Living in a democracy in today’s world demands a knowledge of our heritage and an appreciation of the duties, responsibilities, and obligations as well as the rights of democratic citizenship. To achieve this goal of active and effective citizenship the department draws upon the resources of history, economics, government, geography, and sociology. English Today the interest in television and drama has made everyone aware of the importance of English, both as a skill to be used in listening, speaking, and writing, and for the understanding of people through the great literature of today and yesterday. In this department too, the classic grammatical skills are taught and pupils learn to think and organize their thoughts through the preparation of com¬ positions, outlines, and oral reports.
