A tribute to Stewart H. Smith . . . For twenty-three years, Dr. Stewart H. Smith has been a part of Marshall University. From his arrival at Marshall as a Dean in 1945, and as president in 1947. he has come to represent—even to symbolize—the growth of Marshall. His years as president have been filled with many signs of material growth. Marshall College, a small college with three thousand students, has become Marshall University, with an enrollment approaching ten thousand and a widening influence as a major center of learning. During his tenure, a new library, a Science Hall, a Health and Physical Education Building, a Maintenance Building, a Music Hall, several new dormitories and the new Stewart H. Smith Hall were built. A new University Center, a Communications Building and the Twin-Towers dormitories and Dining Hall are either under construction or ready for construction. A new Science-Engineering Building is being planned. Academic programs have been enlarged and improved, and the main campus has been expanded by an addition of fifteen acres. University Heights campus has been acquired. President Smith looks at this growth with pride but feels that his greatest satisfaction has come from the people whom he has known in the long years at Marshall. 17 President Smith gives a warm greeting to a student in the hoi'. Dr. Smith has had a personal influence on the people he has met and worked with at Marshall. His quiet, friendly nature has gained him a respect from all who have known him, respect that is more real and deeper because it is given and not demanded. Many students can recall some impression of the President: a firm handshake, a friendly Hello in the halls of Old Main, a personal interview to iron out some problem. All come away a little altered, a little more aware of the legacy of the past and the treasure of the future. 18 Captain Fred Moore receives Ohio Valley Conference Championshio trophy for 1950 with President Smith's congratulations. 19 The Science Hall is one of the many buildings constructed while President Smith was at Marshall University. Durward Brewer and P'es'cont Smith preview the 1958 Chief Justice. After assembling at Johnson Memorial Church, President Smith !eads the graduation party to the Keith Albee Theater for commencement exercises. Basketball Captain Bob Redd and President Smith exchange a warm handshake. 20 President Smith attends 1967 pep rally. Now the time has come when the man who has guided Marshall University for twenty-three years will step down. President Smith has submitted his resignation effective July 31. He will have time for himself now, time to be with his family, time to travel. In this world of Heraclitean flux, things change, the old passes to make place for the new. Dr. Smith has served Marshall well for twenty-three years, but even the longest, most fruitful administration must eventually close. This is not the end, however. The continuity of Marshall University will remain, and President Smith's contributions will continue growing as Marshall University grows. While the spirit of Marshall lives, the spirit of Stewart Harold Smith v ill shape it, spreading its presence like a wave on the quiet surface of a pond. President Smith and injured Quar-terbaclc Howie Miller watch grimly as Bcwl-i n g Green beats Marshall — Homecoming 1965. 21 President and Mrs. Smith express their happiness at the dedication of Stewart Harold Smith Academic Center and the adjoining Evelyn Ho'lberg Smith Mjsic Hall. These bui'dings were dedicated on November II. 1967. in appreciation of Pres, and Mrs. Smith s devoted work at Marshall. 23 . . . bringing twenty-three years to a close. One is reminded of Christopher Wren's epitaph in St. Paul's Cathodral. Wren, the builder of the Cathedral, has on his tomb only the words si mon-umcntum requiris circumspice. If you need a monument, look around you. If anyone requires a monument to Dr. Smith, he may look around him. for Marshall University is truly a monument to President Smith. 24 25 learning 26 27 28 DR. A. MERVIN TYSON Vice Provident. This part of participation is not like any other because Greek life is more than a casual acquaintance. It is a brotherhood. A Greek has a desire to belong, and do something for the Greek world, tho university and the community. 89 90 Greek life can be related to a formal dance or to the gcod natured work of pledges. But within each group, every member contributes in some way to make the Greek system strong. 91 92 Pike s Peak 6 Again the Pi Kappa Alpha' ran away with th Groce Wool gam . The Student Artist series included Mantovani, Stan Kenton. Count Basie. Victor Borge, and the Serondipity Singers. Alan J. It is the year that President Johnson stepped down for the sate of unity. It is the year Martin Luther King was assassinated in a town torn by the struggle for human dignity. It is the year that sevoral West Virginia politicians were indicted for crimes that have been the plague of our state for years. It is the year that tho hope for a genuine peace in Vietnam began and the fear of turmoil in tho cities loomed even larger. Each individual is involved in the challenges of 1968—foreign policy. Black Power, the changing moral climate, turmoil in the cities. Every generation faces major challenges—the questions that have boon a part of society since its beginning. What is the role of the individual within society? What is the relationship between the sub-cultures of society and between different societies? What will be the moral structure that governs the actions of people? As each generation examines these questions, attempts to find answers develop—new approaches to the age old questions of human conduct. And with each new beginning we have new hopes. A hope that will find what no other generation has stumbled upon or discovered. During IMPACT Week, each one o; us will have an opportunity to examine these new beginnings through different viewpoints—faculty, national loaders, and the men who holp shape theso issuos—our guest speakers. More importantly, we must evaluate each issue within ourselves. For only then does IMPACT 1968 come alive. IMPACT 1968 Jim Slicer. Coordinator 223 224 South Hall has had a new lift this year. It is row four floors higher and twice its original size. It has the distinction of being the tallest building on campus. With the new addition came a sun deck, study rooms, carpeting, laundry facilities and an air-conditioned lounge. If anyone is interested visiting hours aro from one 'til four every Sunday afternoon. In reality South Hall is really two sep-ara e dorms with dividing doo'S that can be locked. Each half (east and west) houses 250 boys. This year South Hall had four informal and a Christmas party for all of the dorms on campus. Hodges Hall, the oldest men's dorm on campus, is now undergoing a period of complete renovation. When it is opened in September it will house 250 boys, and athletic ability will no longer be a residence requirement. Tho dorm will be remodeled ond have all new furni-turo. Before it was closed for ropair. Hcdgos Hall took an active interest in the campus social life. The men sponsored an informal, a picnic, and soveral of the guys took it upon themselves to spread the Christmas spirit. 227 West Hall is the newest women's dorm on campus. The girls in West have hod several parties and a semi-formal dance this year. They have also token part in Homecoming. Mother's Day Sing and Intramurels. Life in West Hall is full of excitement, including water battles, fire drills, and serenades. Prichard Hall, one of the older women's dorms, has always taken part in campus activities. This year the girls at Prichard had several dances and parties and experienced soveral attempted panty raids. At Christmas time the girls trimmed their own tree and went about campus caroling. 228 Laidley, the oldest women's dorm, is also being remodeled and enlarged. The girls in Laidley hove been very active this year. They took first place in tho Homecoming sign contest and participated actively in all intramurals. At Christmas time the residents had a formal at the Glenbrier Country Club. Throughout the year they have had several smaller partios, finishing up with a banquet for graduating seniors in the spring. 229 University Heights, an often-forgotten aspect of Marshall, serves os a home for student families. Located on Route 60 and Norway Avenue, the large pillared apartment complexes have served as homes for married students for a great many years. But to the graduating senior he will only remember that he got that long awaited sheepskin on May 26. 1968. A littlo nostalgia could be detected. Howovcr. it was only the crest on the wave of relief and excitement. Beforo the actual Commencement exercise Baccalaurate service was held on the lawn in front of the Student Union. Reverend Bert E. McCormick, a Marshall graduate, and a pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at New Castle. Pennsylvania, delivered the address. Alan S. Boyd. United States Secretary of Transportation, addressed the largest graduating class in Marsha'I history with IC9I degrees being conferred. In this history a great many honorary degrees have been presented and similarly the 1968 Commencement gave five such degrees to Chester A. Arents. Herbert K. Baer. Alan S. Boyd, Stewart H.
