Our future lies before us in a wide path of hope and opportunity. Tomorrow is a broad avenue to success for those who accept its challenge. Yet, it is not an awesome threat we face in the future, for our education has prepared us to enrich our lives and face life’s problems. To¬ morrow, a wealth of knowledge will be our constant companion. Human experience will be our able assistant. We will build tomorrow from the lessons of today — a noble heritage. It will be a glorious enterprise to follow the aims and goals our leaders have set for us. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow equal our destiny. ' Our todays and yesterdays are the blocks with which we build ' 4 dedication t 0 the moulders of our youth, to the directors of destiny — to the faculty of John Marshall High School we dedicate this book. Honestly have they led us in the path¬ ways of truth and knowledge. Clearly have they imparted the wisdom obtained from years of experience. Great has been their toil. Small has been their material reward. Yet, we will always remember their work. Their influence will affect the future. To our teachers we humbly dedicate this 1958 John Quill. classwork page 11 seniors page 19 activities page 47 sports page 69 blocks with which we build 6 Education today is recognized as an essential safeguard to our democratic way of life. While we cherish the rights of the individual, we must remember that for every right guaranteed to us there is a corresponding responsibility. In your world of today the underlying foundation upon which you can build success is an undying faith in the moral and spiritual ideals of America. Success both for the individual and for the community in which he lives depends upon an ability to understand oneself, to get along with people, to be economically independent, and to assume civic responsibility. You have been prepared to understand the significance of these guides of living, to accept them and to make them part of your developing personality. In your world of tomorrow, living according to these percepts should bring many, many satisfactions. education for today... 7 LEON C. Living in a democracy in today’s world demands a knowledge of our heritage and an appreciation of the duties, responsibilities, and obligations as well as the rights of democratic citizenship. To achieve this goal of active and effective citizenship the department draws upon the resources of history, economics, government, geography, and sociology. English Today the interest in television and drama has made everyone aware of the importance of English, both as a skill to be used in listening, speaking, and writing, and for the understanding of people through the great literature of today and yesterday. In this department too, the classic grammatical skills are taught and pupils learn to think and organize their thoughts through the preparation of com¬ positions, outlines, and oral reports. Another phase of classwork centered around learning about foreign customs and modes of living, for a better understanding of the world we live in. Business Standing: Barbara Foos, Raymond W. Wright, Agnes Herrick, Helen M. Lathrop, Laura H. Colahan, Clay¬ ton M. DeLong. Seated: David B. Brady. More than 500 pupils were enrolled in the Business Department this year. Equipment such as dictaphones, calculating machines, and duplicating machines were used to acquaint the students with devices found in an actual office. Automation and how it affects the Business Education Department was also studied. 14 Mathematics Borden C. Booth, Edith B. Olihstead, Charles W. Pflaum, Monroe I. Lord. Jean Pennoyer. Thomas Byrnes, Paul T. Epping. Missing: Joseph H. Con¬ roy. The Mathematics Department, under the direction of Mr. Pflaum, sought to teach the students not only the subject matter, but to develop in the students an individual thought process for clearer and more self-reliant reasoning. The courses offered included eighth and ninth grade math, plane and solid geometry, elementary, intermediate, and advanced alge¬ bra, trigonometry, and a new course, 11th grade mathematics, which combined inter¬ mediate algebra and trigonometry. The national need for scientists and en¬ gineers was stressed in the Science Depart¬ ment this year under the direction of Mr. Houseman. Teachers encouraged students with outstanding abilities in these fields to enter them. In an attempt to create more interest, special after school programs were given, and trips were made to industries in our community to see the scientist in action. Standing: Dorothy H. Corbett. Bands and Orchestra “A Workout ” The school year 1957-’58 brought many changes to the instru¬ mental department of John Marshall High School, under the direction of Mr. Roy Thrall. The most significant change was the establishment of a new organization, the Wind Ensemble, This group was composed of forty-eight of the most select musicians and because of its small size, was able to play a more difficult and varied selection of music. The Wind Ensemble was the only group in Rochester to be selected to play for the annual New York State School Music Association Con¬ vention in the Eastman Theater on December sixth. The other organizations under the instrumental department were the Red Band, formerly called the Junior Band; the Blue Band, for¬ merly called the Senior Band; the Junior Orchestra; and the Senior Orchestra. Each group elected its own officers dnd student conductor and participated in the New York Music Association festival held at Ithaca during mid May, 62 Bookstore Mr. DeLong. V. Rosentreter, R.
