BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF STUDIES All youfh should have an undersfanding of our social herifage, should know whaf fhe democrafic way of life in America means, and should acf democrafically. Moreover, all youfh should learn fo live harmoniously wifh ofhers by developing high sfandards of personal and group responsibiIify. These are buf a few of fhe desirable goals which youfh in fhe secondary schools sfrives 'Io reach. Living in a democracy demands a knowledge of our greaf herifage and an appreciafion of fhe dufies, responsibilifies and righfs of each cifizen. To fhis end fhe classes in fhe social sfudies deparf- menf faughl' sfudenfs fhe workings of all fypes of governmenf, from ancienf forms fo fhose of fhe presenf. To aid in fhis research, a mock Republican convenfion was held al' Franklin High School which enabled Marshall sfudenfs who were inferesfed in governmenfal proceedings fo gain pracfical ex- perience by parficipafion in if. Living in a democracy also demands fhe abilifies faughf in fhe English deparfmenf, which are fhe arf of clear logical fhinking: of definife forceful expression and of precise inferprefafion. The mufual undersfanding of peoples depends upon fhese aims, which presenf such greaf responsibilifies fo fhe sfudenfs. In fhe business classes of John Marshall sfudenfs endeavored fo reach fhe ideal goals of beffer cifizenship. They developed knowledge and skills fo enable fhem fo choose and make progress in fheir life work in an indusfrial economy wifh safisfacfion fo fhemselves and wifh benefif fo sociefy. Many sfudenfs parficipafed in a cooperafive course in which fhey worked parf-fime in a iob which was infended fo be fheir fufure vocafion. Because arifhmefic problems have such a greaf effecl' on fhe welfare of fhe individual and on fhe welfare of sociefy, Marshall sfudenfs sfrove fo perform basic mafhemafical operafions and fo undersfand fhe mefhods and confribufions of mafhemafics and science. If is realized fhaf all pupils will nof affain fhese goals fo fhe same degree. Some will reach fhem only moderafelyg ofhers will be able fo go far beyond fhem. The pursuil' of fhese common learnings provided experiences which resulfed in fhe gaining of such knowledge as seemed likely fo bring abouf a socially desirable reacfion. MRS. BARRY MR, FRIEL I4
