To a landsman this is not under- standable and sometimes it is even difHcult for us to un- derstand. But it is so! A ship at sea is a distinct world in herself and in consider- ation ofthe protracted and distant operations of the fleet units, the Navy must place great power, responsibility and trust in the hands of those leaders chosen for command. In each ship there is one man Who, in the hour of emergen- cy or peril at sea, can turn to no other man. There is one alone who is ultimately responsible for safe navigation, engineering performance, accurate gunHre, and morale of his ship. He is the Commanding Officer. He is the ship. His is the most difficult and demanding assignment in the Na vy. There is not an instant in his tour as the Command- ing Officer that he can escape the grasp of command re- sponsibility. His privileges in View of' his obligations are almost ludicrously small, nevertheless, command is the spur which has given the Navy its ji great leaders. Ac - ak It is a duty which richly deserves B. , ,P the highest, time-honored title of the seafaring World. . .CAPTAIN '. ' ,V ik I' L-Wd? ' X Division Executive OfHcer 3-M Co-Ordina tor Command Career Counselor tive Comprised of yeoman, personnelman, postal clerksrcommand career coun- selor and a religious program specialist, X Division strives to epitomize that WI spirit on board MARS by providing prompt, courteous personnel and administrative support for the en tire Martian crew. Being one of the smaller di visions on board the 4991 Attack Food Ship, our job functions contribute to the overall team effort to get the job done. The YNs lequipped with two Xerox 860 Word Processing Systems! main tain officer service records, com- mand files, type ofHcial correspondence for signature, type and distribute ships directives as well as reports monitoring. On the personnel side of the house, the PNs provide services ranging from transfer and receipt of person- nel, service record en tries, typing and submission of documentsaffecting pay and allowances and a myriad of other paperwork associated with personnel support. Our command career counselor, NC1 Les Fowler, has the important task of ensuring that all the Martian crewmembers career development needs are being met. Having to constantly keep abreast of all the changing programs available to the Martian crew from Guard III assignments to LDO! W0 Program applications, is a fulltime job in itself and NC1 Fowler is one of the best. In the religious vein, RP2 Keith Lowery works directly with the ships Chaplain to provide spiritual guidance for the Martian crew in addi- tion to the collateral duty of ships librarian. Last but surely not least are those fun -loving guys down in the mailroom, the PCs, without whose tireless efforts when mail is aboard, would adversely affect the high morale on board MARS. In addition to providing money order service, stamp sales and most of the other services provided by a civilian post office, the expeditious manner in which they receive, sort and distribute mail constantly ensures the Martians prompt delivery of that long awaited letter or package from home. Then theres Deck. The work of the Deck Department may seem to lack glamour and romance. It is hard to Hnd anything romantic in pulling UNREP signalman duty while unrepping in a monsoon off the coast of the Philippinesg pulling lookout on a Midwatch with nothing around you but the occasionally oppressive dark of an Indian Ocean night may not be the utmost in glamour. And maintaining the appearance of the Mars' interior and exterior spaces prob- ably isn't everyones idea of the best way to spend a five-month cruise. But Deck does an honest dayis work land very often morej. They earn their pay and their liberty. And along the way, they earn the respect of their shipmates, who recognize that they do dirty, difficult, often dreary work. And they do it with dedication and pride and with a stubborn commitment to excellence. I 319 NNN If 2 1 ' 2-an . . and I won't forget the men who died . . . We did a daily newspaper, newscast and printed more liberty guides than some of us care to recall. We brought you Bingo Night, Captains Ca1l,and Medical Lectures. In short, our work kept us conspicuously busy, but il' through our efforts you were able to forget Westpac for a few precious moments, or got a slightly better grasp on what was hap- pening in the world, we consider it all worth it. Tiger Cruise '85 offered male family members and friends of the Mars' crew a chance to enjoy the week-long transit home from Pearl Harbor to Oakland as shipmates. Whether it was a quiet talk on the starlit main deck, an evening meal shared on the mess decks, or a few hours spent to- gether in the work space, the Tiger Cruise stressed closeness and camara- derie. It was also hoped to be a learn- ing experience - the intent to illus- trate to our guests just what life and work underwa y is like on the Number One AFS. Sea and Anchor Detail went down at 0715 and the crew went to their sta tions with an eagerness and enthusiasm that belied the frigid light of the morning. We were pulling in. Home! We passed under the Golden Gate Bridge and a spirited roar that was as beautiful as it was bois- terous rose up from the decks. It was echoed a short time later by the crowd gathered at Berth India, Naval Supply Center Uakland when the tugs nosed the Mars against the pier, the Line Handling Party secured the mooring lines and the Boatswainis Mate of the Watch passed those three magical words: Moored - shift colors! You learn a lot on a WESTPAC. About yourself, about the world, about the Navy, its ships, the people who work and live on them. You learn responsibility, grow a lot, laugh a lot, cry some- times. You work and you play and you mature, and you learn about pride - national and person- al pride. And when it's over, you learn something else. You learn that of all the places you've seen, there is none more beautiful, none more precious, than your homeport. And of all the words you've heard, none mean more, carry more worth than: Welcome Home. 3 , . . where at least I know l'm free . . . ff, . 1 stays.
