In the early days of our country, the little red school houses of the several states were considered to be the bulwark of the American Republic. The subjects taught in these little schools were reading writing and arithmetic. Compare these schools and subjects taught with the complex offerings of our modern high schools and their million-dollar plants, and you may come to have a greater understanding and appre- ciation of your own john Marshall High School. This growth of education parallels the growth of your country with its democratic form of government which emphasizes the importance of the individual. The broad training of all the people is still the corner- stone of the development of our Republic. We can safeguard this concept of individual freedom and respon- sibility by striving continually in this direction for, as jefferson said, No other sure foundation can be devised for the preservation of freedom and happiness. 5 MR' EPJEL MRS- BARRY MISS GLASGOW Miss TURULA MR' GOETZ llur Guides Tu The Belden Hule In the Little Red School House, the emphasis was placed almost completely on the three R's. As schools grew and life adjustment problems became more complicated, other letters became conspicuous in the school program: G for guidance, A for advice, C for counseling, P for planning. These five people strove to develop through these services the well balanced student. 6 I fb . 2 f WWA-ww.-1+ 2 f E f rv 1 mx E 1452 A 3 ! Xuhn QXQW' f- A 'AN I-NX.. 2 -x S'--X 27' 1322! ff if III. She gave herself unstintingly, her time, efforts, and friend- ship, desiring only to help the students to a better under- standing of life. In the boys and girls she had a limitless, unshakeable faith, more than they had in themselves. Thus she left a monument which will live as long as any of her students remember her smile of greeting, her words of advice, and her comments of reassurance. She has left us in body, but her spirit will always live. MISS G. ADELYN PAINE OFFICE STAFF-Miss R. Armstrong, Miss H. Rowe, Miss E. She was always prepared to apply first aid, to lend a helping hand to students at home, and to make doctor and dentist appoint- ments. MRS. H. Mr. Tennity and the rest of the staff could always be called upon to assist students in preparation for our social activities. Mr. deZafra, the faculty advisor, with the help of Ted Braley amd Tom Athanas made the Corps a smooth functioning organization. This year the Corps started a dawn patrol, under the guidance of Carol New- ton, designed to keep early arrivers out of the corridors. Many social events dotted the calendar of the Service Corps' members, the most important one being the autumn picnic. Congratulations to the Mar- shal1ites in the orange jackets for doing such a grand job this year. 64 uw 5 'Q ,.,. . i 1 Q , , f f . UV W VJ! W IT W W 3 If 5 'X W XX? S 3 ' 3 . ' ,M v V? The team, after winning five straight games, lost to Madison and East before closing out the season with a win over the booters from Charlotte. The game against Madison, the eventual champions, was a tight, hard-fought battle until the fourth quarter when a Madison player sent the ball past Lenny DeFrancesco into the Marshall nets to break the scoreless tie and sew up the game for Madison. The Orange and Blue were led in scoring by Whitey Mitchell, who had 15 points, Colin Williams, with 1 1 points, and Larry Gordon, who had 7 scores. In the net this year was Lenny DeFrancesco, while Herbie Galen and Norrie Trevor did outstanding jobs at the fullback posts. Last year's sectional champ, Lyle Ingerick, didn't fare quite so well this year as last, while another sectional champ, Whitey Mitchell, showed exceptional skill. All things considered, the season was good, with everyone doing his best at all times. BIJWLI G john Marshall's bowling team, made up of Tom Athanas, Bob Berg, Charles Dewey, Wil- liam Carpenter, and Al Holmes, saw many pins falling before them during the past season. In the second half they repeated the feat, including a memorable 9-5 win over Charlotte. They also tacked on two non-league victories over Albion. Throughout the schedule the Orange and Blue were led to their triumphs by Herb Galen and Lee Morton, who were rewarded for their efforts by election to the All-Scholastic first team. Tommy Gilzow, third man in Marshall Scoring, was awarded a second team berth while Lenny De- Francesco and Larry Gordon were given honorable mention. Connie Rowe and Dorothy McMillan were the top players on the team. Keen com- petition, faithful practice, and the co-operation of every girl helped to make this club a success. JOAN KNIGHTS BIBLS' BASKETBALL The winter sport which held the spot-light for girls this year was basketball. Under the excel- lent coaching of Mrs. Bakker, beginners learned the fundamentals of the game every Tuesday afternoon. Guided by Mrs. Holcombe, the advanced bas- ketball team learned and developed some new rules that have added to the game in the past few years. The Junior and Senior girls participated in the annual benefit game for the March of Dimes. The two teams played a close contest game ending in a 21-21 tie. A girls' basketball team traveled to Monroe where they defeated Madison 24-6 and Franklin 40-28. ,0. First Row: M. Stadt, R. Huughtling. Second Roux' e5.CY1Pn W. Bartling, R. Gardener, K.
