This year the accent in the English Department has been on communica- tion skills - concentrated listening, effective speaking, and clear concise writing. The classic and contemporary literature of our own country and of the world as presented in our English classes deepened the understanding of individuals and nations. English Seated: Lulu Bartholomew, Mrs. Kay Saunders, Mrs. Charney Berger, Toby Susswein, Mrs. Alice Earl, Grace Leader. Standing: Mrs. Ann Brown, Mary C. Foley Head, Mrs. Io-Ann Averill, David Wood, Mrs. Mary Murphy, Earl Lammel, Mrs. lane Iones. Not in Picture: Ethel Dunn. Catherine Sheehan, Never in the history of mankind have a knowledge of our heritage and an understanding of the duties and respon- sibilities of both government and citi- zens been so important. There has been renewed emphasis on the interpretation of today's problems through the class work in government, geography, and historical background. Languages Seated: Florence Chittenden, Donald Clark Head, Agnes Powers. Standing: Frank Leach. Mathematics has been taught in rigorous manner and in logical order. Regular classes have worked with vim and vigor. Remedial help has been given where needed. For the most capable students there has been ad- vanced study of calculus. With a Hshrinkingn world, the im- portance of a foreign language has brought renewed interest in studying a language throughout the entire high school course so that a student may speak fluently and understand other nations.
