Y . s ...QQE E V i I The Wonders of Uur Wonderland A little less than one hundred years ago an English school teacher who called himself Lewis Carroll began to spin tales of a wonderland to little Alice Liddell. The enchanting nonsense seen by Alice through the looking glass was no less fantastic than the change from the school of Lewis Carroll's day to the wonders of our present John Marshall High School. Have you ever thought of these wonders in this modern school? HERE you are privileged to select from a wide scope of offerings the subjects which appeal to your interests and meet your needs. HERE you prepare yourselves to assume the duties, responsibilities, and privileges of citizenship in our community. HERE you are provided with equipment worth 8150,000 to make learning more fascinating. HERE you have the services of many well-trained teachers who are interested in you as individuals. HERE you have the assistance of sympathetic and understanding men and women to guide and counsel with you. HERE you have the opportunity for enrichment and self-expression through music, art, and dramatics. HERE you can have good fellowship in the varied activities designed to help make your leisure time more enjoyable. HERE the loveliness of the main foyer casts its influence upon you at the beginning of each school day. Are these fantastic or imaginary wonders? No - they are real wonders in your own wonderland, John Marshall High School. ELMER W. SN YDER Principal 3 'S 'W 'N xf X, if ff 'X f ,A .,xsr 'zf k.,k K 1,25 , i s if ' r P .. Mx -42, S Lewis CARROLL fi if it ff' With these few strokes of the pen Lewis Carroll transported his character, Alice, from her mid-Victorian parlour into a fantastic world of make-believe. This book finds itself confronted with a more difficult task: to transport the reader, represented by Alice, or her companion, the Mad Hatter, into the world of Marshall, a world composed of learnings and skill. Here Alice, typifying the modern student, will learn more than the three R's of her day, as she comes to know the principles that have made our nation great. She will learn ideals that will be the guides from uncertainty and failure to certainty and success. At last, when she has passed through these halls and stands at the threshold of life on commencement day, she will realize that wonderland does not lie behind golden doors or looking glasses, but consists of the rich experiences of a full life. 4 r i MT h,ou ,.. H., L.,.,..,,., G.,,,,, is lg sims iii W qWe, the Class of 1952, dedicate the John Quill to the students of the past, the present, and the future - to those of the past for their lessons, their failures, and their triumphs by which we have profited., to those of the present for the courage with which they face a troubled worldg and to those of the future for their promise of building a new. world with a chance for a better life. Now we invite you, our readers, to step like Alice through Lewis Carroll's magical looki ass nto our own wonderland, Marshall High. Two classes in remedial reading were formed to improve the comprehension and speed of reading. nrmnmng Again Everywhere we turn today we see the use of mathematics, from designing nut- crackers to splitting the atom. Students wishing to learn of this foundation stone of civilization were oilered courses ranging from arithmetic to the rigors of elementary calculus and solid geometry. 4:21 MATHEMATICS Many students chose to take the courses of the science c E M I S T R Y department-a department that emphasized the laboratory method and attempted to provide each student with the diamond tool of the scientific method. Pvc a Right to Think , Said Alice Business-minded students focused their talents on the third Hoorg here typing, shorthand, book- keeping, business law, and ofhce practice took the spotlight. Those who proved successful along this line took the co-op course in which they gained experience through on-the-job training. Office practice classes had some play along their work and held a party during the term. 0FFIOE PRACTICE ART Thus Grew the Tale ART ' LANGUAGE ' HISTURY Some students preferred the brush to the pen for self-expression. The Art department provided opportunities for the pupils to learn form, color, and composition to guide their inspiration. History was being made so rapidly in all parts of the world during this past year that the Social Studies department devoted con- siderable time to the current scene. Current events together with the history of the past prepared students to choose satisfactorily between alternative courses of future action. French, Latin, and Spanish were included in the curriculum this year, offering many opportunities for students to study a foreign language. The newly devised system of teach- ing Spanish through the use of records was introduced and students were able to hear the text of their newly acquired books spoken verbatim by a Spaniard. LATIN 18 MISS CI-IITTENDEN and MISS CRINNELI, Librarians of Wonderland The main oflice, in the care of Miss Jardine, Mrs. Cutaker, and Mrs. Uderitz, served the faculty and students of John Marshall efliciently and also handled school business capably. The nurse, Miss Heany, ad- ministered patient care to students who needed her aid. The sanctuary of a silent library was provided by the librarians .un- der the care of Miss Grinnell. The Executive Council consisted of the Students Association officers: president, Joe Viola, vice president, Lyle Ingerickg secretary, Barbara Bierworthg treasurer, Karen Jensen, the senior class president, the commissioners of several other groups, and class representatives. These stu- dents planned and carried out many worthwhile and successful projects this year. Among these projects were the two Student Association assemblies, four dances fhighlighted by the annual SnowballJ, an Eighth and Ninth Grade mixer, a Junior-Senior party, Career Day, and assemblies with professional speakers and entertainers. The Council also ran a campaign for ob- taining a motto for John Marshall. The Legislature, composed of a representative and alternate from each homeroom, contributed much-to the work of the school. Along with the Council, the Legislature amended the school con- stitution and adopted a code of conduct for the lunchroom. LEGISLATURE First Row: J. Jensen, A. Viola, C. Boyce, J. Ferner, W. J. NATIDNAL H0 OR SOCIETY The National Honor Society was organized by the Secondary School Principals of the United States to stimulate scholarship in the high schools of our country and to endeavor to place secondary education on a higher level. The John Marshall Chapter of the National Honor Society paid tribute to its members who attained recognition as well-rounded students excelling in scholarship, character, leadership, and service to the school. Eligible members, teachers and members of the Society rated the student's character and leadership qualities while activity and athletic credits determined the student's service to the school. The ratings listed in these four fold qualities netted the new candidates. After the selection of seniors in the fall and the few junior members in the spring an impressive candlelight induction ceremony was held before the student body in the auditorium. At the January reception of new members Roger Gridley and Nancy Harper were elected president and secretary respectively. Miss Mayo was the faculty adviser. 52 First Row: J. Meinhardt, E man, M. RATING CLERKS How Doth the Little Busy Bee? RATING AND BANK GLERKS If anyone walked into a homeroom the morning after report cards had been distributed. he would be sure to find the homeroom rating clerk busily checking the rating slips. The slips were re-checked by a chairman of each grade level and were then recorded in the office. Bank Clerks collected money from the thrifty students at J. M. H. S. This year's Class worked on enunciation in order to improve their speech, They also learned some of the stage technics essential to everyone. The students read several plays in class, and learned the basic fundamentals of pantomine and make-up. This course was not only worthwhile, but a source of enjoyment. Four teams were formed and the girls played against one another in competition. The two championship teams battled for top honors in a series of hard fought games. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball club, with Mrs. Holcombe as instructor, beat all other volleyball teams in the city. The girls practiced in club and worked hard to perfect their techniques. Good sportsmanship and teamwork played an important part in helping them to win the city title. SOCCER Newly introduced, soccer became a real hit with the girls. Although it took time to become familiar with the rules and regulations of the game, it rapidly progressed in popularity. The girls played on a specially marked field and showed ex- cellent signs of teamwork and sportsmanship. . S. Foster, J. Dean. BOWLING CLUB 68 Standing: R. Chennell, S. Stein, S. Van Atta, R. The teayrn, coached by Mr. Cerace, compiled a record of 10 wins and no losses. T . This yearfs team was a surprise because of the many regulars lost from last year's team. These positions were filled extremely well by such players as Ken Mansfield, Don Speiler, Bill Bartling, Ed Ingerick, Bill Crown, and Lyle lngerick, all of whom were reserves in last year's team. Also contributing much to the team's fine showing was the addition of Paul Bonnet, a transfer from Scottsville, and the playing of Chuck Weave1', a freshman. SOCCER SUMMARY Marshall . The Lion and the Unicorn Were Fighting for the Crown BASKETBALL MARSHALL FINALLY DID IT! For the first time in the sports history of John Marshall, the basketball team, mentored by Coach Bushnell, won the section five Class AA Championship by squelching Madison by a score of 41 to 40. One of the best quints ever produced at I.M.H.S., the squad had a league record of fourteen wins against four losses. These losses were heartbreaking because each game lost was decided by the narrow margin of one or two points. The most evident factor for the excellent type of basketball displayed was the marked improve- ment of Dyno Evgenides. Don Bentley, Dave Simpson, Ken Rhoades, and Len DeFrancesco. Dyno Evgenides developed into the most improved player on the team. His ball hawking and clutch scoring contributed much to the team's drive to second place and a berth in the sectionals. Dave Simpson started slow in the first half. but finished in a blaze of glory, setting the school's individual scoring record, by dunking in 33 points against Edison. Don Bentley, although plagued by sickness and injuries, developed into a scoring threat and was the team's top defensive man, drawing the assignment of guarding the opposing team's highest scorer. Ken Rhoades fitted well into the brand of ball played, adapting himself into a successful set-shot artist, as well as having a deadly jump shot from around the foul line. Len DeFrancesco, All Scholastic choice for the second straight year, showed again the reason he was chosen, as he led the Marshall scorers with 226 points. When he wasn't scoring he was pass- ing, checking, and playing an all around floor game. Along with Lenny, Dave Simpson and Ken Rhoades both landed a berth on the All Scholastic second team and Dyno Evgenides and Don Bentley were among the honorable mention players. Continuing on its winning ways in the season of 1951-52 was the John Marshall swimming team under the excellent coaching of Mr. Championship Gerace. The team, led by Co-captains Ronnie Waytalak and Pete Schaertel, splashed its way past all opponents with ease except Frankling when the meet was decided in the last race. Through graduation the team will lose Pete Schaertel, Dave Stoll, Pete Hammar, Jerry Laurer, Ron Diamond, Don Carleton, Jerry Collyer, and Dave Dixon. This year Marshall became co-owner of the 100 yard backstroke city record when Ron Waytalack swam the distance in 1:06 to tie the record previously held by Edison Tech. In the Sectionals, the Marshallmen again came through, with Bill Caprio and Pete Schaertel breaking two more records. J. Lauer, P. Schaertel, Bill Caprio, R. Diamond. CROSS COUNTRY Does the One Thai Wins TRACK Under the watchful eye of Coach Davis, the track team captured three thirds and a second in their four triangular meets. This netted them seventh place in the Final league stand- ings. Outstanding for the squad was Paul Merholf, who garnered the city title in the 440 yd. dash, but was elim- inated in sectional competition. Other competing were Fred Eysvogel, Gerry Collyer, Joe Mazzeo. Bill Wing, and Bob Tobin. TENNIS The Orange and Blue tennis team, coached by Mr. Wright, finished the 1951 season second only to Monroe. They posted a fine record of 6 wins and 2 losses. In the city tournament Fred Tausch captured the singles cham- pionship while Dave Ferner and Richard Beals garnered the doubles' championship, thus giving to Marshall the two possible sectional berths. Both Fred and the doubles combination were eliminated in sectional play, how- ever. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team with Mr. Wright as mentor ended the scholastic season in seventh place. Mainstays of last year's squad were John Bennett, Richard Edgett, Anthony Form, Roger Dickenson, Ivan Toner, and Tom Schutte. Although none of the boys took honors in the sectionals at Hobart, they showed the usual fighting spirit which is characteristic of John Mar- shall. TRACK TEAM TENNIS TEAM l l First Row: P. Rslsed Rlice BASEBALL John Marshall's baseball team of 1951, under the skillful supervision of Coach Bushnell, wound up the season in a tie for second place, after posting an excellent record of six wins and two losses in league competition. Leading the squad in hitting was Len DeFrancesco with a terrific .458 seasonis average. Vying with Len for top honors were Norrie Trevor and Ralph Pica, each slugging out a fine .321 average. Not quite so outstanding at the plate, hut equally as important in the field were Ron Harter, Bob Morrison, Dave Simpson, Ozzie Tripp, and Frank Raforth. Handling the hurling duties for the Marshall men was Ed De Rycke, who came through with six victories as opposed to two defeats. Relief pitching roles were handled by Len DeFrancesco.
