The Impact Never Fade; The Marshall University sesquicentennial celebration not only marks the 150 years of the school's existence, it also recognizes the impact of the university on the students and of the students on the university. MU makes an impact in the education each student earns, and it assists him or her in the competition for jobs following graduation. This lasting impression can be seen in the career suc- cesses of alumni such as Marvin Stone, former editor of US. New: and World Report and cur- rent deputy director of the United States Infor- mation Agency; Maj. Gen. Albin G. Wheeler, commandant of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces; Burl Osborne, president and editor of the Dalia: Morning New:; and Soupy 2 Opening Sales, comedian. Looking toward the future, programs such as the Society of Yeager Scholars will build a stronger student body when put into effect next year. Those students will be faced with the op- portunity to meet new academic challenges. New challenges also face the university as it plans the construction of a new fine arts facility and football stadium. With these new buildings come expectations: more talented performers e and more winning athletic teams. After 150 years, a lot of things change. New courses are offered; classrooms are remodeled; the clothes and hairdos of students differ great- ly; different faces can be seen on the tired bodies of students dragging their feet and lugging their Charging onto the field to :tart the Homecoming game, the Thundering Herd football team, cheerleader! and the Big Green Marthing Machine excite the crowd at Faidield Stadium. Standing in stately elegance beneath a 300- year-old beech tree, the john Marthall hut! recognize: the accomplithment: of the Chiefjmtite. books to an 8 a.m. lecture. Yet, some things stay the same - Old Main, the 300-year-old beech tree, the bust of John Marshall. A tragedy marred the journey from 1836 to 1986. A 1970 plane crash claimed the lives of the football team, parents, coaches, reporters, fans and friends. Seventy-four sons and daughters were lost, but the crash brought with it the chance for friends and relatives to help future students by dedicating the Memorial Student Center and the Memorial Fountain. The traditional heritage and dynamic changes make Marshall a growing and pro- gressive institution. After 150 years, the impact never fades.
