,,,,,, xxxxx Marshall On the Move History repeats itself. Like the back and forth movement of the pendulum, moving over the same path day after day, year after year, so goes Marshall's history. Constant trouble lower- ing the morals of the college population to the point that it is wondered if Marshall can ever attain the status of its potential and pushing the university one step backward for every two for- ward. Positive changes have taken place. growth has occurred, but the tragic occurances are re- membered long after all else is forgotten. The early 70's see a new dorm with heating and plumbing problems. The dorm is Twin Towers and the late 70's find it no more enticing with its bursted pipes and unpopular food. Towers is not the only dorm with problems, however, as Laidley Hall continues to have electrical problems, while other schools have waiting lists for their dorms, consisting of sen- iors as well as freshmen, Mar- shall has trouble keeping people living on campus after the stu- dents have lived in thedorms the re- 4m quired two years. t t' x Taking a break from it all, Melissa Talman uses ice frozen by winter weather on the central field to practice ice skating. Melissa commented, Why don't they fix the field for the students like this in the winter. it's great.

.StuAberdeen The man that made Marshall As an ail important part of student life at any university, sports continuously illustrates how the ticking away of time has dealt rough blows to Marshall University. Constant tragedies and turbu- ience keep the major sports building to their potential. As time passes, history repeats, and another sporting event has to be refurbished,- starting all over again. , 0 1969- Mid- American Confer- ence indefinitely suspends Mar- shall due to football and basket- ball recruiting irreguiarities. 0 1970-University in ycrisis. Seventy-five die in a: plane crash. Gone. are football play- ers, coaches, and fans. Marshall must start from scratch, search- ing for new coaches, new play- ers, and a new athletic director. Turmoil sets in at Marshall Uni- versity. - 1977-Bob Daniels, head basketball coach, resigns after anotherh dismal season. New hope is found when Stu Aber- deen is hired as a replacement. - 1978-Head Football Coach Frank Ellwood is fired, along with his entire coaching staff Once again Marshall athletics are in turmoil. 0 1979- Head Basketball Coach Stu Aberdeen dies While on vacation. The university and community feel a deep sense of loss for the man they admired and loved. Just when'things are looking up, time takes its toll. A man loved by all, about'tosee a dream-come-true in. the new Cam Henderson Center will nev- er see the team considered to be the best in the recruiting his- tory of Marshall. Sports reflect it. The cycles are continuous and somehow familiar. The pattern seen in sports is even more tragic and hopeless than the other patterns formed in the realm of the insti- tuition. Yet, the other m A, J L problems are there. Walking the sidelines, Stu could be seen up and en- thused about the game. At- ways on top of whats going on. He could get the fans aroused and keep them go- ing for the entire game. Fans of all ages and players loved him. Autographs were a big thing with Stu.
