The thunderous chorus of Alma Mater, the wild cheers at a closely contested game, the gay greetings shouted across a hall, the unspoken hopes and fears and dreams- all are a part of my voice. These comprise the program that I broadcast to the world. But the most important words in my script, words that influence the lives of all who enter my doors, need not be spoken to be heard. They are the deep, silent currents of idealism-Freedom, Loyalty, Friendship. These unspoken words, however, have found their con- summate expression in the young people who died in the recent war to secure our heritage of freedom. For us who take their place remains a challenge to translate those words into every language of the earth, and to broadcast across the world the message of freedom and brotherhood. ff I ,V ff XX x x X xg, I KW TX fi, K X N X!-XX J X R ffck- ke li .1 1 1-1. K' awww IIEDIEATIU M E, the Class of 1949, dedicate this book to those fellow students whose l 0.000 voices are no longer heard in our program. To them we pledge our efforts to employ the symbol of our freedom, Radio, for the promotion of the ideals they learned and practiced among us, and of the peace they died for. We hope that Radio may prove an instrument of enlightenment to the world, uniting all peoples in harmony. f do Brief-their lzfe ix j S Great-their gy? rf I f Ss Nt f iq Priceless-our heritage x ' iff' If ,, ' f'W X l lf ,- X XX xx fly! HATI I3 EUMMITTEE The statisticians and recorders of that precious commodity, scholarship, comprised john Marshall's rating committee .... At the beginning of the year a representative was chosen from each homeroom to be a member of the rating committee. A general chairman directed the committee, and each grade level had its leader. By a unique system of units and credits each student's rating was found, checked, re-checked and entered in a ledger. This was the basis of our scholarship awards. Every Monday morning, Marshallites practiced the lesson of thrift, by banking money, with the aid of our bank clerks .... Sipecial representatives, elected by each homeroom, were assigned to the task of gathering money to be eposited in the bank. Banking envelopes were distributed and it was the banking clerk's job to count the money and make sure that the figures recorded on the outside of the envelope corresponded with the amount inside. These envelopes were then delivered to the banking office in the main hall .... Arlene Wendt was the chairman of this committee, with Rosemary Schembre and Agnes Van Branteghen as her assistants. Their duties performed under the capable guidance of Mr. DeLong. The sale of bus tokens, another important function of the school, was also conducted by the students. A great deal of work, preparing the tokens and giving the correct change, went into this job. Mr. DeLong acted as the faculty adviser. The student chairman was joanne DeWitt, aided by Christine Patton and Dave Ferner. ' BANK CLEHHS UUETUH I. U. First Row: Agnes Van Branteghem, Rosemary Schembre, Angie Litterio, Mr. C. C. Did you hear the lovely strains of melody echoing through the halls ofj. M. H. S.? The tune was Star dust, the theme of our own radio show- Marshall Unlimited. Each Friday morning the Radio Work- shop presented a new program for the entertainment and enlightenment of our fellow students. They broadcast news of sports, social activities, and bits of gossip, besides campaigning for various charities and presenting many radio plays, both frivolous and serious. At I-Iallowe'en they injected at bit of laughter into the school routine with the farce, The Ghost of Benjamin Sweet, and at Christmas, as a plea for the Save the Children fund, they broadcast the recorded program, The Littlest Angel. Later The Life of Stephen Foster was presented for the School of the Air, in conjunction with a group of senior choir members. In February, a program with the civic orchestra in their annual concert, gave the workshop members the opportunity to be heard outside the walls of john Marshall. All the work was done in Marshall's modern studio with student engineers. This gave the atmosphere of a real radio studio for inspiration, and training .... Working beside the Senior Radio Workshop was the eleventh year Radio English class. - , X fi Q , . XC V . BUCKET STAFF In TERM Anyone chancing to pass near room 153 on certain Monday afternoons during the past year will remember well the sound of many voices and the intermittent clacking of typewriters as the Marshall Docket went to press. Since the number of publications was restricted to less than half the usual number, the staff members had a job on their hands making each edition as fine as possible. Conferences were held among the editors to devise new features for the Docket and give assignments to the eleventh rade 'ournalism class. 8 jim Pifer was elected editor-in-chief for both the first and second terms. The first term staff was elected by the 1947-48 journalism class and the second term staff by the 1948-49 class. JUUHNALISM CLASS This year saw another group of aspiring eleventh year English students introduced to the new experience of newspaper writing under the able leadership of Mr. jenkins. The members of this special journalism class were carefully chosen, for Docket reporters. They were reliable and diligent workers as well as imaginative writers. During the past year this group learned how a newspaper is written, edited, made-up and printed, and with the experience thus gained many will go on to become the new Docket staff members in their senior year. It was the job of the press bureau to publicize Marshall's activities in the community by sub- mitting news to the local papers, including the Tenth Ward Courier, The Greece Press, and the city dailies. The staff was made up of the first and second term editors, who with the help of two journalism class members, gathered information, wrote the stories and released them to the newspapers for publication. A press bureau assistant clipped from the papers all those stories which were printed and arranged them for easy reference. They were accepted and granted a charter on February 28, 1930. The National Honor Society granted through this charter, the privilege and power to estab- lish, and administer the john Marshall Chapter of the National Honor Society. The requirements, considered for membership in the Society this year, were scholarship, char- acter, leadership, and service, characteristics which are worthy of encouragement in all schools. These qualities, in addition to the vote of the Society's members, and the approval of the faculty enabled many Marshall students to become members. Special events, that took place during the past year, were the impressive candle-light admission service held in the auditorium, and the tea given for the new members. The oflice of president was held by james Pifer, and that of secretary-treasurer by joan Riley. Miss Mayo was faculty adviser. John Mayfield also successfully defended his crown by gaining 131.4 points to annex the fancy diving championship.
