Depart ure July 24, 1985 On a bright summer morning the na- val vessel Mars bid farewell to its ho- meport of Oakland, California. The sunny weather provided a small lift to the otherwise dampened mood of the crew. I t's never easy saying good- bye to family or home but knowing that a man has a job to do gives pur- pose to tearful farewells. With a new Skipper and an air of Can-do Spir- it, the slil AFS steamed proudly out of the San Francisco Bay bound for the lair of the Golden Dragon. Many long hours, longer miles and even longer days still awaited the men of Mars, but there was none aboard who felt he couldn't match the challenge of WESTPAC 85. x rx ilu its '2i'1lNiS J 1 gl Y- Ui 3 .
