.StuAberdeen The man that made Marshall As an ail important part of student life at any university, sports continuously illustrates how the ticking away of time has dealt rough blows to Marshall University. Constant tragedies and turbu- ience keep the major sports building to their potential. As time passes, history repeats, and another sporting event has to be refurbished,- starting all over again. , 0 1969- Mid- American Confer- ence indefinitely suspends Mar- shall due to football and basket- ball recruiting irreguiarities. 0 1970-University in ycrisis. Seventy-five die in a: plane crash. Gone. are football play- ers, coaches, and fans. Marshall must start from scratch, search- ing for new coaches, new play- ers, and a new athletic director. Turmoil sets in at Marshall Uni- versity. - 1977-Bob Daniels, head basketball coach, resigns after anotherh dismal season. New hope is found when Stu Aber- deen is hired as a replacement. - 1978-Head Football Coach Frank Ellwood is fired, along with his entire coaching staff Once again Marshall athletics are in turmoil. 0 1979- Head Basketball Coach Stu Aberdeen dies While on vacation. The university and community feel a deep sense of loss for the man they admired and loved. Just when'things are looking up, time takes its toll. A man loved by all, about'tosee a dream-come-true in. the new Cam Henderson Center will nev- er see the team considered to be the best in the recruiting his- tory of Marshall. Sports reflect it. The cycles are continuous and somehow familiar. The pattern seen in sports is even more tragic and hopeless than the other patterns formed in the realm of the insti- tuition. Yet, the other m A, J L problems are there. Walking the sidelines, Stu could be seen up and en- thused about the game. At- ways on top of whats going on. He could get the fans aroused and keep them go- ing for the entire game. Fans of all ages and players loved him. Autographs were a big thing with Stu.
