Science Laboratory Work Aids Study Courses of the science department emphasized practical laboratory experience as an effective means of teaching and learning. General science students learned by inductive reasoning through laboratory and classroom work, while other stu- dents explored chemistry with a combination of textbook and laboratory experiments. The major change in the science department was the conver- I lmaa.. A ' I ,, ..,.. E I O - Ji fiwis 2: sion from traditional biology to Biological Science Curriculum Studies with two versions. The yellow version emphasizes the cell as the unit from which life is built, and the blue version derives from the concept that the molecule is the building block of life. In all its phases of study, the science depart- ment has expanded its offerings in a successful program of laboratory and classroom studies. ROBERT A. ELLIS W.S.U., B.S., O.S.U., M.S., Physics, Gen. ASQ? --. Mathematics Program Undergoes Revision The mathematics department was greatly altered this year with the conversion to the con- cepts of the new math. This system spotlights reasoning, not merely memorizing, in the devel- opment of mathematical fundamentals. The stu- dents are given theorems, axioms, and postulates so they can proceed to deduce and prove relation- ships, instead of the previously-used mechanical process of memorizing these relationships and rules. With the emphasis of the ability to develop and then apply fundamental mathematical know- ledge to new situations, students are better pre- pared for the college math that some will en- counter. The varying degrees of difficulty in courses covered by the mathematics department make it well geared to the needs of each individual. Courses in algebra, arithmetic, trigonometry, geometry, and modern math are offered to chal- lenge and broaden the student's math compre- hension. af .ygu ,,,,, yy 1 19
