Heads turn this way and that way to take in the whole performance. So much is going on that you become confused, but you are having a wonderful time just the same. And so it can be with life as you are living it now-right here at .lohn Marshall High School-the excitement, the commotion, the activity! But with this difference-YOU are putting on the show. Will it be a good one? The perfection achieved in a circus performance is the result of years of painstaking preparation on the part of all the actors. What about the role you will play in life when your turn is called! Will you be ready? The role that each of you will play will be different-not everyone can be a clown, a bareback rider, or an acrobat. The performance would be dull if everyone did the same thing. Perfection is reached in life, as in the circus, when each performer is doing that at which he is best prepared and in tune with the whole show. You've put in many years of hard work and study getting ready for the show. Soon the calliope will begin to play-the show will go on-no matter what happens. Are you ready with your act? ADVISER Jessie Barry 9 5 7 41929 1 U 0 Bug D WR' 95 Duo Leon Friel XJ U Dua x um 05 Ann Turula Every circus has its ringmasters-Marshall is no exception. By guiding the interests and-abilities of every student, by helping them to solve their personal problems, and by discovering hidden talent, the advisers have directed the students to give a finished performance. Their many tasks have been handled capably-always with a smile of understanding. 8 Alfred Goetz Joseph Ulrich ESiXXvQ N 'iwlxk A X , fxif, Wgxfjjff X X XX . vjx jk! ixl R L -'kfL , ' , I 5 l P1 T' QS 5 4 Q iV px , O N 4 , ' it Q D l nf? Problems which baffled the alchemists were mastered in chemistry classesg Einstein's equation of relativity helped in physics classesg and actual, preserved specimens gave biology students a clearer understanding of this science. Continuous BUSINESS In the field of business training, many students took the opportunity to learn shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, office practice, and business law. A co-operative plan gave seniors the chance to apply their knowledge through training on the job, and commercial students also served as secretaries and messengers for faculty mem- bers to gain further secretarial experience. 14 MATHEMATICS Higher mathematics such as solid geometry, advanced algebra, and trigonometry, along with general elementary math, intermediate algebra, and plane geometry were oHered to students interested in this field of study. This training was given as an invaluable aide in any occupation, and under the expert guidance of our math teachers. the students were versed in the fundamentals. Performances HISTORY This year the social studies department was primarily concerned with teaching good citizenship which included social understanding and effective participation in a democratic society. It was realized by the corps of students that democracy as a way of life cannot be passed on from generation to generation simply by inheritance, without losing some of its vitality, The faculty tried in this branch to achieve its goal, by drawing upon the resources of history, government, geography, economics. and sociology. I5 Librarians B. Grinnell, K. Uderitz When a quiet place was needed in which students could study, the library, under the guidance of Miss Grinnell and her capable assistants, was the place to which students often turned. Whether the student was interested in doing re- search work or in reading for personal enjoyment, he found the shelves filled with the best books in every field. Bemish, L. Foster, M. Kolesnick, I. Burgdorf, D. Stahley, C. Fortune, M. Burdick. Every circus has its 'roust-a-bouts and medical staff, and our super menagerie is no exception. Our custodians, whose job it was to prepare our school for social events, to keep the building and grounds in good condition, and to maintain a warm and comfortable building, served us well during the past year. The lunchroom staff prepared excellent meals to whet the appetites of Marshall's performers. They also pre- pared tempting delicacies for many of Marshall's social events. The rating committee, with Ruth VanLare and Robert Ihrig as student chairman, and Mrs. Olmstead as the faculty adviser, was successful in the determination of in- dividual ratings. Each homeroom rating clerk computed the rating of each student in his homeroom and handed in the report to the central committee. Behind the Scenes Each Monday morning the elected bank clerk of each homeroom busily col- lected the money from thrifty students. This year a new program simplified banking for the clerk as well as the students. By this new system each banking student was provided with his own envelope into which the money and banking slip were placed. BANKING CLERKS C First Row: J. Trapani, M. Bianchi, D. Fuchs, J. This, the purpose of all Hi-Y's throughout the United States, serves as a basis for planning the activities of Hi-Y clubs. In addition to the business meetings of every social organization, the Hi-Y program consists of service projects, such as doing vol- unteer work at the Y M C A, showing pictures at the Home for the Aged and giving aid to the needy, educational programs such as important speakers, field trips to places of interest and problem discussion periods, and social meetings, such as bowling parties. dances and holiday parties. This society is not only a part of ,lohn Marshall but reaches out as a great sisterhood all over the world. It was not long before members found themselves on committees to plan such social events as Hi-Y - Tri-Y dances, spaghetti suppers, Christmas caroling, and splash parties. O The 1953 edition of the Marshall soccer team, under the able eye of coach Anthony Gerace, booted its way to Marshallis third con- secutive city and section V championship. The Jurists found little competition in the inter- scholastic league circuit as they extended their win skein to 29 straight. Leading the scoring for the second year in a row was Don Spieler, who blasted 39 points through the enemy uprights. The team itself garnered 134- points to the opposition's 11. This is believed by many to be a national record. Guarding the nets for the pitchmen was a trio of goalkeepers consisting of Ed Caress, Walt Kleinhenz and Werner Preissing. A definite factor in the team's success was a teen-age dip- lomat by the name of Gigi Melega who played a brand of soccer which is seldom seen in inter- scholastic circles. A After conquering all eight of the city high schools, the Orange and Blue pitchmen swept aside Spencerport in a decisive 12 to 1 victory tiff wi i' CCER in the opening game of the Section V soccer tournament. In the final fray the Marshall men dropped the visitors from Hornell by a score of 6 to 3 to capture the sectional crown. SOCCER SCORES Marshall ........ 19 Charlotte . . Although Marshall lost its entire team from last year, this year's team, former reserve league champions, displayed good teamwork and the abil- ity to come back after a poor start. In the first half of season play, the hoopsters were unable to record a single win. In the second half of the campaign, however, they picked up two wins and lost some close heartbreakers. High single game scoring honors went to Bill Schaeffer who recorded 20 points in one game. He also holds the highest total for the season with 181 points, averaging 10.2 per game. Bill Reeves was second highest with 135 points followed by Don Axon, Dick Holz- schuh, Don Spieler and Bruce Sullivan. The final record gave the boys two wins against 14 losses in league competition. With the Greatest of Ease After twelve years and one hundred and four- teen consecutive victories, the record of the Mar- shall swimming team was finally broken. While trying for their one hundred and fiftieth win against a favored Franklin team, the finmen suf- fered defeat. The meet was close and it was not until the last race, the 200 yard relay, that the outcome was decided. Franklin won that race and put an end to a great record. The swimmers, led by co-captains Ron Waytalak and Bill Caprio, went through the remainder of the season undefeated. Special honors go to Ron Waytalak for setting a city record in the 100 yard backstroke. Pool rec- ords were broken by Bill Caprio in the 100 yard freestyle and by Gordon Jewett in the individual medley. Ken Mansfield, DeWitt Kirchmaier, Dick Davis, Bill DuBiel, Gordon French, Chuck Farrell, Roger Rhoades and Norm Files were other con- assistent winners. The Jurists, led by Bill Caprio, who won both the 100 yeard freestyle and the 100 yard breast- stroke, Roger Rhoades who won the 200 yard free- style, and Ron Waytalak, who set a new record in winning the 100 yard hackstroke, successfully de- dended their sectional title for the 19th straight year.
