Sb .Q ' - j iv- PHI lIIPllI.'5 ESS!-lI3E According to Thomas jefferson, it was necessary for all the people of the Republic to have a general education to enable every man to judge for himself what will secure or endanger his freedom. In the early days of our country, the little red school houses of the several states were considered to be the bulwark of the American Republic. The subjects taught in these little schools were reading writing and arithmetic. Compare these schools and subjects taught with the complex offerings of our modern high schools and their million-dollar plants, and you may come to have a greater understanding and appre- ciation of your own john Marshall High School. This growth of education parallels the growth of your country with its democratic form of government which emphasizes the importance of the individual. The broad training of all the people is still the corner- stone of the development of our Republic. We can safeguard this concept of individual freedom and respon- sibility by striving continually in this direction for, as jefferson said, No other sure foundation can be devised for the preservation of freedom and happiness. 5
