Many students chose to take the courses of the science c E M I S T R Y department-a department that emphasized the laboratory method and attempted to provide each student with the diamond tool of the scientific method. Pvc a Right to Think , Said Alice Business-minded students focused their talents on the third Hoorg here typing, shorthand, book- keeping, business law, and ofhce practice took the spotlight. Those who proved successful along this line took the co-op course in which they gained experience through on-the-job training. R E A D I N G The study of classic and modern literature plus the use of motion pictures, film strips, tape recordings, records, and radio broadcasts brought meaning and enjoyment to the study of English. Two classes in remedial reading were formed to improve the comprehension and speed of reading. nrmnmng Again Everywhere we turn today we see the use of mathematics, from designing nut- crackers to splitting the atom. Students wishing to learn of this foundation stone of civilization were oilered courses ranging from arithmetic to the rigors of elementary calculus and solid geometry. 4:21 MATHEMATICS

ART Thus Grew the Tale ART ' LANGUAGE ' HISTURY Some students preferred the brush to the pen for self-expression. The Art department provided opportunities for the pupils to learn form, color, and composition to guide their inspiration. History was being made so rapidly in all parts of the world during this past year that the Social Studies department devoted con- siderable time to the current scene. Current events together with the history of the past prepared students to choose satisfactorily between alternative courses of future action. French, Latin, and Spanish were included in the curriculum this year, offering many opportunities for students to study a foreign language. The newly devised system of teach- ing Spanish through the use of records was introduced and students were able to hear the text of their newly acquired books spoken verbatim by a Spaniard. LATIN 18
