Her influence inspired us, and her ability to respond tim he th on stage and off amused our admiraticmi i,ihf M ' J Associate Directors As the curtain went up we found the stage of school life well set hecause of the careful direction of lllrs. Barry. It was her duty to coach tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade girls for their cues in the future. Her ollice was the planning room for dances, banquets, and many other student activities. Un- der her excellent guidance senior girls chose the roles for which they were hest suited. To llliss VanDelValle went the joh of casting. She met each girl entering lllarshall and helped her plan a program to suit the character she wished to portray on life's great stage. Social problems that arose among the cast were met and solved by her. lllr. Friel might well have heen called the make-up man at lllarshall for he added the touch of color to our school life. As master of ceremonies he ranked second to none and was often called on to preside at dinners. Like lllrs. Barry his job was to help seniors plan for their vocations. lt was one of Dr. VVishart's many jobs to see that the cast was ready for rehearsal on time and each morning a line of the tardv culprits might be seen outside his door. He also aided the Hstand-in suh frosh to prepare for their major roles as seniors and later as men and women of the world's theater. The behind-the-scene script writer in our production was our principal on leave, lllr. Snyder, who has been spending the past two years at the Board of Education working on revisions in the script of our school curriculum and methods of teaching. It is expected that he will he back in the director's chair next fall. 5 22 X , .Q 1 1: fi in 2? i is 3s is E E :Q ,Q I H S ii 3 's - E E si vi E 3 55 X if S? 5 5 QS i usadsmwa. omcsns STOCKING MILLAR MAGGW E KLEE Act I Act II Act III Act IV Program Classwork C1'1'r'pi1zg likf' I1 xrzzzil. . .I Seniors Ph:-1'f11g IIIIIII-1' paris. . . Study of history must become a ma- jor instrument on future world-wide planning. just as social studies was important in a peaceful future for our country, so was a study of English essential to complete understanding in a confused world. The English Department continued to delve into the intricacies of studies in written and oral expression while seasoning its courses with related studies in drainatics, journalism, and radio. Wha+ ls'+ Tha+ You Took Up So Gingerlyn Although lllr. Friel left the math department, by some unknown means they still kept alight the flame of knowledge. In true tradition these teachers sought to instill that third r into the minds of their worthy students. Some teachers advocated a syllabus for each math course and tried to have homework and notebooks count part credit for the final grade. The same familiar odors arose on schedule from the classrooms of the southwest wing as the chemistry classes once again learned of the deadly poisons which make up our every day foods. All science classes agreed that it was quite an accomplishment, even with our excellent teachers to master the laws which baffled the alchemist and to track down those evasive electrons! . . 1 ..... n. The Glass Of Fashion And The Mould Of Form Regular routines at :Marshall were spiced by Such fascinating creative courses as the practical artS. shop, and music. Whether it was at stirring candy, singing an anthem, reading a blueprint, or design- ing a poster, some student was enthusiastically adding to his practical knowledge and cultural appre- ciation every hour of the school. The choirs, band, and orchestra were as usual, popular, and populous, and brought many mo- ments of pleasure to the entire school. Commercial art, sewing, and cooking classes continued to ap- peal to many others, and the increased student interest in photography, shop and art craft reflected the world-wide trend to manual sciences. How Use Doth Breed A Habit In A Man The steady clicking of the typevvriters on the third Hoor turned out sheets of exercises, tabulations. and letters, while eighth grade exploratory classes were busy putting x's and o's on their papers to make many clever designs. General business, retail distribution, business law, economic geography, book- keeping, shorthand, and office practice managed to keep the students busy while typewriters, dicta- phones, posting and calculating machines kept rhythm. lllany of the senior girls took part in a cooper- ative course and left school after fifth period to work in oflices as part of their office practice classes. Latin, French, and Spanish composed our languages. German was again left out because there was no available teacher. French classes burst into song while packing food and clothing for France. A Spanish Honor Society was formed of students having a mark of B or above. lkleetings were held in Spanish and a Christmas party was held which emphasized many Spanish customs. Latin trudged along as usual, but with the same helpfulness it has always given to students. The Very Imac As we departed from lNlarshall's hallowed halls, we left behind an unpayahle deht to the nieni hers of the faculty. Their understanding and tolerance have created a feeling of co-operation and of friendly association. The spirit ot consideration and willingness to sacrifice their valuable time has been deeply appreciated. 12 KS. ,ff F x Q. More ls Thy Due Than More Than All Can Pay l,irrpy Louicsu and Uhluscle Hound hlarysl' were certainly plentiful this year as the result of the continuation of the rigorous physical education program initiated during the war. Not even Su- perman could hold up under the apparatus work and navy testg but just in case he survived them he was bound to meet disaster when he hit the commando course. However it really wasn't so tough as that. and hy the time lX'Iay came around Limpy Louie and Hhluscle Bound hlaryl' had changed their names to Lumpy Louie and Hluuscles lwaryn. The maintenance crew under the direction of hir. Larry Tennity and the lunchroom staff under the supervision of llrs. Thompson really had a busy job keeping the school in good condition and feedf ing the famincd lvlarshallites. Unlocking doors for forgetful students, cleaning the lunchroom, and the halls, stoking the hoilers, and performing other routine tasks were only a part of their service. The crew also found time to help the students put up posters and decorations for social events. Pref paring deliciously hot food and desserts, the artists at the gas ranges established for themselves a rc- putation for providing food fit for a king. Our welfare was further looked after by lllrs. Rausch, the school nurse who filled out medical questionnaires for work permits and cared for the many who came to her suffering from a variety of ail- ments. Through her care lllarshall was the healthiest school in the city, and through her sympathetic kindness our nurse has become a friend to all. Once again under the guidance of its president, Phil Elliott, the Executive Council piloted our students through another successful year. The new S. A. Ticket hook and single fall campaign, in- itiated hy the council, was accepted very favorably and arranged the events of an unusually active year in which llIarshall's own Swing Band made its first debut at the after school dances. The homeroom presidents in their Legislature meetings under Vice-President, VVes Becker, sup- plemented the Executive Council. Suggestions fron individual students and problems which concerned the school as a whole, referred from the Executive Council were all taken into consideration. Through action of the Legislature music was piped into the lunchroom in an attempt to better the conditions there. Through the efforts of lNIarshall's Press Bureau, our community was kept informed of our school activities. Every VVednesday the deadline news of the week was prepared for the Democrat and Chronicle and Tenth VVard Courier. ln connection with the press bureau, news was also contributed to a new radio program, lllc- Curdy's Hi-News . The latest fashions, social and sport news, and interesting sidelights on high school life were broadcast by representatives from the twenty-six county high schools. Each month a lllarshall reporter-announcer took over the program which spotlighted lklarshall High. Ad astra per aspera could well be the motto of the junior-journalist. Under the inspiring guid- ance of Mr. Jenkins this class learned from experience the importance of meeting a deadline and ade- quately covering the news. Out of this now not-quite-so-raw material will be chosen the future editors of the Docket, who will strive to meet the standar ls of their predecessors. 53 as Sy ww A N Q R- S was W ,NK K W .N ' wa fx Q A E X 5 Q Yf we S. Mr. Bushnell, with the capable assistance of Mr. Eike, turned out one of the heaviest lines in the history of the school. After taking a close one from Franklin by a 2-0 score, the Marshall men succumbed to Edison Jefferson, East, and West. In the only other encounter of the season, the team battled our arch-rival Charlotte to a 0-0 deadlock. Dick Lucitte, easily the outstanding player on the team, was honored with a second team berth on the Democrat and Chronicle all-scholastic eleven. The only other player to gain an all-scholastic position was Gene Weiss, veteran left end, who was chosen on the Democrat and Chronicle third team. Walt Young, Jim Condon, Don Stocking, and Les Stallman received honorable mention. Another honor came to the team as it had the distinction of being one of the two city teams to score upon the city champion Jefferson squad. Play Out The Play Showing marked improvement over last year's squad, Coach Bushnell's 19-I-5 baseball nine finished the regular season with a record of six wins, two losses and a tie for first place with VVest High, which necessitatd a post- season playoff game at Red Wing Stadium. After dropping the season's opener to Charlotte, it looked as though the team was out to extend its two year losing streak, but the boys came back fighting and trounced a determined Madison outfit, 13-5. Continuing in the winning column, the Marshall fly-chasers upset a highly rated Jefferson aggregation and emerged victorious in engagements with Monroe, Franklin, and East. Their winning skein was spoiled, however, in their encounter with Edison, as the Marshall men succumbed to the speedball pitching of Stretch Stevenson. They finished the regular season with their hard-fought 2-1 victory over VVest, tying the league lead.
