that organized knowledge, constructively applied, can be the key to effective citizenship. Large group sessions, which feature lectures, films, and occasional guest speakers, proved again to be a helpful and beneficial means of teaching and learning and an interesting variant from the usual classroom schedule. World geography is geared to give underclass- men a textbook view of other lands and an under- standing of the different peoples and cultures of the world. A backward glance to the beginning of mankind, his development and the development of the diverse civilizations up to modern times is the study encountered by world history students, while U.S. history centers about the growth of America. Problems of democracy prepares students for the responsibilities of maintaining democracy in our land and provides the modern thinking and solutions for the problems they will someday face. This year the department expanded its offerings to include a special course in American government. It offered an enriching study of the intricacies of American government. History and problems of the world are discussed in the international relations class. Through this broad program of geography, history, and citizenship, students gain new knowledge and insight in the world of social science. Pat Holmes learns that lectures are an effective means of teach- ing U.S. history. From the look on Steve Gar- ner's face, it's hard to tell how he did on that test in world history. YAQUB A.
