'Ps-1, ' W24.. Through the centuries, the pattern of life has been sym- bolized in the beauty of the fine arts. Musicians, artists, dancers, authors, and poets have all attempted to express their feelings about life through their different media. Long- fellow, too, was caught by this desire, and in his 'Psalm of Life, told of life's pattern. At Iohn Marshall, a spirit prevails which instills in our hearts and minds the desire to achieve, to work to the best of our abilities. Each student tries to leave behind him the best possible record of his life at Iohn Marshall, remembering Longfellovxfs words: Act,-Act in the living present! Heart within and God o'erhead. ' We invite you, now, to turn the page, and examine with us this book, the record of our never-to-be-forgotten life at Iohn Marshall High School. x1-4 1 I s. 3. . 'NNN CF Gin the Qillass uf 1959: As Longfellow so aptly set forth in his poem, A PSALM OF LIFE Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime And departing leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time, As you have lived your high school days, have you, the Seniors of Iohn Marshall High School, ever paused to reflect how great a debt you owe to the graduates of our school? Those former students strove for scholastic excellence, helped create the spirit of loyalty to our school, and by their thoughts and actions built traditions you now enjoy. The motto of many of them, as they tried to make each day count, must have been Life is reall Life is earnest! Now, as you join the alumni after your graduation in Iune, you can feel that your obligations have been fulfilled since you have continued and strengthened our traditions, thus enabling those who follow to bring honor and fame to themselves and to Iohn Marshall High School. Community Service Marshall was well represented on the Rochester Iunior Safety Council this year. Representatives were seniors David Mitchell and Carolyn Kelly and juniors Sandra Mingus and William Stegeman. Through their attendance at meetings and confer- ences, these students were able to promote success- fully safety at Marshall and throughout Rochester, Iunior Red Cross activities are always important in our school year. This year these activities were led by nine students appointed from all grade levels. Serving on the Iunior Red Cross lnter-High Council, these students highlighted their work with an en- rollment and fund-raising campaign held in March. This year Marshall's delegates to the Iunior Coun- cil of the Rochester Association of the United Nations were Elizabeth Ty- ler and Alan Robinson. A survey test on the United Nations and a mock Security Council meeting were only two of the many activities in which Marshall was able to participate as a result of the fine work of our delegates. These students, under the direction of Mr. Thomas Vetter, donate their time to patrol the halls before school in the morn- ing, to keep the cafeteria in order during the lunch periods, and to direct trafic throughout the school. Mr. E. Hoff- man, the club adviser, and the elected officers. Dave Wallace, Bob Goellner, Dick Smith, and Larry Davis, have worked to make this new club a success. Members of the Beta Hi-Y club painted the lines in the school parking lot, participated in various school and community service projects, and helped in the formation of Alpha. Both clubs worked in presenting a semi-formal dance. They have taken an active part in the Youth in Government assemblies and entered the Hi-Y basketball tournament. Marshall , 15 Edison ,, 24 Marshall 29 Iefferson 14 77 rf Bob Higham VARSITY Baseball Through the fine pitching efforts of All-Scholastic Ron Spring, last year's baseball team captured the city and sectional championships, Ron broke the records for the most strike-outs, earned runs, and walks in one season previously held by Bob Keegan and Iohnny Antionelli. I-le also signed a contract to play with the Pittsburgh Pirates, a major league team. The Marshall team had three tough games which they won last season. Two games were 1-0 victories battled out by the pitchers from Charlotte and Corning Northside against Ron Spring. The other was an eight-inning affair against West, which was won by a home-run in the bottom of the eighth. With the hard work of all the other boys coached by Bill Bushnell, the team had an undefeated season of twelve wins and no losses. Larry Heffer, Bob Higham, and Al Iardine were also All-Scholastic choices and provided much of the power hitting for the team. This team has given Marshall the best baseball record ever achieved by any baseball team in the school. First Row: N. Weld, S. Bender, E. Brown. R. Statuiki, M. Speciale. R, Hig- ham, I. Biehler.
