N NEW BUILDING OF THE EASTSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST COMPLETED IN THE FALL OF 1958 HOW SHALL THE YOUNG SECURE THEIR HEARTS? How shall the young secure their hearts And guard their lives from sin? Thy Word the choicest rules imparts To keep the conscience clean. The words of this familiar hymn present a challenging question: What can young people do to secure their hearts for happiness here and hereafter? This article, presented by your friends of the EASTSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST in Sheffield, is designed to make some suggestions to all young people that will insure greater happiness for you. 1. DEVELOP A HEALTHY RESPECT FOR THE BIBLE. - The Bible is declared to be the word of God. It has had an elevation influence on the lives of people everywhere it has been permitte to go. As a young person who is charting a life, you will do well to secure a good Bible, read it carefully, and plan your life in accordance with the principles it teaches. Ulead 1 Pet. 4g11: Heb. 4:12, Gal. 1:83 2 Tim. 4g16.j 2. DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO BE A CHRISTIAN. - Jesus has said, Without me, you can do nothing. Uohn 15:33 -The greatest men of all ages have been those who followed Christ. There are people who ridicule Christianity, but they would not dare live in a place where Christianity did not exist. CHOOSE COMPANIONS WHO RESPECT CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES. - Many scriptures show the power of friends to influence those who associate with them. Don't let surface pleasures lead you into running with a crowd who will discourage your spiritual growth. You are taught to influence others for good, not to be influenced by them for evil. Your companion for life should be a Christian so that you may have the highest degree of happiness. Ulead 1 Cor. 15:33y 4. LEARN TO APPRECIATE BETTER THINGS. - Paul prayed that Christians might approve things that are excellent. - Phil. 1:10. We are taught to think on things which are just, pure, holy, and of good report. As a young person, try to elevate your sense of values to look for the best things in life. Do not be content with crude, vulgar delightsg develop a desire for that which is cultured and elevating. QRead Phil. 4:8 and Matthew 7:61 Many other principles of happy living could be cited.
