His latest hit being, 'I Found My Thrill on Mars Hill, 'MARY De VORE, now a famous actress, made her biggest hit on Broadway when she fell off the stage. 'DICK HARRISON, is now a popular movie actor. He was recently interviewed by gossip columnist BETTY JONES concer- ning the girls in his life. His only request was, 'Just give me one Moore. Several have gained fame in other fields, such as BARBARA HALL who is U. S. Ambassador to Outer Mongolia. The Indianapolis Drag Trophy was won by CLAUDE O'KELLY in his '69 Nash Rambler. His only comment was, 'I just couldn't get it out of second gear. 'An important lady around the White House in Washington is EMILEE KENNEDY, She has been appointed golf caddy for the President. 'The Nationwide Giggling Contest was won by NANCY HESTER, She commented, 'I thought I'd die laughing. 'Gaining recognition in the field of sports is GERALD CLARK, who plays center for the Dixie Glob Trompers. This team was recently intergrated. 'NANCY MCCLURE has reached the top in the fashion world. She ls modeling at the present in New York City. 'BONNIE MYHAN left this morning on a flight that will make her the first lady jet pilot to fly the Atlantic. Now 'our Bonnie flies over the ocean. 'Many of your old chums have reached heights in business world, the ghost rider went on to say. 'RAY MCGEE has made a success in his bakery business. His speciality is 'Patty-cakes. ' His secret ingredient is Kelly Jelly, manufactured by Miss PAT KELLY, 'After fifteen years of sacking groceries at Wilson's Super Market, VAN HESTER has been promoted to head-sacker, 'SUSAN POSEY is running a thriving flower shop in the Tri-Cities called Posey's Posies. 'RICHARD I-IUNNICUTT owns a barber shop in Killen. On the window is a sign which reads, 'Let Hunni Cutt your hair. ' 'Some of the '59 graduates have settled down to a quiet and happy married Life. CHARLOTTE MCMURTREY is a 'happy- go-Lucky' housewife, while PEGGY FRANKLIN spends her day chasing little 'moving-Vans. ' 'After ten years of married life, DERREL DAVIS has discovered that children are not 'cheaper by the dozen. ' 'The Henry Twins, JOICELYN and JANICE, have married twins and have twins, 'LINDA BEVIS, after fourteen years of trying desperately to get her drivers license, finally hooked her license and the instructor too. V 'Although he hasn't settled down yet, BILL COX, after twelve years of going steady with Brenda, has finally decided to tie the knot. 'Many of the former Mars Hill students have returned to their old Alma Mater to work. BILLY WEA VER is coaching the Mars Hill Panthers, who haven't lost a game in six years, while JAN SNELL has taken over her father's job as presi- dent. MARY ALLEN is also back at old M. H. working as dietitian in the cafeteria, 'Various other occupations are held by the old '59 seniors. Working for WXYZ Radio is Weatherman JIMMY RAINEY, It seems his theme song goes something like this, 'May all your dry days be Rainey ones. ' 'PAUL CARROLL, a devoted fan of General Elvis Burns, recently joined the army to be with his idol. 'WINSTON BIGGS is now a missionary. At the present he is in the Wilds of Africa. 'ELAINE GARRETT and MARIFRED HAMM are acting as stewardess on a space ship. They think their job is 'just out of this world. ' Vith this last word he turned, and to his steed gave a whistle, And away he flew like the down of a thistleg But I heard 0 him exclaim, ere he rode out of sight. Members of that first class through a desire for a Christian education broke the close ties of former schools and classmates and cast their lot in an untried school where they could not have been sure that their work would be accredited. The thirteen members of that class are now demonstrating the wisdom of their de- cision as they live lives of service to God and neighbor in their various spheres of in- fluence, The twelfth senior class takes the spotlight. Eight of your number were registered in the first grade at the schools first session in September 1947. They are Derrel Davis, Elaine Garrett, Nancy McClure, Mary DeVore, Jan Snell, Billy Weaver, Linda Bevis, and Gerald Clark. The latter two of these have each missed one year of the twelve at Mars Hill. It now remains to be observed how well the members of this class perform their role on the stage of life, Will you justify the high hopes and dreams of your parents? Will you demonstrate the true worth of daily Bible classes and a Christian environment? It is my conviction that the answer is yes. If this be true then all the hardships and sacrifices of parents and teachers are a thousand fold repaid, We are looking for a grand performance from this class on life 's stage of action. In Christian love, Raiph Shell IT MATTERS NOT HOW LONG WE LIVE, BUT HOW. -as 1: -Q fa, .x-l- , ..... N, iiznx I A RY l 4 v:.,, v up A 5. ' 3 ,Huw mi, X eww ,, . . , , as ii lk Xb, gs of ' ' . 6 .. How shall the young secure their hearts And guard their lives from sin? Thy Word the choicest rules imparts To keep the conscience clean. The words of this familiar hymn present a challenging question: What can young people do to secure their hearts for happiness here and hereafter? This article, presented by your friends of the EASTSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST in Sheffield, is designed to make some suggestions to all young people that will insure greater happiness for you. 1. DEVELOP A HEALTHY RESPECT FOR THE BIBLE. - The Bible is declared to be the word of God. It has had an elevation influence on the lives of people everywhere it has been permitte to go. As a young person who is charting a life, you will do well to secure a good Bible, read it carefully, and plan your life in accordance with the principles it teaches. Ulead 1 Pet. 4g11: Heb. 4:12, Gal. 1:83 2 Tim. 4g16.j 2. DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO BE A CHRISTIAN. - Jesus has said, Without me, you can do nothing. Uohn 15:33 -The greatest men of all ages have been those who followed Christ. There are people who ridicule Christianity, but they would not dare live in a place where Christianity did not exist. Do not be ashamed of the gospel and ot your obedience to it. fRom. 1:16y QContinued on the Next Pagej I ELDERS JAMES BLANKINSHP, WALTER KELLY, AND HAROLD DARNELL They Oversee the Spiritual Work at Eastside THE INSIDE AUDITORIUM OF THE EASTSIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST WITH A SEATING CAPACITY OF OVER 500 OPERA-TYPE SEATS Q HOW SHALL THE YOUNG SECURE THEIR HEARTS? , Continuedj 3. CHOOSE COMPANIONS WHO RESPECT CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES. - Many scriptures show the power of friends to influence those who associate with them. Don't let surface pleasures lead you into running with a crowd who will discourage your spiritual growth. You are taught to influence others for good, not to be influenced by them for evil. Your companion for life should be a Christian so that you may have the highest degree of happiness. Ulead 1 Cor. 15:33y 4. LEARN TO APPRECIATE BETTER THINGS. - Paul prayed that Christians might approve things that are excellent. - Phil. 1:10. We are taught to think on things which are just, pure, holy, and of good report. As a young person, try to elevate your sense of values to look for the best things in life. Do not be content with crude, vulgar delightsg develop a desire for that which is cultured and elevating. QRead Phil. 4:8 and Matthew 7:61 Many other principles of happy living could be cited. We hope these will be valuable to youp and that, through the years, as you treasure this year book and re-live the memories, that you will read this message often. The greatest compliment you can pay your teachers is to live a fruitful Christian life. May God be with you. I am happy I have successfu lly completed twelve years of study and am entitled to a diploma, but it is with sadness I leave Mars Hill. Mars Hill means so much to me because I've spent twelve years here. Along with five others of our class, Jan Snell, , y eVore, Elain Garrett, and N ancy McClure I began in the first grade. I know it must mean more to us than to others for we've n Billy Weaver Mar D ever known anything else. As far as I know I was the first to enroll at Mars Hill. Brother Lee, our first president, came to Florence months before its opening to talk to mother, a widow, about work to enable my sister and me to o g to school and he enrolled me at that time. I hope you like our 1958-'59 yearbook. I've devoted many, many hours of hard work to it, but enjoyed it tremendously. I've tried to arrange it to please lovers of Mars Hill Bible School, 1 want to thank all who have helped me try to give you an outstanding, book - co-workers, printers, and photographer, To all of you students, teachers, and staff, I wish the very best of every- thing and thanks for making these past twelve years so enjoyable. My heart will always be at Mars Hill and if I ca n ever be of any servi ce feel free to call on me, In Christian love, Your editor I7I w QV M ,W M QI QU xy' Us f TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The WorId's Best Yearbooks Are Taylorfmadeu . - --rw ir' ,v 1 QA, Af' .,-f l ,F :ef v W ' f:. wSi,,m ' f Q, Q23 f f , -Q ' . , , M, , - .f W, A ww' ,., 1 Q .
