When the Class of 1985 started school in the first grade most were excited about the new experience. Any apprehensions were soon forgotten as new friends were made and the world of knowledge was explored. By the time sixth grade arrived many began to wonder if the senior year would ever arrive. Grown-ups were envied because they didn't have to go to school. The long arriving graduation night began with the traditional strains of Pomp and Circumstance being played by the band. McNary gymnasium began to fill with red and white robed seniors who for one last time had gathered as a class. As the last diploma was handed out and the last tassel moved the doors of education at MHS would close. Even through the tears of joy and sadness most seniors realized that the piece of paper held in their hands would open doors to further education or to employment. In the not too distant future these some seniors who couldn't wait to get out of school may find themselves thinking as they see kids going off to school that it would be great to be a kid again. Thanks moml Darren Thompson lets his emotions rake over as he received a hug. For twelve years you get this. Richie Calhoun gladly accepts his diploma from school board president, Tom Murphy. With great expectations and high hopes the Lions baseball team began their 1985 season. However the team didn't live up to its expectations. The Lions fell short in their quest to hold on to the conference ti- tle they captured last year. Third place in the conference behind Casey and Kansas was the best the Lions could do. Overall the team posted an even 8-8 record. - The season was not without its strong Baseball Falls Short of Expectations points. Senior Scott Dawson was named the most valuable ployer. The shortstop hit .392 tied for the RBI lead with 16, and led in stolen bases with 11. Troy Thorp led the team with three homers, tied Dawson and Greg Fields for RBI honors. Scott Sherrill end- ed the seoson with a .326 batting average and 11 RBI's. Sherrill was later nomed to the LIC all-conference teom. The program is designed as a program with the first year of the program designed as an in- to health-related occupations. iAlso taught are medical terms, history of medicine andthe history of disease. The second-year students will participate in a one period work setting where they will learn to check vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respira- tion. They will also learn the care of medical equipment, how to do lab tests, Fields of Medicine and denistry skills. All of these areas are designed to provide a student with oppor- tunities for a career in the health care field. Students have had a chance to see what medical careers are avilable to them by visiting professionals at work and by listening to speakers who have visited the classroom. During the school year students visited such places as Methodist Hospital in indianapolis, Union Hospital in Terre Haute, the Family Practice Center, and the Mid- way Institution for Handicapped Children. The addition of the program meant the hiring ofa new staff member who was cer- tified as a medical professional not as a teacher. Although Mrs. Caroline Wilson is the teacher of the Health Occupations class she does not have to possess on illinois teacher certificate. My duty as a Health Occupations teacher, says Mrs. Wilson, is to expose a student to the field he or she is interested in and to provide him or her with information concerning the educa- tional requirements and the colleges where they might obtain this sort of training. ln concluding, Mrs. Wilson says, We started out small, but with student en- thusiasm and more exposure to the pro- gram, hopefully we'Il grow. 1 iq' Health Occupations iironrl Lee Ann Nove, Angela Scholburg, and Tammy See Cbackb Chris Lake Joseph Benner, Mrssi Wilson Mrs Carolyn Wilson and lisa Osborne .ff l ' -1 + ,L ' vt l s Q . ,- xiii, .. . New Designs ,,,, Appear rn 1985 Marshallonran Designs of MHS '85 was chosen as the theme for the 1985 Marshallonian to repre- sent the different functions and workings that occur within the walls of the high school building. The designs of a student's life are in- fluenced greotly by the designs of the world in which we live. It is through the designs of the school life of a MHS student that the 1985 yearbook has been patterned. The physical design of the book has been influenced by popular designs in advertisements and magazinesg the use of grid lines. The influence of the grid is one that every staff member becomes familiar with since each page of the yearbook is grown on a grid pattern. Planning for the yearbook began in early June 1984 when company representative, Paulo Keith organized a trip to Dallas, Texas for a year- book workshop. Further plonning was com- pleted by co-editors Joseph Bennet and Michelle Burkybile as the school yeor began. All staff members participated in a workshop during late September that stressed layout fundamentals and copy writing. Throughout the 144 pages the yeorbook staff has hopeful- ly created o design that will be remembered by all who take a look at Designs of MHS '85, Two heads are better than one. Co-editors Michelle Burkybile and Joseph Bennet worked together to effec- tively leod the 1985 yearbook staff. Are these layouts really necessary? Staff members lee Ann Nave, Kris Lindley, and Joseph Benner debate which Ioyout is best at the staff workshop held at Richards Form in Casey.
