The social studies I course gave the freshmen an understanding of the local, state, and federal governments, a basic prerequisite for good American citi- zens. English English, the basic subject in the high school curriculum, included such electives as Radio and Dramatics. The study of ling- lish was three-fold: the development of communication skills through training in speaking and writing and the interpretation of ideas through reading and literature, plus training in the art of listening. New record- ings, tape-recordings, and motion pictures of literary works all added to the interest of these classes. Mathematics This year the mathematics department under the direction of Mr. Pflaum aimed not only to teach the subject matter but to train the pupils in the art of clear thinking. The courses offered included eighth and ninth grade math, plane and solid geometry, elementary, intermediate, and advanced al- gebra, and trigonometry. The aim of the art department this p21St o llte end. Language Marie Therese Godet, teenage diplomat from Tours, France, completely tape-record- ed two text hooks used in the French classes, for better comprehension in French. America Cortes, student from Panama, did similar work in Spanish. Because of the marked increase in regi- stration in I.atin this year, Mr. Leach was transferred to the Foreign Language Depart- ment. Fine Arts year was self-expression through different media such as French water color, splash painting, sponge painting, and oil. Much of the work went into posters for special school events and the annual Scholastic Art Exhibit. ln the music department this year the Marshall Music Masters were reorganized and a new wood ensemble was formed. The wood ensemble consisting of thirty- nine members was primarily formed for listening pleasure while the Music Masters, which had fifteen members, played for school dances. Business Many students were provided with prac- tical business knowledge through the vo- cational subjects offered by our Business Department. Some of the job opportunities made available by this training were typ- ist, stenographer, secretary, retail salesman, clerks, junior bookkeepers, and countless others. A special course offered for one se- mester, was Typing Special. In this course college preparatory students were able to obtain the fundamentals of typing. Jr! We wanl more Practical Arts The Practical Art Department this year consisted of classes in mechanical drawing, metals, woodworking, craft, and home eco- nomics. These classes were designed to show CLOTHING pupils the correct methods concerning the use and care of modern machines. The pupils were taught how to work with one another and to coordinate their hands and mind in solving problems confronting them in every- day life. Students enrolled in the home economics classes were taught intelligent buying, good family relations, and kitchen practices. M ETA LS SHOP Science This year in our Science Department, survey tests were given to ninth grade students to discover achievement in the biological and earth sciences, as well as to discover special observations and reasoning skills. A new course, Life Science, was introduced into the curriculum and a special attempt was made to interest pupils in entering a career in science or engineering, in order to relieve the crit- ical shortage in these fields. Inspection trips were made by interested students to three industries near our school to see the scientist at work on his home ground. 18 1 ' m T ..-1: 'f. -M ' ,wif . v x Ml s ff M . 1 ' f 4 .EI - ,t nk' is A 4 es , N' -Q N J' X W' U fir M1 S Nmx' A' 52 N 5 Ji' .gn x A xg WR '9'v 'Fl A 1. . .Q ' . r .,- 3 4.1 l,,,,.. ......l.,,L 'A Vw ff 4.
