We will carry, on Social Studies The Social Studies Department under- took to create in the students an understand- ing of world problems through the study of American and world history, economics, and problems of democracy. The social studies I course gave the freshmen an understanding of the local, state, and federal governments, a basic prerequisite for good American citi- zens. English English, the basic subject in the high school curriculum, included such electives as Radio and Dramatics. The study of ling- lish was three-fold: the development of communication skills through training in speaking and writing and the interpretation of ideas through reading and literature, plus training in the art of listening. New record- ings, tape-recordings, and motion pictures of literary works all added to the interest of these classes. Mathematics This year the mathematics department under the direction of Mr. Pflaum aimed not only to teach the subject matter but to train the pupils in the art of clear thinking. The courses offered included eighth and ninth grade math, plane and solid geometry, elementary, intermediate, and advanced al- gebra, and trigonometry.
