L.,-H.-f-7 Presen+ed by du THE CLASS OF FORTY-EIGHT JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL ROCHESTER, New YO RK I nl- Through +he Eyes of MarshalI HO AM I? I am John Marshall High School. To Some I am iusl a building on Ridgeway Avenue, fo olhers a rondezvous of memories, and s+ilI +o olhers a fuiure dream. Yes, I have really advanced since fhe lime I was called fhe Kodak School, in fhal' old faclory building. I am now 'I'he newesl' high school in Rochesler, and have 'facililies unknown fo ofher schools. I guess I am iusi' lucky. Lucky no+ only in having such 'rhings as +he recenfly inslalled memorial radio sfudio, +he Hammond organ, 'rhe elecfric score board and fhe many o+her modern improvemenfs, buf lucky fo have such an able group of feachers and advisers +o acl' as my board of direclors. Each year in ihe spring I begin lo feel gloomy when I fhink of lhe seniors who soon will be eniering my doors for fhe Iasf.+ime. This gloom, however, doesn'+ Iasf very long: for in ihe fall I see fhe numerous eighih graders who are enfer- ing my doors for +he firsl' lime. I enjoy walching lhese sludenfs during +he lime 'I-hey spend wilh me. The firsl year +hey Iind me someihing new and difierenl' and remain on fhe sidelines as IiHIe eighlh graders . The nexf year I find fhese same sfudenfs quife different They are no longer sub-frosh, and spend mosl of 'rheir 'Freshman year ordering fhe new slu- denls around. In The fenfh and elevenfh grades +hey become acfive and really make me proud. Then comes lheir senior year. If is during +he senior year Ihaf fhey become fhe leaders and really have a hand in mak- ing me whai' I am fo be. Affer gradua+ion wha'I' comes? Many of my sfudenfs go lo higher sources of educalion, ofhers io work. My only desire is lhaf fhey miss and remember me as I do fhem. 2 Mr. Leon Friel, Mrs. Jessie Barry. When +he vision became blurred or oul' of focus, Miss Turula and Mr. Goelz gave us exercises +o s'I'reng+hen our menfal or emofional eyes: when we passed from fheir range, our eyes were sfrong and our vision clear. Adiusled now lo high school life, we began lo loolc foward 'rhe fufure, and here Mrs. Barry and Mr. Friel laid capable hands upon fhe binoculars. Wi'I'h 'lhe scale made by our in+eresl's and falenfs, +hey showed us whal' we could make of our lives and helped us choose fhe course necessary for development Through fhe Execulive Council fhey 'I'rained us in governmenf resqgnsibililies, and fhrough par+-'lime jobs, in problems of fhe working wor . Wi+hou+ fhe guidance of fhese four, 'lhe picfure would have indeed been dis+or'I'ed: and we should be graduaiing ignoranl' of all Marshall had +o offer besides being unconscious of fhe necessi+y of confribuling our bil' foward progress. M . ' -11255 wg FOR FINER LIVING FOR CULTURED LIVING BUT THY MEMORY FOR PRACTICAL LIVING 7, If E'RE SHALL DWELL Qfg' FOR BEAUTIFUL LIVING BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF STUDIES All youfh should have an undersfanding of our social herifage, should know whaf fhe democrafic way of life in America means, and should acf democrafically. Moreover, all youfh should learn fo live harmoniously wifh ofhers by developing high sfandards of personal and group responsibiIify. These are buf a few of fhe desirable goals which youfh in fhe secondary schools sfrives 'Io reach. Living in a democracy demands a knowledge of our greaf herifage and an appreciafion of fhe dufies, responsibilifies and righfs of each cifizen. To fhis end fhe classes in fhe social sfudies deparf- menf faughl' sfudenfs fhe workings of all fypes of governmenf, from ancienf forms fo fhose of fhe presenf. To aid in fhis research, a mock Republican convenfion was held al' Franklin High School which enabled Marshall sfudenfs who were inferesfed in governmenfal proceedings fo gain pracfical ex- perience by parficipafion in if. Living in a democracy also demands fhe abilifies faughf in fhe English deparfmenf, which are fhe arf of clear logical fhinking: of definife forceful expression and of precise inferprefafion. The mufual undersfanding of peoples depends upon fhese aims, which presenf such greaf responsibilifies fo fhe sfudenfs. In fhe business classes of John Marshall sfudenfs endeavored fo reach fhe ideal goals of beffer cifizenship. They developed knowledge and skills fo enable fhem fo choose and make progress in fheir life work in an indusfrial economy wifh safisfacfion fo fhemselves and wifh benefif fo sociefy. Many sfudenfs parficipafed in a cooperafive course in which fhey worked parf-fime in a iob which was infended fo be fheir fufure vocafion. Because arifhmefic problems have such a greaf effecl' on fhe welfare of fhe individual and on fhe welfare of sociefy, Marshall sfudenfs sfrove fo perform basic mafhemafical operafions and fo undersfand fhe mefhods and confribufions of mafhemafics and science. If is realized fhaf all pupils will nof affain fhese goals fo fhe same degree. Some will reach fhem only moderafelyg ofhers will be able fo go far beyond fhem. The pursuil' of fhese common learnings provided experiences which resulfed in fhe gaining of such knowledge as seemed likely fo bring abouf a socially desirable reacfion. MRS. BARRY MR, FRIEL I4 MRS. HELEN RAUSCH, Nurse OUR MOTTO: HELP OTHERS The nurse's office conlinued lo give 'fhe appearance of a quiel' haven for ill sfudenfs, buf if was always busy. The nurse was on call af all limes fo adminisfer firsl' aid in case of accidenfs. Visifing sick sfudenfs at home, making doc+or and denfisf appoinfmenfs, and arranging for work permils were only a 'few of 'fhe 'fasks she performed. The office sfaff in John Marshall High School during fhe pas'I year rendered many services which we eifher were +o'I'ally unaware of or which we look for granfed. Their work consisfed of handling financial affairs, sending messages, and helping fhe faculfy in innumerable ways. All of fhese dufies were in addifion 'fo 'Iheir full lime iobs of fyping and sending le'Hers, answering felephone calls, and keeping the school records. They were regarded by Ihe maiorify of fhe sfudenf body as a general informafion bureau, and never failed lo live up 'fo fhe expecfafions.
