Language Arts Students Begin Program Of Independent Study The students' abilities to express themselves verbally in conversation and composition were challenged by the Marsh- field English Department. Placement of the students in the various English programs was based upon capabilities in composition, grammatical understanding, and literature inter- pretation. Those students experiencing problems in English were placed in the basic program throughout their freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Average English students studied under the regular English curriculum. Students with a high aptitude who expressed a desire to learn received instruction in the honors English classes. Senior English students not planning to attend college studied practical English, whereas the college- bound students took advantage of the college preparatory and honors English programs. Now in its second year at Marshfield, Project English was taught in the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes. The project introduced curriculum in rhetoric, grammar, literature, and speech. Some students also initiated a program of independent study one period a week. This period was either spent in the library gathering source material or receiving special help from an instructor. Speech, journalism, reading labs, and world literature were again offered as elective courses of the English program.
